Dominique, you are right to feel that these are staged because there is a lot of phoniness around. The shootings themselves, I think, have other contributing factors and are “real” in some sense–although I’m open to being proven wrong–but assuming they are real, the media hyper focus and razzle-dazzle ovaries-to-the-wall type of coverage selection on mass shootings is a product of a certain capitalist staginess, orchestration, kinda conspiracy/market reality. On Saturday that young black man Jonathan Ferrell, 24, who crashed his car went to find help and a woman called 911 on him and the cop who showed up just straight up shot that young man instead of helping him. Now that happens all the time, but the media again gonna cover the stupid-ass mass shooting for the next 6 months and in that time dozens of primarily young people of color will be shot dead in a hundred different shootings that most people will never even hear about–and a shocking number of those will be people killed by cops. Mass shootings is hardly anyone’s personal reality. Being shot down in your neighborhood, shot by your spouse, or shot by a cop–those are the real realities of violence in this country that the mass shooting hysteria helps us neglect and forget or just be completely unaware of. These mass shootings as stories matter, they are certainly newsworthy. We should be figuring out ways to treat the social ills that encourage their flaring up, we should be deconstructing male socialization as violent creatures and charting a new course, but instead the news points us to overhyping mass shootings as the face of gun violence in America. It’s just yellow journalism and ignoring the real stories of gun violence in America is worse–that’s a political assault that helps obscure the realities of hurting communities oppressed under capitalism in decline. So fuck the news for pimping the stories of mass shootings–and probably contributing to the encouragement of mass shootings. And fuck the news for usually being piss-poor watch dogs of the cops and having a piss-poor analysis of law enforcement and the state.
