In celebration of National Pet Day, here’s Duane Hanson’s hyperreal sculpture Woman with Dog (1977). The woman was cast from life and constructed of fiberglass-reinforced, painted resin. Her companion is molded by hand and adorned with actual dog hair. Despite their extreme realism, Hanson’s sculptures are not usually likenesses of specific people. “I’m not duplicating life,” Hanson explains. “I’m making a statement about human values.”
