Ramon-Magsaysay

August 1951: Eighteen-year-old Benigno S. Aquino Jr. receives the Philippine Legion of Honor with the rank of Officer, for his service in reporting on the state of the Philippine troops in Korea. Standing beside him is Defense Secretary Ramon Magsaysay, who will soon hire the young Ninoy as an aide. [Ninoy would be conferred his second Philippine Legion of Honor just three years later.]

Recent awardees of the Ramon Magsaysay award – considered the Nobel Prize of Asia– include Habiba Sarabi (pictured), Afghanistan’s first female governor and advocate for education and girls’ empowerment, and achieved improvement in local government functionality.

Also among the five awardees was Shakti Samuha, a Nepalese organization which aims to root out human trafficking and improve the lives of trafficking survivors.

Kasi ganto nung TLE walang klase. So naka-scatter kami sa hallway and room. Lumabas ako tapos nakita ko si RJ sa stairs ng fire exit. Sya lang mag-isa dun. So nilapitan ko. Sabi ko uyy ano problema. May pinakita sya na papel sa folder. Nakasulat, bibitiw na sya as president tapos bibigay sa adviser namin. So parang ako, bakit? Kaya I gave it away kanina. The Ramon Magsaysay Award is conferred annually to “individuals and organizations whose contributions have enhanced this creative tradition of selfless service to the peoples of Asia,” that is, “regardless of race, nationality, creed or gender.”

The Award has six categories: government service; public service; community leadership; journalism, literature and creative communication arts; and peace and international understanding; and emergent leadership.

Established in 1957, thanks to the generous support of the  Rockefeller Brothers, the medal was born out of a grieving nation who’s dear leader just passed away suddenly in a plane crash not so different from that of Sec. Robredo.

The winners of this year’s prestigious awards are:

Chen Shu-Jiu of Taiwan, the generous and humble vegetable vendor who gave millions to charity

Romulo Davide of the Philippines, the scientist/agriculturist who wanted “to give the farmers the dignity they deserve” by the use of science

Kulandei Francis of India, the great social worker who raised the bar on social work in India by Integrated Village Development Project’s women’s self-help groups

Syeda Rizwana Hasan of Bangladesh, the brave female lawyer who fought “powerful private corporations that converted wetlands into commercial real estate in utter disregard for the law”

Yang Saing Koma of Cambodia, the ingenious agronomist instrumental in bringing development to his country by means of agriculture

Ambrosius Ruwindrijarto of Indonesia, the bold campaigner against illegal forest exploitation and a great advocate of his country’s indigenous peoples.

Congratulations, awardees! Glad to have witnessed the solemn awarding yesterday. May you continue on the good work even if your award is forgotten, as all awards are bound to be.

The Sunday Times Magazine captioned this photo, “Still carrying his fiber bag, an old beggar walks into the Palace and looks up at the furnishings.”

During President Ramon Magsaysay’s term, no door or gate was barred to the people. On his first “at home” as Chief Executive–the day of his inaugural–the Philippines Free Press wrote: “the common people turned out en masse:”

Men, women, and children, many of them barefooted, many others in slippers or in bakya [clogs], streamed through the palace gates, milled around the President and shook hands with him, and then walked in and out of the rooms… Protocol Officer Manuel Zamora said that around 80,000 people entered the palace grounds. The visitors drank 19,200 bottles of soft drinks and ate 10,000 sandwiches.

That is a lot of sandwiches.

“Our democracy would die, kung wala si Magsaysay”

Somehow I’m kinda scared that this is true

I mean Magsaysay’s administration is considered to be the most corruption-free of all the Philippine presidents.

Truth or just a propaganda? It is up to you to decide whether the information presented here is anchored on facts or just merely baseless accounts intended to mar the Aquino image.

This is just a warning. The video is emotionally infectious. If you want to validate the information presented here, then that is a duty we Filipinos must do.

Champion of the Masses, also Champion of Piña

Ramon del Fierro Magsaysay, or Ramon for short, was the third President of the Third Republic of the Philippines during the 1950s. Magsaysay, hailed by his countrymen as ‘Champion of the Masses’, was commanding yet charismatic, and his grounded approach to leadership drew the public close to him. Robert A. Heinlein, author of the novel turned movie Starship Troopers, would even refer to him as an expert on psychological warfare because he was being the Secretary of National Defense after being Congressman and before becoming Head-of-State.

This particular political icon was also the first individual to introduce the Barong Tagalog in the Malacañang. In the Election of 1953, Magsaysay was elected president over the incumbent Quirino and was sworn into office with him wearing the Barong Tagalog, a first by a Philippine president. Can you say faccione? Winner!

In commemoration of the 56th Death Anniversary of Ramon Magsaysay, the Philippines’ seventh president and most arguably the most loved-president as he restored the people’s trust and confidence with the government and military.

The former engineer who bravely fought for his country in World War Two served as a Congressman after the war and was appointed Defense Secretary by President Elpidio Quirino. He ran for office in 1953 against Quirino and succeeded in a landslide win, which was the biggest in Philippine electoral history.

Under Magsaysay’s presidency, the Philippines’ was at its breakthrough in global politics as it launched a foreign policy supporting the West against the spread of communism. The Philippines was at its most cleanest, most well-governed and most corruption-free and most influential stage. Its military and economy were at its peak and Filipinos all over were given outstanding recognition in the cultural realm.

Do note that this does not mean that you have to vote for Mitos Magsaysay or Jun Magsaysay in the upcoming midterm elections… especially Mitos Magsaysay.

They say that there are thousands of reasons for you to lament. But have you heard of the good news? There’s still yet millions of reasons for you to be happy.

Yes, I’m really enjoying my practice teaching with my students from Ramon Magsaysay High School. Fragments of scenes during the Book Parade for the English Month are shown above. IV-Charity first chose Lord of the Rings however because of time constraint, they cannot anymore produce costumes and so we have decided to choose an achievable yet impact making book theme for this, THE PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN. Guess what, the section that I am handling got the most appraisals. *then projects a humble smile*
