#DayWithoutLatinos march draws thousands of protesters to the streets of Milwaukee

  • Thousands of protesters packed the streets of Milwaukee Monday in what organizers dubbed a “day without Latinos” march, the AP reports.
  • Demonstrators closed their business, left their jobs and flooded the city’s south side to protest immigration crackdowns promised by Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke.
  • Clarke — a right-wing hardliner and vocal surrogate for Trump — said in a Facebook post Jan. 27 that he would partner with ICE officials to round up undocumented Wisconsinites.
  • Images from the protest show a large turnout, sending a clear message that Clarke’s policies face serious opposition.
  • But dissidents remain at a disadvantage as long as Clarke is in office. And his next re-election bid isn’t until 2018. Read more (2/13/17 3:22 PM)

An endangered snow leopard named Rilu at the @MillerParkZoo.
Snow leopards have adapted to live in some of the most frigid environments on Earth. They have an incredibly strong and agile body and a white coat with black markings that blends in perfectly with their mountainside homes in central Asia. Their long thick tails can be wrapped around their bodies for warmth, and are also used to help with balance.
These big cats once ruled the Central Asian mountains, however their population has shrunk by at least 20% over the past 16 years. Poaching and illegal trade have contributed to the loss of this species over the years, as well as overstocking of the fragile, high altitude grasslands with livestock where these cats once thrived. Overstocking leads to a decline in wild prey for snow leopards, and when they turn to livestock to eat they are often shot on sight.
The good news is that snow leopards are protected throughout most of their range, and CITIES has made hunting and trading of their body parts illegal. The International @SnowLeopardTrust and Snow Leopard Conservancy are two organizations working hard to create a multi-faceted approach to the conservation of this species.

  • The woman — who asked to not be identified — told Fox 6 that a man pulled up his car next to her while she was walking home and told her to come to him.“I said to myself, ‘I am going to die today for sure,’” the woman said.
  • “So he gets up from the car and told me to come here."Then the man came to her demanding that she takes off her hijab, and the woman resisted."He said to take my hijab, my scarf,” the woman said.
  • “I tried to fight him. 'Don’t take my hijab,’ you know? So he threw me on the floor then he beat me like an animal.” Read more. (4/12/2017 1:30 PM)
