“Live Injection” by The Upsetters from the 1969 album Return of Django released by Trojan Records.
For the most part, the Upsetters was mostly just the mad dub scientist Lee “Scratch” Perry. The band for this number was really Perry’s house band Gladdy’s All-Stars, led by the terrific Gladstone Anderson.
That’s Winston Wright killing the organ in this track. His work stands out so much that it’s hard not to be swept along in its ferocity. Wright would later go on to play on Anderson’s 1977 album, the phenomenal Gladdy Unlimited. Roots Archives also tells me that Winston played guitar on Lone Ranger’s 1979 album Barnabas In Collins Woods, featuring his hit “Barnabas Collins,” naturally. Not sure I believe that but who am I to argue with those gents?
