The Bastard Child/Children of War (2014)

Set in the 1970s, the film follows three separate stories during the Bangladesh War, during which time thousands of women were raped and millions of people were killed. It’s about how rape and religion were used as war weaponry. The movie covers a period of nine months showcasing the atrocities and the inhumane methods adopted by the military of West Pakistan with the support of the Americans and the Chinese. Pakistani soldiers are shown going on a rampage killing and raping hundreds of thousands of men and women across the region. This movie is an attempt to bring out the ugly truth about the war. It is an expression of the double standards of bystanders and those who continue to shut their eyes or say nothing today not wanting to shed light or stop to think about gruesome side to the war. As the film progresses towards its climax, the three stories begin to intertwine with one another.

Two movies that draw on Rabindranath Tagore’s life.

The first, Kadambari, is on his sister-in-law Kadambari Devi who committed suicide at an early age. Pics 1 and 2 are of Konkona Sen-Sharma and Parambrata Chatterjee as Kadambari and Rabindranath in the movie.

The second, Jeevan Smriti, is a documentary based on Tagore’s life and made for Doordarshan for the author’s 150th death anniversary by Rituparno Ghosh. The documentary spans Tagore’s life from his childhood to his death.  Raima Sen and Samadarshi Dutta play Kadambari and Rabindranath.

Both films draw on the many images of the Tagore family for costuming, the latter more so it would appear from the stills.

The actress Raima Sen in her family’s household in South Kolkata. Sen descends from a famous acting dynasty: her grandmother is the screen legend Suchitra Sen, and her mother is the actress Moon Moon Sen. As is common in Bengali culture, Raima still lives at home with her family — when she’s in Kolkata, at least. Sen, who’s active on the Indian social scene, also spends time in Mumbai. Her sister, the actress Riya Sen, keeps a room at the house as well.
