So let me just get real here for a second

On Facebook, people have been saying alot about this dickhole who shot the lion.

What bothers me most is people who say “it doesn’t matter”, or “it’s just an animal”, or “you should spend your time backing animal legislation, our carbon footprint, and environmental issues that matters more”, or “considering everything else going on in the world, especially with race, why are people getting more upset about a lion than XYZ”, and that it’s a “non-controversial issue that people who don’t follow politics or read the news get up in arms about” (no lie, someone seriously said that).

Sit the fuck down.

First of all, it does matter, because it is an endangered species, and this man violated the laws of an African nation, as well as international poaching laws, when he killed this animal. This man had the lion illegally lured out of it’s protection sphere to shoot it. Lowering our carbon footprint and caring for creatures that have inhabited the Earth for much longer than us go hand in hand as a desire to promote Environmentalism.

Also, for many, this invasion has significant metaphor for the racial issues that are going on in our country and around the world in general. (ie, white man barging into an African country and killing a protected and loved native African creature that brought much joy to the country and it’s people, as well as injuring the tourism to that nation surrounding said animal).

People who care about this issue shouldn’t be pigeon-holed due to other important things going on. Don’t you think that someone that holds much respect for animal life would also feel the same about their fellow man? I personally respect all life. I do read the news. I do follow politics. I believe this issue is in support of other pressing issues going on.

Do not confuse this with a lack of support of legal big game hunting. I have no problem with that.

BUT THIS MAN HAS DONE THIS BEFORE. THIS IS A BLACK RHINO. THEY ARE CRITICALLY ENDANGERED.

HE HAS NO REGARD FOR INTERNATIONAL LAW. HE SHOT THE LION WITH A BOW AND ARROW, AND LET IT SUFFER FOR 40 HOURS BEFORE HE GAVE IT PEACE BY SHOOTING IT WITH A GUN. THAT IS FUCKED UP. NO CREATURE, OR HUMAN, DESERVES THAT.

Cecil had a personality. He enjoyed tourists. He liked to strut and show off for them. He was well known and loved.

Marginalizing this as a “non-controversial issue” is promoting a narrow way of thinking about it.

I love lions, they are my favorite animal. Cecil was beautiful. And he deserves, and earned, mourning.
