Some Hurricane Irma preparations

Seeing as how the hurricane is destined to hit the east coast of Florida and possibly other parts of the US here’s a checklist of things you’ll need in case of a power outage.

  • Flashlights, (battery operated) lanterns, candles
  • Canned foods such as chili, soup, chef boyarde
  • Peanut butter and bread
  • Water both in bottles & gallons
  • Dry pet food for your pets
  • Charcoal or firewood
  • Matches and lighters
  • Batteries in AA, AAA & 6V
  • Tampons, pads, and deodorant
  • A portable phone charger for each member of your family
  • Bags of ice + coolers
  • Toilet paper
  • 5 Gallon gas can
  • A waterproof wrist watch
  • First Aid Kit
  • Bug Spray
  • Books, playing cards, and board games (trust me, during a power outage it gets boring AF bc time feels like it’s running slow)

Also somethings to do before the Hurricane hits you

  • Make sure to do all your laundry - there’s nothing worse then having no fresh clothes to wear because of no power.
  • Set all your Soundcloud/Spotify playlists on offline mode - some good music will help make the hurricane less dreadful
  • Now is the time to finish up that jug of milk and empty your fridge of anything that could spoil/rot without refrigeration.
  • Hours before the hurricane hits, If you have a bath tub fill it up so that you can get running water for your toilet.
  • Make sure you have cash on you and that your wallet contains your state ID

Back To School Tips Master Post!

I had a few people asking me to do a back to school tips/ how to do well in school post so here it is. I’m a sophomore in college and an honors student so I plan on sharing the things that have helped me succeed. Even though these tips are things I use now in college, most of them I also used in high school so it can be applied there as well.

Organization                                                                                                           The most beneficial thing you can do is stay organized.

  1. Get a planner.- I bought mine this year at Walgreens for around $7 but it has a plastic cover so all paper ones are even cheaper. A planner is good for keeping track of when everything is due. When I get my syllabi for my classes I go through them and write down the due dates of homework, essays, tests, etc, on the day they are due. You can color code your classes or just write the class next to the assignment. This way you can look at a whole week and see everything you have due for all of your classes in one place. It’s also easier to add in things or make changes if your professor decides to due so.
  2. Use a white board- I know white boards can be expensive, so if you can’t afford one, expo markers will write on laminated paper which you can get for around $4 on Amazon. I use this to keep on my wall and write the next really important date for each class. So I have all my classes listed on the board and let’s say my next big date in Psych is a test. I’d write that date on the board, then after the test, I’d erase it and write the next important date. These dates should be in your planner as well but it’s nice to have them right in front of you at all times so you don’t turn to the next week in your planner and realize you have a test on Monday.
  3. Buy durable folders- If you’re going to be using your folders all year make sure they’ll last all year. You want to lose any of your assignments. I get plastic folders at Office Depot for $0.39 a piece. I chose a color for each class and write the class at the top in sharpie and I’m good to go!
  4. Notebooks too!- You’re going to be taking a lot of notes so make sure to keep a notebook for each class as well. Mine were $3 each at Office Depot but they have a plastic cover so if you need to save some money get the paper covers because you most likely wont reuse a notebook.
  5. Get a pack of loose leaf paper- Sometimes you have to turn things in and if you’re like me then you hate tearing it out of your notebook. But if you don’t have a problem with that then don’t worry about it!
  6. Use some sort of bag/backpack- This will help you not lose anything plus you can put water, snacks, etc in it as well!

Study Tips                                                                                                               Tests are often the biggest portion of your grade so knowing the best ways to study will help you out the most.

