Curandera Special Feature #2: Loba from La Loba Loca

What is La Loba Loca?
Loba: La Loba Loca is a project that started over 3.5 years ago, it started with a La Loba Loca fb page. It happen during the last months of undergraduate when I was just completely fed up with academia and trying to figure out my next life step. I had been photographing, doing bike up-cycled jewelry, doing body powered tattooing/stick and poke and ranting about whitesupremacyheteropatriarchy and other ism in my personal fb page. My friend, La Bere from Cantos de La Tierra, told me one day ‘start an FB page’ and I made it that same day.I was not sure what to name it at first but then it hit me La Loba Loca. My homie Lea De Las Lobas asked me once 'how do you say crazy she-wolf in spanish?’- she was coming up for a name for her college radio show. The name stuck with me and I decided it to go with it. I am not sure what the original goal of La Loba Loca was, I was not expecting folx to actually read, look at my stuff or feel connected to it but it happened. Some folx got to my social media after reading some articles that got around and others just through word of mouth. From then on La Loba Loca has become this entity and identity that is not necessarily me but a Loba going around documenting, ranting and creating.

So what inspired you to do the amazing Loba Loca project?
Loba: I think that La Loba Loca was inspired by urgency I felt as I was finishing up undergrad. I realized that the only thing I learn in college is that all the professors had no fucking idea about life and the reality outside of a rich academic institution, I realized that my family, my grandmas, parents, aunts knew had way more knowledge that this renowned academic institution. I wanted to figure out other ways of learning and sharing. I had graduated with an interdisciplinary degree and a thesis on forced sterilization of Quechua people during Fujimori’s dictatorship and I also wanted to figure out how to start practicing and gaining medicine and decolonial health to take writing into praxis. At the beginning I was making healthy and plant based cooking shows through La Loba Loca, the idea with this videos was to mix story telling, food making and culture. Health started to become an important aspect for La Loba Loca. I think about health as encompassing, something that we actively through cultural preservation, (re)claiming and (re)inventing outside this rigid system that wants us unhealthy. Under La Loba Loca I started several projects around reproductive justice, full spectrum companionship, and health some of the are  Serpiente Birth & Spectrum Service (Birth, Post-Partum, Menstruation, Placenta medicine, Abortion, Loss and Post-abortion care ), an online knowledge share on radical and conscious menstruation, moonpads production hustle, several workshops/knowledge shares on health related topics beside other side projects.

Can you tell us more about the online knowledge share you are doing?
Loba: Yes! So it is a project that started a year ago and it was finally birthed this month, the first cycle started 10/05/15. The knowledge share is called RADICALLY AND CONSCIOUSLY MOONING: ONLINE KNOWLEDGE SHARE and it is a 4-week long knowledge share on menstruation and other brujerias. The project combines writing, videos and illustrations by me and also compilation of other work out there. I facilitate talleres live, in real life, but I was getting emails from people all over the world around about moon pads, herbalism and menstruation that I decided I had to do a taller that could reach all of them! I was also interested on doing a knowledge share online to make it more accessible to people that cannot often leave their home due to chemical sensitivities, anxiety, mobility between other factors. In the future, I would like to caption the videos in the knowledge share in English and translate all the material to Spanish (I do need funding for this, so if you are interested you can donate funds towards this here. The grounding theme of this project is (re)learning the power of cycles and mxnstruation. The main driving force behind this project is the fact that mxnstrual education is an important part of sexual health that everybody should know about it! This knowledge share is geared towards people that directly experience menstruation and also for those that are friends, family and parents to people that mxnstruate.

There is an application process for the knowledge share since I want to know who is accessing the information and want to make sure that people that I work with are aligned with my political and cultural views. If you are interested on participating in cycle 2 starting February, 2016, you can apply here.

A driving force behind the project is cultural preservation, every week there are assignments people must turn in and people are pushed to do their own research in their lives, bodies, families and place(s) of origin. I think that menstruation has the power to take us to the roots, the origin, and I think the work to preserve and document knowledge and medicine that is often not respected by the medical industrial complex is NECESSARY. At the end of each cycle a compilation zine will be made and available to the public. I also wanted to make sure that Youth of Color (YOC) were able to access this knowledge share so people are encouraged to donate some money for the YOC fund, you can check out the recipients for cycle 1 here.

