Someone write the fic where:

  • Jane is struggling to recover from Hoyt the first time
  • Maura is the only one who doesn’t treat her differently (but they aren’t really friends yet)
  • they start hanging out more
  • Jane’s breakthrough moment in recovering is realising that without Hoyt attacking her, Maura would never have dropped the Queen of the Dead persona/Jane would never have seen past it and Jane would rather be friends with Maura than never have gone into the basement
  • this is the first time Jane plays the “what if” game.

and then write the sequel where:

  • it’s a year after Jane goes to teach at the FBI (*adjust for where Maura has been/ what she has been doing)
  • they are back in Boston for an event/holiday/to have a serious discussion about something
  • they help out on a case whilst in town because they miss the old days
  • turns out someone they caught years before is out for revenge and targeting them
  • despite the personal nature of the threat Jane realises just how much she misses being a detective and FBI instructor is just not for her
  • Maura says she’s sorry for pushing Jane to make a life choice she now regrets, but Jane says she doesn’t regret it
  • before we find out why, there is more drama and action and villainy and Jane probably being a badass
  • and then there’s some kind of bio(?) threat at the BPD which ends up with Maura locking herself in quarantine to keep everyone else safe
  • and Jane’s talking to her through the glass all “nooo don’t sacrifice yourself the serious discussion we were going to have and the reason I don’t regret going away is its the only reason I figured out I’m madly in homo with you”
  • and Maura is all “I have been - and always shall be - deeply in love with you too”
  • (ok so the whole thing is just a rip off of Wrath of Khan with a little more homo but go with it)
  • and Jane gets dragged out of the building to safety kicking and screaming and crying
  • but bless Maura she’s a smart nugget and she saves herself (by hiding in a morgue tray cupboard thing or whatever)
  • and they all live happily ever after.