  1. Figure out what type of learner you are- This can greatly improve your study skills. There are visual learners; these people learn best with charts, graphs, and anything that show a visual relationship between information. So if you’re this type of person, to help study you could make charts, graphs, tables, draws arrows between points of information, or watch videos. Anything to help you see it. There are also auditory learners; these people learn best when hearing the information. So the best way for these people to study is to recite information out loud, or if your course has an audio book to listen to it. You could also have a friend read information to you and you say it as well. Some people are reading/writing learners; they do best when reading the text and writing down important points/taking notes. This is the type of learner I am so to help me study, I write out my own flashcards, I copy power points into my notes, and as I read my chapters I write the important information.  Something else that is good for these kind of learners is to make little quizzes for yourself. There are also kinesthetic learners; they learn best with more hands on activities. This can be hard to do especially with some subjects. If you can physically do what you’re studying then do it. If not, make a game out of it. For example, ask yourself questions and if you get it right take a shot at a basketball hoop or a soccer goal (if you don’t have these things use a paper ball and your trashcan or anything you can substitute. Figuring out which learner you are will greatly improve how you study.
  2. Don’t wait until right before a test- Cramming your brain with all the information a few days before a test will not help you remember and only stress you out. This is called Massed Practice and is proven to be a waste of time and information is not retained well. Study a little everyday or every other day. This is called the Spacing Effect and is proven to improve retention and recall of information. So it is best to do short sessions of study over a long period of time rather than a long session all at once.
  3. Find a good place to study- If you like quiet places and your house/dorm is too loud go to a library or outside if it’ s a nice day.  If you like a lot of background noise play some music or go to a coffee shop.

Overall Tips                                                                                                            These tips are still really important but I don’t have enough that fit together to make another header.

  1. Work on what’s due first- Some people think it’s always best to work on the important things first but that’s not always the case. If your essay is due in two weeks and you have an assignment due in a few days then finish the assignment first. You’ll still have plenty of time for your essay. I suggest doing all your work but if something happens to where you just can’t then yes do the more important thing because it’ll be a bigger part of your grade.
  2. Writing Centers- A lot of colleges/universities have writing centers.  If you’re not the best at writing or just need some help you can make an appointment at the writing center where someone highly qualified in writing will read your paper/essay and help you with grammar, punctuation, idea flow, overall organization etc. I highly suggest checking to see if your school has one of these.
  3. Check your email/Blackboard/whatever your professor uses- This is where they may add extra assignments/ cancel class and not mention it in class. It’s always important to check.
  4. Try to relax- I know it can be hard, especially for students with depression, anxiety, and other mental/physical illnesses but it’s important to always take a moment and calm down. Take breaks from your work and do something you enjoy for at least a few minutes everyday. If you need a nap, take a nap. just set an alarm to pick back up on your work later.
  5. Don’t worry about being perfect- This is still something I’m working on myself but getting better at. Last semester I got a B for the first time since my sophomore year of high school and it bothered me to no end. But, I told myself I did my best, and as a person with bad social anxiety I’m okay with my B in public speaking. So for anyone else who feels like they have to keep their 4.0 all 4 years, don’ t panic if you don’t. There’s nothing wrong with not being perfect, almost no one graduates college with a 4.0. Always do your best, but don’t put too much pressure on yourself. I cannot stress this enough.
  6. Take classes you enjoy- Hopefully you’re in a major that you enjoy so you wont hate your classes too much but it’s still important to try to take a fun class every once in awhile. If you like art, take an art class. Then, you’re still doing work but also doing something you like.
  7. Get a tutor- If you’re not doing as well in a class as you would like, don’t be afraid to get a tutor. Most universities offer tutors who are students that would love to help you and wont be judgmental at all. There’s nothing wrong with getting a little extra help and tutors are often people who have already passed the class with an A so they’ll be very good resources.
  8. Take care of yourself- Overall, make sure you’re eating well and drinking water throughout the day. Sometimes it’s impossible, but try to get enough sleep. If you go out to party watch out for yourself and others. Practice self care and if things get too stressful and you need help don’t be afraid to ask.

I know this post is very long, but I wanted to share everything I could for anyone who wanted help. If I think of anything else I’ll definitely add it later. I hope everyone has a great semester and school year! Good luck to everyone!

Sigils and How to Use Them:  -  (A Master Post)

This post isn’t about creating sigils but, rather what they are and how to use them to their fullest potential. A Sigil is a symbol, but not just any ordinary symbol. They are sigils that are created with intention, will, and magic. They are vessels that carry your intentions- a means of making them manifest. There are three very distinct views on this matter: Instant, Passive, and Active.I personally believe all are correct. However, one method may be more suitable for certain Sigils than the others.

