Pyramid-design

This is the Great Pyramid of King Khufu.  Everybody knows the Great Pyramid of King Khufu, but you probably don’t know about the Shit Pyramids of his father, King Sneferu.  This is a shame, because they are amazing.

When King Sneferu came to the throne of Egypt, the cool thing that all the pharaohs had was a Step Pyramid, like the original one built by King Djoser and designed by Imhotep (not the mummy).  King Sneferu could easily have had one one because his predecessor King Huni had died before his could be finished. All Sneferu had to do was step in and put the last few blocks on.

But King Sneferu had a vision.  He didn’t want any old Step Pyramid.  He was going to build Egypt’s first smooth-sided pyramid, and make King Huni’s pyramid way taller in the bargain.  It didn’t work.  The core of Huni’s pyramid couldn’t handle the modifications and nowadays the Step Pyramid at Meidum looks like this:

It’s not on a hill - that’s the outer layers of the pyramid that have fallen down all around it.  The name of the structure in Arabic is Heram el-Kaddaab, which means something like The Sort-Of Pyramid.

Anyway, King Sneferu was understandably disappointed and made his pyramid-builders start over from scratch at a different site.  Apparently having learned nothing about the Big Fat Nowhere that hubristic pyramid ambition was going to get him, this pyramid was designed to be even taller and pointier than the last effort!  Too tall and pointy, in fact - the bedrock proved to be less stable than he might have hoped, and by the time the pyramid was half-finished stuff was already moving and cracking inside of it.  There are ceilings in this pyramid that are to this day partially held up by wooden beams.

The builders seem to have panicked and decided that the only way to finish the pyramid without another disaster was to make the top half lighter than the bottom half.  They did this by changing the angle of the slope, ending up with a pyramid that looks like this:

Egyptologists call this one the Bent Pyramid for fairly obvious reasons.  Uniquely among Egyptian Pyramids, it has most of its smooth outer blocks intact, rather than having them all stolen to build other stuff (most of medieval Cairo is built from the skin of the Giza pyramids).  I’m guessing this is because nobody dared touch the thing for fear the whole structure would come down like a giant limestone game of Jenga.

I’m sure the pyramid-builders were very proud of this solution.  Sneferu appears to have been less so.  He had them move over about half a mile and start over.  Again.  Why only half a mile when he had them move 34 miles between the Sort-of Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid is a mystery.  I think he wanted to keep them in sight of the Bent Pyramid so they could look at it and feel ashamed every once in a while.

And there they built Sneferu’s third pyramid, which is called the Red Pyramid.  As pyramids go, it’s a very cautious one - it’s got the shallowest slope rise of any Egyptian pyramid, and while it’s the same height as the Bent Pyramid it spreads its weight over a much greater base area, making it far more stable.  Sneferu seems to have been happy with this one, because he was buried in it.  Either that, or after a forty-eight-year reign he just finally died and that was the pyramid they used because it was the nicest of the three.

These three pyramids together actually contain substantially more stone than the Great Pyramid of Sneferu’s son Khufu.  By the time Sneferu died, his workforce had honed themselves into a lean, mean pyramid-building machine.  They had already made every possible pyramid mistake.  So when Khufu announced that he didn’t just want a great pyramid, but The Great Pyramid, these guys built him a pyramid so fucking great that we now think aliens must have done it.

It was as true in Ancient Egypt as it is now.

I watch a lot of documentaries. I think they are incredible tools for learning and increasing our awareness of important issues. The power of an interesting documentary is that it can open our minds to new possibilities and deepen our understanding of the world.

On this list of mind expanding documentaries you will find different viewpoints, controversial opinions and even contradictory ideas. Critical thinking is recommended. I’m not a big fan of conspiracy documentaries but I do like films that challenge consensus reality and provoke us to question the everyday ideas, opinions and practices we usually take for granted.

Watching documentaries is one of my favorite methods of self-education. If I find a documentary inspiring, I usually spend more time researching the different ideas and interesting people interviewed in the film. I hope you find these documentaries as enlightening as I did!

I know it’s kind of a low res photo, but I got my newest issue of BBC Shop’s mag today and this was in there. It’s backwards! As far as I can remember (and I’ve been getting this a couple years now) they haven’t flipped a promo photo. Like, sure, maybe it was a design choice, but if it was, it was really weird design choice.

(Submitted by red-pen-revolution)

Oh! This is interesting! Is this the American or Canadian one (since I know those are the only two shops still in operation)? I ask because I get them too and I haven’t received mine yet!