If you want to be up-to-date- about future cycles sign up for the knowledge share mailing list here.

One of the main things I admire about you is your hustle art and your ability to stay self-employed. What would you advice another person trying to get out of the 9-5 schedule and pursuing their life purpose?
Loba: I started my hustle almost 3 years ago, I was self-employed because I could not get documented/'legal’ work. Once I got my work visa, a year ago, I was so happy and ready to get myself out in the 'work field’. Reality: After half time working in a non-profit for 2 weeks my back collapsed and I was so tired when I got back home that I could not continue doing all my 'real’ work or study for midwifery. Since then I have been doing odd jobs, doing knowledge shares, being a bike safety instructor, taking surveys for pay, doing online mentoring to travel abroad students and a bunch of other random stuff to pay my bills.

My main advice for people trying to stop working 9-5 jobs is: make sure you are a great money saver and only use money for necessities, if you are invested on providing services or goodies to non-wealthy communities you are probably not going to make enough to sustain yourself, you might have to get a bunch of other gigs/hustles. You will not be working 9-7 because you will be working 24-24. Anxiety and stress are hard to deal with when you live gig to gig, since there is no set source of money you must always be in the look out and create new projects and goodies that can get some funds your way. You will think about projects in your dreams, even exercising will become a place to get new ideas. You might no longer be responding to a 'boss’ but you will respond to your own work standars which can be even more labor & time consuming if you are a detail oriented person. Sometimes hustles will take a lot of energy, work and time; the funds that you get might no be close to what you would be getting if you quantified your work under a hourly-minimum wage. If you manage to get a 'vacations’, it will me probably be mixed with work and if you LOVE what you do even leisure time will become work. For instance, I love menstruation and anything related to menstruation whenever I tell myself 'stop working you are gonna get sick, do something fun’ I often think about creating illustrations around menstruation or picking up a book about abortion. When your work is what you love, lines can get very thin and burn out is a reality. Most of the time the work that we do, people that are self-employed or multi-gig-employed, is perceived as 'easy’, 'not real’ or not worthy of supporting. Example, some people would spend $20 bucks on a shitty movie theater or spend $20 bucks on gas to go to the over side of town but not be down to spend $20 on two reusable menstrual pads that will last for years and that took 1:30-2 hours to make. I am not sure how long I can do this work for, since it requires tons of energy and dedication, but I am trying to figure out ways to keep it sustainable and also healthy for my mental and physical health- I am considering becoming a sub-teacher to help with money.

Ultimately I want people that want to start hustles to go ahead and do them! Create cool projects and products that we can all support but also make sure you have a clear idea of what you want to make sure you have your basic needs met and can do so keeping yourself healthy. Self-employment can be a lot of work since there is no start or end time but if you love what you do you can find happiness in what you do.

What else do you have going on soon and where can we find you in the internet?
Loba: I have tons of cool stuff planned. In November I will be doing a bi-coastal tour and will be facilitating several workshops on health, yerbeteria, mxsntruation and more in San Diego, CA, Bay Area, Humboldt, CA and thee liberal art schools in MA. I will also be doing a seeds, plant and medicine gathering in LA October 18th as well as knowledge share in my garden and home on yerberia, gardens, seeds and down-there-baths on December. Either December or January I am planning to publish a moon calendar booklet for people that want to track their cycles this coming year and get a couple of tips on radical moonstration. If you want to learn more about it email me to contact@lalobaloca.com or  add yourself to my mailing list here.

I am all over the internet and social media, I even have an online store where I carry reusable and earth-friendly mxnstrual products, repurposed bike jewelry, (sometimes) zines and herbal medicine:

DINNER FOR LAZY PEOPLE: I can have as many veggies I want and ¼ cup of pasta so instead of prepping 3 pots with veggies, pasta and sauce I make all in one pot pasta, just throw into the pot your favourite veggies (in my case are mushrooms and spinach) a small portion of uncooked whole wheat pasta, and a splash of white whine, season as you want (I use garlic powder, black pepper, salt, dry basil, and chilli flakes) cook on slow fire for 25-35 minutes and you have an easy and delicious recipe! 🍜