Please note:

 It is very important that, while you are drawing the Sigil, you are present and mindfully putting the right intention into it.

If you are totally new, here are some examples of some Sigils that I have made:
~~~Sigils~~~
~~~How I Make my Sigils~~~
~~~Sigil Chains~~~
Sigil Activation:
Sigils are activated upon creation but can be further powered using any of the following three methods. If you have a book made specifically for Sigils, (especially if you create or keep Sigils for cursing) be sure to create or draw Sigils on the front and back covers that will cancel the effects of all other sigils within the book.
Instant Sigils:
This method is a One-Shot-Johnny. It is the strongest in terms of manifestation. However, the effects are very short-lived. This method involves destroying the Sigil. Once the Sigil is destroyed its power is at 150% but decreases back to 0% at an exponential rate. Depending on the caster, it could last up to two days.
I use this method to amplify my spells and intentions.
Here’s how it works:
Take a Sigil, let’s say one for empowering intentions, and draw it onto a piece of paper.
Charge the Sigil. You can do this is sooooooo many ways. ‘pray’ to it, masturbate to it, set crystals on it, leave it in the moonlight, etc.
Then, once you have set your spell and have started the ritual, burn the Sigil. You are not limited in how you can destroy the Sigil! You can burn, tear, shred, melt, smudge, or soak them (If drawn in water-based ink). The effects will be manifest immediately.
Passive Sigils:
In this form of Sigilwork, Sigils will only manifest while they aren’t remembered. The moment that they are remembered, they lose their effect, or it becomes very weak.
Here’s how it works:
Take a Sigil, let’s say one for positivity, and draw it on a piece of paper.
Then charge the Sigil.
Then, place the Sigil in a place which no one will find or see it, not even yourself.
The Sigil will really start working its magic once you have entirely forgotten about it.
Active Sigils:
Active sigils are powered by remembering them and feeding them intention.
Here’s how it works:
Take a Sigil, let’s say one for protection from negative energy, and draw it on your skin, a piece of paper, or a miscellaneous object you keep on you. Then you would rub or ‘pray’ to the Sigil whenever you needed it, pouring the intention of protection into it as you did so. This strengthens the Sigil and causes a more direct manifestation at the same time. You can charge these Sigils the same as Passive Sigils.
Sigils in Spellcraft:
As I had mentioned above, I use sigils to amplify my focus or intentions.
There are other ways to use them in spells. You could even make a spell entirely from Sigils.
Here are some examples of some smaller spells that involve Sigils:
A Raven’s Breath
Snap Magic
In larger spells, you can create Spell Circles- or incorporate Sigils into Sacred Circles. Below is an example of a Spell Circle.
In the center of the circle is the Sigil that acts as the root for the entire spell. This Sigil is basically like the subject of a sentence. Whereas the symbols on the ring of the circle are the actions.
You can create Spell Circles of your own!
Step 1: Draw a circle
Step 2: Draw a Sigil inside that circle.
Step 3: Write the specified implementation of said Sigil around the perimeter of that circle. The language doesn’t matter- as long as it boosts your headspace.
(I created my own language/cipher/cryptograph for my GreyGrimoire so that peering eyes wouldn’t be able to read it.)
Step 4: Create the rest of the spell around the Spell Circle. (Whether you’re making a spell bottle, or enchanting and Item or casting a curse. Just gather your materials and build correspondences.)
Step 5: Cast that mamma jamma!
I have made a Masterpost about Spell Circles and you can find it HERE.
If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to ask me or another blog! Remember, everyone’s craft is different- These are beliefs from my craft. Though, I try to be as respectful as possible to other crafts.
Tips on Writing Characters Without Faces
so yeah, we all know that facial expressions can tell us a lot about how a character is feeling, but what if that isn’t an option? how can you make someone emote if they don’t really have standard facial features? the answer; body language.
let’s consider how emotions are conveyed on a stage production vs movie with Sweeney Todd. First, the stage play:
Note how Todd’s entire upper body goes into his gestures, how he’s single-mindedly focused on his dreams and ideals; how his hands GRAB for each imaginary ‘man’ with these sharp, aggressive, destructive movements and how that contrasts with Mrs. Lovett’s body language; how her hands linger in the air and gravitate towards Todd even after he’s pulled away, and the slow turn she gives him. It does an excellent, though exaggerated, way of conveying their relationship (her focus is on him and making him happy, his focus is entirely on revenge)
