So I’m taking an English 1 course this semester, and the professor decided to switch the homework assignments making next weeks homework due today and today’s homework due next week. He specifically stated in class, twice, that if you turned in the wrong assignment you would get zeros on both.
So today, one classmate of mine walked into class. Stayed for maybe 15 minutes until he realized he had done the wrong homework, said “Fuck this I’m going surfing,” and walked out of class.
The 90s anime pretended it didn’t happen. Naysayers have been insisting it was a mistranslation since the manga translations first came out.
“Uranus wa otoko demoari onna demoaru”
Now - I am only at the very most basic level but I know this: otoko = man, onna = woman, demoaru = formal, ‘to also be’. I couldn’t quite catch Michiru’s next lines but she says ‘dochiramo’, ‘both’, twice while the subtitles translate it as Haruka having the traits and strengths of both.
HARUKA TENOU IS BIGENDER AND I’M GONNA GO AHEAD AND SAY INTERSEX TOO. THIS IS CANON STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE.
(”but,” I can hear the transphobes whine, “Michiru was probably speaking metaphorically and it’s canon that only women can be Sailor Senshi!” well 1. shut up and 2. being bigender doesn’t make Haruka less of a woman (OR less of a man) and I’m sure the Uranus Sailor Crystal knows better than you. c:)
There was a special private screening for the first episode of the third season and fans have confirmed the following:
NO MORE CGI TRANSFORMATIONS! They’re 2D now!
The first episode only contained half of act 24 SO NO MORE FUCKING 1:1 ADAPTION!111!11!1!
New opening and ending*
The animation is overall better but different.
Will be aired weekly on TV
*Opening Song:In Love with the New Moon performed by Etsuko Yakushimaru (the good sis who also performed Otome No Policy for the 20th Anniversary Album) *Ending Song:Eternal Eternity performed by Sailor Uranus’ and Sailor Neptune’s voice actresses.
This new season hasn’t started yet and it’s already slaying
I just can’t express how important it is to me that Haruka’s gender presentation was handled so well by Crystal.
Whether you consider Haruka to be nonbinary or a butch woman, her masculine presentation is an undeniable part of who she is. She wears a boy’s uniform. She uses masculine pronouns. She speaks in a decidedly masculine way.
This is not unheard-of in anime. Takarazuka, after all, has an intense following.
What I find refreshing, though, is that Haruka is never, not once, played for laughs. Her gender is never used for shock value. There is no hilarious, zany reveal. Usagi’s attraction is never treated as a joke or the product of deception on Haruka’s part.
Her gender identity is treated with the same gravity as her identity as a sailor guardian. Her male school uniform is never portrayed as invalidated by her wearing of her sailor uniform. They are two sides of the same person, both inherent to who she is.
Compare to the unfortunate episode in the 90s anime, when the girls spend an entire episode frantically chasing Haruka around, only to be shocked and horrified to learn that all along she was hiding breasts under that male school uniform. Surprise! It was a trap.
Look at the… almost disgust on their faces. Crystal could have easily brushed over Haruka’s gender and “settled” the matter with a scene like this. But they didn’t. They never reduced it to this. And I’m so grateful for that.