Yeah, why would they flip the image in the magazine? I mean… from a graphic design standpoint, one of the things you never should do is flip and image with people in it, especially one like this where the viewer CAN TELL IT WAS FLIPPED. I’m looking at the pic and I see NO logical reason it should have been flipped unless they have an intern who doesn’t know better (I will concede this is highly probable. We were all interns once and we all only learned these things on-the-job). By “logical” I mean that the image isn’t “heavier” on one side or another and because of the nature of the image you’re always drawn to Sherlock and John. And because of THAT it only makes it more obvious that something seems off with the image even for even the general audience because… John and Sherlock are in the wrong places.

Listen, I have a healthy dose of skepticism and I know that this could EASILY be a graphic design faux-pas, but there’s also that niggling possibility: is this the BBC America / Canada telling us this is a mirror series? How much to they know? Did the designer receive the instructions from H/O and said “but you’re not supposed to flip the image!” to which H/O says “Do it, anyway”. At which point the designer rolls their eyes and says, “ooookkkaaayyy”. Because magazines like this have to go through corporate for approval to publish. So it could be these were directions from home office, and they just DID IT because you gotta appease the crazy higher ups.

So yeah, REGARDLESS of intern or not, this was a DELIBERATE move, mirroring the image to promote S4. Now there’s also the possibility that the higher up didn’t even notice, and the designer themselves are on Team Fucky™ and tried to see if they could get away with it without BBC noticing. Clearly they did.

ALWAYS the possibility of a mistake, but this is a pretty noticeable one to make. And you are right, in the 3 years I have also been receiving my copy, they have never mirrored the images. NEVER.

Interesting.

EDIT: People are pointing out to me that they are trying to keep Sherlock above his own name. Which, is a valid point, BUT I HAVE seen the design before where the prices are first and the show description is on the right hand side so… this actually could be a moot point. Especially on a “right hand” page. Putting the name on the right would actually not be odd on a right hand page. In newspaper / magazine design we used to do the “reverse pyramid” design, so that it’s “heavier” on the outside so that it draws the reader’s eye.

Remembering the original “Image Works” at Epcot’s Imagination Pavilion.

From 1983-1998 you could visit a magical place in Epcot’s Imagination Pavilion called the “Image Works” Yes, I know there is currently “Imageworks: The What If Labs” in the Imagination Pavilion, but it is not the original and doesn’t even come close to being as amazing as its predecessor. The original was located at the top level of the pavilion allowing guests an outside view through the glass pyramid. The beautifully designed spiral staircase and glass elevator which took you to the “Image Works” is still there and can be seen in the current Imagination store. At the top of this staircase/elevator you would enter the “Image Works”, a place where guests could test their imaginations. At the heart of this creative playground was the Rainbow Corridor/Sensor Maze, a colorful tunnel of neon that changed colors as you walked through. The “Image Works” also included: Figment’s Coloring Book, Magic Palettes, Light Writers, Stepping Tones, Pin Screens, Bubble Music, Dreamfinder’s School of Drama, Giant Kaleidoscopes, Image Warp, Lumia and Electronic Philharmonic. The “Image Works” closed on October 10, 1998. The new “Imageworks: The What If Labs” opened on October 1, 1999, in the new downstairs location. Sadly, the whole upstairs area that housed the original “Image Works” is now closed. Check out the awesome video posted here for a look at the sad current state of the “Image Works” next to footage from back in the day.

i felt like i wasnt going to address it but i see more and more people taking other people down for not being “true” fans or for being “new fans”. i just wanted to take the time on here to really express that FOB has always tried to embrace an inclusive vibe- we are all part of this thing. all of us were new fans at some time- if you hung out with me in my pre-teen years i would have driven you insane with my ridiculous metaliica fan boying. even just yesterday i had a geeky fan moment with slash….

i think some of this speaks to an influx of new fans- people that may have found their way due to bands like one direction and 5sos- ive met both of these bands- both are full of hardworking, talented, but most importantly nice kids. everyone has to start somewhere- there was a time when our band was on TRL and i remember some of the backlash us and other bands got simply due to being on a video show that teenage america watched… but the most important part of this as it relates to FOB is that the more fans there are and the more bands that are being played on the radio the more we can tour around the world- it keeps the ecosystem that our band exists in thriving. think about that the next time you take a shot at someone for not knowing something or being a “big” enough fan.

that being said its a great and wonderful part of being a human being to have your own opinions- just remember to express them in empathetic ways- everyone has their own unique struggle.

i wanted to include some stuff we really built our stage show for monumentour around in case you are coming so you know some of the backstory to some of the elements.

there are many images of chicago (our hometown) and the idea that it doesnt matter how many times you fail as long as you keep getting up… the intro to our set is something weve been working on for awhile.

the floating stage is something that has been kicking around as an idea since the “black clouds” tour- but we finally were able to create a design that we felt was versatile enough to bring out on tour. it is all based upon pyramid design and shapes.

