Breakfast first captured my heart earlier this year with their debut song Diane, an ominously edged yet sugary alt pop song inspired by cult television series Twin Peaks. I had just finished watching both seasons of the show not long prior, and I’m always fond of connecting the dots between different forms of art, ie. Alt-J ’s Mathilda, or Kate Bush’s penchant for literary references in her music. Breakfast returns today with Sofia, which continues to bring in that dichotomy of sound I first fell in love with on Diane. Again, Sofia is a dreamy, saccharine song. In fact, it even boasts some very intoxicating, emotive horns. But again, there’s an off kilter, unbalanced quality to the song that gives it a dark, haunting, and forlorn effect, which is partially liberated by the second half’s uptick in sensual R&B groove and an onslaught of loose and airy horns. Sofia is the fourth in a series of mind bending tunes release by the Los Angeles based band in advance of their upcoming debut EP, due out in June.

Blooms is breathtaking once again on new tune Love, a beautiful, opulent electronic R&B and pop ballad produced by P*nut and Gil Lewis. It’s a magnificent follow up to her acclaimed debut EP, If, from last year. Love is an exquisite taste off her follow up EP, Still, which will be out this summer. As before, Blooms’ immaculate vocals and graceful, elegant delivery remind me of London Grammar, but with a touch of BANKS’ darker, smokiness, all steeped in a mysterious, sultry allure. There’s also a soft, rich groove not unlike that of The Night VI with a touch of HAIM, and some satiny plushness like that of WET and Shura. Love is an altogether swooning, sigh inducing experience. That should come as no surprise.
