I've been seeing an increase of Bendydick Cumbucket on my dash and it makes me want to cry

this ask is from 2012. sherlock series two has just aired. star trek into darkness promo pics and trailers have started. 12 years a slave and the fifth estate are also doing promo. he is everywhere. he looks even worse with white hair. you go to see the hobbit only to realize that he’s also the fucking dragon. your dash is filled with him. you don’t even follow sherlock blogs. you’re starting to think tumblr just forces reblogs of things pertaining to him. all anyone talks about is tom hiddleston getting a role on sherlock and doing a cross over with doctor who with the giraffe looking doctor. you don’t even know what bbc is. the killbenedictcumberbatch url makes the iconic™ post of a kid running from someone in an alien costume and titles it “benedict chamberbatch scaring a youth”, the post is performance art. icons are turning into pics of him. you can’t escape. the lizard king has risen.

Pondering about the fact that TGG consists of five cases and there are also five tasks for Sherlock to solve at Sherrinford in TFP …  I suddenly remembered that the number five … connected to cases … actually comes up a third time in Sherlock BBC. After taking a closer look at the scipts (thanks @callie-ariane ) I think I’ve probably spotted another rather intriguing and joyful pattern.

The five CASES of The Great Game

Sherlock receives four pips but there are five cases … the fifth and last case brings the story full circle to the beginning.

The five TASKS of The Final Problem

Sherlock is given four tasks … the fifth task can only be solved through the collected conclusions of the previous four.

The five  FUNNY STORIES  of The Sign Of Three

Sherlock mentions five ‘funny stories’ before he decides to tell the wedding guests about the case of the  'Bloody Guardsman’ and the one of the 'Mayfly Man’. Turns out that both cases are actually just one. But that’s not the point.

My focus lies on the five 'funny stories’ Sherlock just mentions randomly.

Under the cut for anyone who is interested.

SHERLOCK: (Looking to the phone) Did somebody make you a better offer?

JIM: Oh, don’t you worry, we’ll find the right moment. Because we’ve got a problem to solve together, you and I. Do you know what it is?

SHERLOCK: I’m fascinated.

JIM: The big one. The best one. The final problem. And the funny thing is, I’ve already told you all about it. You’ll be hearing from me, Sherlock – but not for a while.

And he turns on his heel and just walks away. Talking on his phone.

JIM: If you have what you say you have, I will make you rich. If you don’t, I will make you into shoes…

So, uh… has anyone else noticed this is kind of a big deal?

No but seriously the representation of Aspergers/ASD in the media is ridiculous.

We’ve got one book, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, which is a pretty generalised and vague description of ASD really— it applies to a lot of people, but not all, not even cLOSE to all.

Then there’s one kid in Tracy Beaker Returns who’s basically exactly the same as the kid from The Curious Incident. Literally, they’re the same character. If you read TCI and then watch TBR you’ll see. They’re exactly the same in terms of personality and habits.

THEN there’s Sherlock. Series two, episode two, they’re out in the countryside looking for a big dog or whatever, doesn’t matter. Aspergers is mentioned at one point- as a joke. A throwaway line met with a laugh, hahahaha how funny, the implication of Sherlock having aspergers, what a hoot. For a second when that was said I’m sure a lot of people thought “hEY COOL LOOK WE CAN HAVE SOME REPRESENTATION AND IT’S A REALLY POPULAR CHARACTER” but no. Never mentioned again.

Then there’s Community. Same thing. Abed. Season one. Somebody mentions aspergers in relation to him. It’s a joke. It just means nothing. Nobody ever mentions the concept again.

And the thing is, these characters who are joked about in relation to ASD/Aspergers are all “emotionless”. Abed literally describes himself as being unable to feel emotion at one point, Sherlock avoids emotion and calls sentiment a chemical defect in the losing side. That’s fine. I’m not going to question the characters themselves. I’m questioning the writers who wrote those words. I’m sick of the stigma that people with aspergers don’t feel anything, that we’re just robots, that we’re just computers without any emotion at all. Just because this thing we’ve got in our heads makes it harder to express a lot of things and deal with a lot of things doesn’t mean we’re incapable.

