Early design work for my Doctor Who stuff!  Patrick Troughton had an interesting face, that lends itself to being both heroic and comical.  It was really fun to play with that balance!  I think the animation being released has a heavy emphasis on photoreferenced artwork, which I think is a real shame.  By not understanding the shapes fully (or not designing them in a way to be fully understood), it’s so easy to have stiff and clunky animation, especially when there aren’t photos to rely on for specific actions or angles.  The Doctor Who episodes I saw from this time have such a cartoon-y feel to them, and I thought it would be really cool to emphasise that.  They have that balance between cartoonishness and theatrical melodrama.

I haven’t done any character design work for animation in a while (I’ve only been doing character designs for my own book at the moment).  It’s a really fun challenge to try and communicate clearly how you want something to be- enough that other people can draw it themselves.  Can’t wait to do this sort of thing again.

To celebrate 50 years of the 2nd Doctor I drew the man himself ..Patrick Troughton!