Contrast this to the movie:
Originally posted by curiousitykilledthekat
Same lines in the song, much more subtle. Lovett’s eyes still track towards Todds, which reminds us she’s still more focused on the outside, but all of the emotion is in their faces. Were this not a close-up shot in a movie it’d be very, very hard to read their expressions.
While I do recommend you watch a few stage plays (in person near the back row if you can) to actually study body language for yourself or try out charades with your face covered with friends/watch how cosplayers or mascots emote, here’s a few shorthands to get you started (US-centric so expressions may vary on your region):
Head:
  • perfectly still - fear, intense attention, feeling under scrutiny
  • tilted up - recollection, intimidation (looking down nose at threat, aiming to appear taller)
  • tilted down - intense thought, shame (avoiding eye contact), depression/sad feelings
  • turned away - not giving person full attention, avoiding subject/conflict without being combative
  • cocker-spaniel (sideways) tilt - confusion, curiosity, amusement
Hands
  • at the forehead - fatigue (wiping away sweat), illness (checking self for fever, feeling a headache), realization/memory (a ‘well duh’ tap)
  • at the eyes - fatigue or headache (shielding eyes from light), distress (blocking out a painful view, concealing tears)
  • at the nose - disgust (a pinch at the nostrils,) irritation (rubbing at sore spot on nose from glasses wear)
  • at the mouth - nausea, surprise, repressing an emotion/stopping self from saying something
  • at the chin - contemplation, tiredness (face resting in hand)
  • rubbing back of neck - a need to relax tension, embarrassment, slight unease/desire to distract self
  • at the chest - surprise, self-protection (reaction to a wounding statement, sometimes used sarcastically), strong emotions (clutching at heart, could be good-strong or bad-strong), need for security (touching necklace/adjusting clothing to conceal more)
  • at the stomach - pain (clutching, pressing), satisfaction after a meal, protectiveness towards fetus when applicable
  • at the hip(s) - confidence, intimidation, nervousness (if grabbing for weapon)
  • at groin - concealment/unease (usually male-coded as protection of genitals), politeness (hands folded in lap)
  • on thighs - exhaustion (bent over, hands on legs supporting tired upper body)
  • formed into fists - holding back an intense emotion, preparing to fight
  • toying with something - restlessness (bored, nervous energy, craving something they can’t touch) or deliberate disrespect of property (playing with personal objects someone holds dear as an intimidation tactic)
Arms
  • at sides, relaxed - default posture
  • at sides, tense - unease, restraint (soldier at attention, person holding still to avoid being attacked), fear
  • crossed at chest - disapproval, displaying authority, unease (hugging oneself)
  • crossed at stomach - pain, intense laughter (caused by sore stomach muscles from laughing)
  • up, fingers laced behind head - confidence, relaxation
  • one arm on back of furniture - confidence, invitation for someone join them
  • general rule - the further arms are away from body, the more confident/dominant a person means to appear; exposed torso indicates that they don’t see anyone around as a threat to them
Legs
  • square with shoulders - professional, restraint, protective stance
  • wide stance, one foot a little back but planted - defensive stance, expecting to receive blows (knees may be unlocked - seen in swordplay and fencing)
  • weight on one leg - relaxed, tired, may also be leaning on something or pair with one ankle tucked behind the other
  • uneven stance - could indicate old injury
  • foot tapping/bouncing - boredom, nervous energy
Whole Body:
  • stiff and still - fear, unease, standing to attention
  • limp or pliant - relaxed, tired, pleased
  • shoulders back/head up - alert, focused, aggressive
  • shoulders forward, hunched - tired, ashamed
  • leaning towards person - interest, intimidation (looming over them), aggression (usually paired with tense arms or hands in fists,)
  • leaning away from person - relaxation, confidence, disgust (recoiling)
  • smooth/fluid movements - joy, confidence, experience
  • stiff motions - fear (reactive, fight or flight), pain (reluctance to move), anger (either fighting to keep control of emotions or lashing out), cold (conservation of heat by keeping limbs near body)