I just want some actual representation. No jokes, no throwaway lines. A realistic character dealing with ASD realistically, and for that character to not be reduced to being nothing but tropes of their disability.

People with aspergers are not just a disability in a meat suit. We’re people, real people, with a real condition that makes some stuff harder for us and some stuff easier, and it isn’t very nice to be degraded to stereotypes and treated like a joke. We’ve got to deal with this every day, and it’d be really nice to see some of that in the media. Maybe shake some of the ridiculous stereotypes.

“She is … infatuated with the mind of Sherlock Holmes” - Lara

“During series two, things get a little bit flirty between the pair.” - the narrator of Sherlock Uncovered: The Women.

“To Irene, Sherlock is just someone that’s she’s totally intrigued by.” - Lara

“Oh, he has. He shagged Irene Adler, that night they had together when he rescued her from a beheading.” - Ben

“I think what’s so wonderful about these two characters is that they have such a huge mutual admiration for each other” - Lara

“These two are made for each other,” - Mark

“He does fall for her, to a degree, in the game of love that they play,” - Ben

“He can’t decipher anything about this woman, which then causes intrigue, attraction, who knows what’s going on between these two people?” - Lara

this has been a PSA.

John Watson. My friend, John Watson. John.

When John first broached the subject of being best man, I was confused. I confess at first I didn’t realise he was asking me. When finally I understood, I expressed to him that I was both flattered and surprised. I explained to him that I had never expected this request and I was a little daunted in the face of it. I nonetheless promised that I would do my very best to accomplish a task which was, for me, as demanding and difficult as any I had ever contemplated. Additionally, I thanked him for the trust he had placed in me and indicated that I was, in some ways, very close to being moved by it. It later transpired that I’d said none of this out aloud.

I’m afraid John, I can’t congratulate you. All emotions, and in particular love, stand opposed to the pure, cold reason I hold above all things. A wedding is, in my considered opinion, nothing short of a celebration of all that is false and specious and irrational and sentimental in this ailing and morally comprimised world. Today we honoour the death-watch beetle that is the doom of our society and, in time- one feels certain- our entire species.

But anyway, let’s talk about John.

If I burden myself with a little help-mate during my adventures, it is not out of sentiment or caprice- it is that he has many fine qualities of his own that he has overlooked in his obsession with me. Indeed, any reputation I have for mental acuity and sharpness comes, in truth, from the extraordinary contrast John so selflessly provides. It is a fact, I believe, that brides tend to favour exceptionally plain bridesmaids for their big day. There is a certain analogy there, I feel. And contrast is, after all, God’s own plan to enhance the beauty of his creation, or it would be if God were not a ludicrous fantasy designed to provide a career opportunity for the family idiot.

The point I’m trying to make is that I am the most unpleasant, rude, ignorant and all-round obnoxious arsehole that anyone could possibly have the misfortune to meet.

I am dismissive of the virtuous, unaware of the beautiful, and uncomprehending in the face of the happy. So if I didn’t understand I was being asked to be best man, it is because I never expected to be anybody’s best friend. Certainly not the best friend of the bravest and kindest and wisest human being I have ever had the good fortune of knowing.

John, I am a ridiculous man. redeemed only by the warmth and constancy of your friendship. But, as I’m apparently your best friend, I cannot congratulate you on your choice of companion.

Actually, now I can.

Mary, when I say you deserve this man, it is the highest compliment of which I am capable. John, you have endured war, and injury, and tragic loss (so sorry again about that last one)

So know this: today you sit between the woman you have made your wife and the man you have saved – in short, the two people who love you most in all this world. And I know I speak for Mary as well when I say we will never let you down, and we have a lifetime ahead to prove that.

Sherlock series two “without people”

This is interesting.

The middle part - the one at Baskerville - really looks like some post-apocalyptic movie. The middle part really gave me chills. It would be even better when there wouldn’t be so many shots with cars moving because it’s clear that someone must be driving those cars but otherwise…

And yes, the music used: perfectly fits the mood.