speaking of pyramids this was an updated idea of content for arms race.

for stagewear we had our friend dr. romanelli create a lambskin jacket (andys is denim & vegan friendly). which we then had theresa sharpe from best ink tattoo with images from the youngblood chronicles. this process was pretty insane as they are not painted, they are actually tattooed on the leather.

the phoenix always had a fighter pilot vibe to me… the content reflects that everything from cockpit to aerial maneuvers.

just one yesterday was written with this scene from the modern romeo and juliet in mind so it seemed kind of fitting to fix it into the background of the song live.

and finally the encore stage design is a nod to one of our favorite fantasy movies of all time the labyrinth.

we hope you come out to a show and have a blast. keep an open mind and heart…

The Time Temple is an alignment code, witness the wisdom of #Thoth. the #Giza plateau his architectural masterpiece on earth. Thoth built the Great Pyramid and designed the layout of smaller pyramids and temples that gives it a perfectly matched scale diagram of our solar system. The map is a perfect match right down to the astronomical units(au) which tells you the distance each planet from the sun and one another. Their orders are precise and the planet sizes are perfect scale relative to the pyramid or temple on the diagram. Re: Kubo/Bleach: "He truly believed he was the next Tolkien" Holy cow, I never considered this! It makes sense though. The last arc was all sideshows, teasing future IchiRuki interaction but never delivering. If he thought we'd be pleased by all the "cool stuff" he was drawing then he really lost touch with his fan base.

Every digression that Kubo made away from the core cast (i.e., Ichigo and Rukia, and the nakama) was done in the service of bloating the cast and filling in more backstory, yet none that ever really achieved anything. He was always increasing the scale, but never increasing the depth. It always felt like there would be these vast, stunning reveals just around the corner, but they never came. And as I reflect on it, I don’t think they were ever planned. It was a pyramid scheme, designed to get bigger and bigger without ever actually paying off.

The simplest evidence of that to me is the Four Great Noble Houses. Four. How fucking hard is it to give four surnames? Yet still, to this day, we only know of Shihouin and Kuchiki. Who were the other two? Fuck the filler and fuck the novels. Why isn’t this shit in canonical material?

Logically, I can tell that since Shihouin and Kuchiki are heavily represented in the Gotei 13, and the other two clearly aren’t, that they must be very important in Central 46. (The Gotei 13′s main logistics infrastructure seems to be handled by the 4th and 12th Divisions [e.g., R&D and medical/logistics], and Zero Division [e.g., zanpakutou manufacture] so the other two must be administrative/judicial.) Hey, you know what? All of Central 46 was murdered by Aizen. Would’ve been a real great time to fill in that gap in our knowledge!

Fucking nope! Never comes up. Literally never happened. Also, why were they the Great Noble Houses? What did they do? What were all those Shihouin artifacts? Did Kuchiki really maintain records? Did they do their own, or the central records? You don’t get to find out!

How many databooks did this series have? And did they ever tell us anything of genuine value? Nope, they’re full of shit like “Renji doesn’t like spicy food.” Well that’s great and all, but how about some political intrigue, in this corrupt administrative afterlife that is clearly hella fucked up?

Nope! Maybe after we kill Yhwach! Then you’ll get all the answers about the Soul King and Zero Division and—JAKES! Fuck you, reader!

The whole thing was a con. The illusion of depth was a con. There was no depth. He had no plan. If he did, he threw his notes in a fire when he decided to fuck it all up, because otherwise that shit would’ve been readily apparent ages ago. Every time he should’ve focused on actually fleshing out his world, he’d just introduce a dozen or two new villains and some new supervillain, and kick the can down the road.

It was literally all “cool stuff,” none of which was all that cool. (Oh, look, some throwaway character lost an arm again, whoo, how thrilling!)

So not only did he think he was a hot-shit worldbuilder and content creator, but this guy thought he was a master of stakes, tension, and pacing too. And the fact is, he sucked at all of them. It was basically the manga equivalent of Lost. Lots of great ideas, and just the worst execution ever.

I HIT 300 FOLLOWERS????

@princeminhyung127: You are so nice!!! I know we met in our group chat, but after you requested some mood boards, we started talking and I think you’re hilarious, and so incredibly nice. You say the nicest things about my mood boards and my works in general! Thank you for all the love and support, I hope we become great friends!

@evalocity: Ma nouvelle amie! Nous avons rencontré notre ami Donnabelle, et je suis si ravi que nous devenons des amis proches! Je t’aime Elo!~
(My new friend! We have become friends through our friend Donnabelle, and I am so excited that we are becoming closer friends! I love you Elo!~)
