There is something undeniably nostalgic about Patsy’s Rats, a rock n roll band from Portland, and their effortless, self-proclaimed 70s sound.
Patsy’s Rats’ ringleaders, being Patsy Gelb and Christian Blunda, are both musicians with plenty of experience under their guitar straps. Blunda is the leader of punk band Mean Jeans and Gelb is the former vocalist and bassists of Scavenger Cunt.
Together, with a mess of other “rascals,” the group produces bedroom pop with rock influenced tunes that make you feel like you’re in the title sequence of a coming-of-age tv show. A specific track that embodies such anticipation for adolescent antics is “Rock & Roll Friend,” the opening song from the band’s first EP, Patsy’s Rats S/T EP. “Rock & Roll Friend” is great for getting pumped up without being cheesy, it’s instrumental bouncy and lyrics honest, during the chorus Blunda and Gelb chanting “Rock n Roll Friend, visit again/I’m starting to miss you.”
Overall, each song Patsy’s Rats have thus far released have the power to make you wanna dance around mindlessly until you can’t anymore, so you just lie on the floor, still listening, in awe of how awesome the songs are. Quirky, pop-esque vocals and lyrics paired with pure rock n roll guitar parts makes for a youthful combination worth listening to.
