I missed it on April 8th. But I have always felt it would have been more appropriate to have the fictional celebration coincide with Record Store Day. And since I will be laid up slamming shots of dayquil, I will pretend it is so while I think about all the awesome shit I’m not getting. Bummertowwwwwn.
RSD HAUL! Featuring my very appropriate outfit (that t says “the original mp3 - vinyl is final) and manicure (that color is called Liquid Vinyl. I kid you not.)
ANYWAY here’s what I got: Nick Drake Compilation 180 gram LP; Elliott Smith Alternate Versions from Either/Or 7” (I almost had to fight a dude twice my size for this. Record collecting is a contact sport, y’all); Burger Records “A Taste of Burger Records” compilation tape (this thing is so sick, they were playing it in store and I could not stop dancing. 57 tracks for $7.50, if you get anything it should be this), and lots of free loot from the lovely record store The End of All Music.
I waited in line from 7:45 til 10 for this and it was so worth it. In fact, it was part of the fun. I hope y’all also had a wonderful RSD 2013. Now I’m going back to sleep cuz vinyl hunting is exhausting.
This year, me and my buddy Lloyd went to attend RSD 2013 at Banquet Records. Usually we turn up a bit later and miss out on a couple of items. This year, however, we decided to turn up the night before and wait outside until they opened. We arrived at about 11:30pm on the Friday evening (we were 2nd & 3rd in the queue) and waited until they opened at 8am to get the releases we wanted. Needless to say, we each got a great haul and managed to get the majority of items we were after.
My haul this year:
Men Without Hats - The Safety Dance (30th Anniversary 7" Picture disc) Peace - California Daze (7" Picture Disc) Phoenix - Entertainment (7" Grey Marble Effect) The Doors - Soul Kitchen (7" Clear) David Bowie - The Stars (Are Out Tonight)/Where Are We Now? (7" White) Foals - My Number/Bluebird (7") Pink Floyd - See Emily Play (7" Pink) Grateful Dead // Dr. John // The Dixie Cups - Iko Iko (Secret 7", Red w/Blue splatter) MGMT - Alien Days (Cassette) The Human League - Don’t You Want Me? (12" Single) Metronomy - Pip Paine(Pay The £5000 You Owe) (12" LP) Paul McCartney & Wings - Maybe I’m Amazed (12" Single) Tame Impala - Tame Impala (12" Red EP) CHVRCHES - Recover (12" Orange EP) The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psycho Candy (12" Translucent White w/Red Splatter LP) The White Stripes - Elephant (12" Red/Black & White LP) Mystery Jets - Live At The Royal Festival Hall (12" Gold LP)
So please go to your local record store and buy some music. We know that a lot of you download your music but on this one day each year.. it’s best to shop local and support your local indie record shops.
To make it easy for you, we will give you a list of some record stores in Tampa Bay!
Daddy Kool Records - Downtown St. Pete Bananas Music - St. Pete Disc Exchange - St. Pete Asylum Sights & Sounds - St. Pete Mojo Books & Music - Tampa (by USF) Sound Exchange - 3 Locations (Pinellas Park, Tampa, Brandon)
So, Record Store Day has been pretty good fun so far and we still have live sets from No UFO’s and Loscil to look forward to. One of the nicest surprises of the day came when I discovered that the limited edition Biggie Smalls album I bought has what we used to call a “good number”. Twenty-seven out of 3000!
