September 7th, 1926, Rudy’s mass at the Church of the Good Shepard in Beverly Hills took place with people lining the leafy sidewalks surrounding the church paying their respects.
Newsreel cameras captured the arrival of Rudy’s body and hundredths of policemen guarded the throngs of people trying to capture a last glance of their dead idol.
After the service Rudy’s body took its final journey to the Hollywood Cemetery located at Santa Monica Boulevard - the streets were lined with thousands of weeping people.
The cortege was greeted by Father Mullins and the altar boys at the steps of the Cathedral Mausoleum whilst blossoms drifted through the warm air - distributed by two aeroplanes hired by Rudy’s former employee Luther Mahoney.
Pola Negri arrived at the Mausoleum with Alberto Guglielmi (Valentino) displaying great emotional agony.
Celebrities mourners attending the service included- Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Marion Davies, June Mathis, Silvano Balboni, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, William Randolph Hearst, Rod la Roque, Vilma Banky, Francis X. Bushman, Bebe Daniels, Monty Banks, Agnes Ayres, Manuel Reachi, Gertrude Astor, Dolores del Rio, Billie Dove, Clarence Brown, Jackie Coogan, Alan Hale, Ernst Lubitsch, Louella O. Parsons, Mabel Normand, Norman Kerry, Jean Hersholt, Mae Murray, King Vidor, Irving Thalberg, Gertrude Olmstead and many, many more.
And there he rests in eternal peace and his soul & spirit in paradise.