  • cracking joints/stretching - preparing for a fight, often reading as confidence in abilities
  • general rule - close contact/proximity can read as intimidation (paired with tense body - an invasion of personal space) or affection (paired with relaxaed body language, gentle movement) or passion/attraction while distance can read unease/distaste/fear/dislike.
with those in mind, let’s read this scene from Red vs Blue (a personal fav of mine for body language) featuring agent texas from season 8.
Originally posted by cryingmanlytears
So first of all, very relaxed upper body; limp arms held away from the body, which slowly come back to rest on her hips as she looks at what she’s done. Watch how her lean shifts at the end as her center of gravity shifts, and how she has to move her right leg to restabilize herself when she’s finished pushing it. This reads, in order from the start of the loop; detachment (the least amount of her body is involved in the action as possible), relaxation (smooth movements, the deliberation of those little steps backwards) and confidence (hands on hips.) We can tell a ton about this character just in this gif alone, based on her body language.
in summary! this list isn’t exhaustive, but hopefully it gives you some ideas for ways of making characters emote in fics when you can’t see their faces.
some simple (but effective) tips when your skin is not cooperating
hi friends, here are some tips i’ve learned over the years that help me keep my skin in check. feel free to add any tips that have benefitted you :)
  • wash your pillow case! this one can really be overlooked. i change/wash my pillow case once or twice a week, even when i don’t wash my sheets. this really helps makeup and bacteria from building up
  • probiotics. i know some of these supplements can be pricey, but if you can get your hands on some they are magic! i take one everyday. they support healthy gut flora which helps nourish skin, hair, and nails. you can also get probiotics from fermented foods like miso, kimchi, and sauerkraut.
  • vitamin c. so i started taking vitamin c supplements two weeks ago when i was trying to fight off a cold. the next week, i couldn’t believe how much my skin texture had improved. vitamin c is essential for the production of collagen and elastin that keeps skin toned and firm. it also helps regenerate vitamin e in the body (also super good for our skin)!!!
  • eat more foods with vitamin e. foods like avocados, almonds, olives, spinach, peaches, and tomatoes will make your skin v happy.
  • take your makeup off before a workout. i know this one seems so obvious but i honestly just started doing this. normally, i would go to the gym right after class when i still had makeup on. i don’t wear liquid foundation, but i would conceal or powder some areas. recently though, i’ve been going to the gym right when i wake up while my face is nice and clean and i think letting my pores breathe and sweat without the makeup on has helped so much!
  • reduce dairy consumption. for the past week or two, i unconsciously cut out a good majority of the dairy products i typically eat. even though this was unintentional, i began to notice that my skin was looking much more clear. conventional dairy products at the grocery store can contain antibiotics or added hormones that spike insulin in the body, causing breakouts. it can also lead to a rise in oil production that will fuel the breakouts. experimenting to see if this helps your skin could definitely be beneficial!
  • do not touch your face ever ever..never. just don’t touch your face. you may think your hands are clean but better safe than sorry.
  • sanitize your phone. !!!! think about this bc i think a lot of people forget but there is so much bacteria on that thing. clean your phone screen to reduce the bacteria that could come in contact with your face!
Harry and Guitars
I’ve been kind of obsessed with the idea of Harry learning to play the guitar and the thought that maybe after all these years of looking like he’s been learning, perhaps he actually has and we’ll get a taste of it on his solo album! Well, a girl can dream.
In 2011 Harry tweeted this in response to being asked if he played any musical instruments:
So…look at this 16-year old frizzy-haired muppet with his lil pink guitar pretending he knows how to play it. I love him! Don’t give up hope, Harreh!
Hmmm. Louis sure looks cute playing that guitar. Watch closely Harry…
See? Louis showed him a few chords, and let Harry take over.
He might look like a wax figure, but he also looks pretty good holding that guitar! Bonus points for those Keds!
Um….holy shit. Indie band hotness for realz.
Tattoos out, guitar in hand, writing songs by the lake. What more could you ask for?
What a total goober. Channeling his inner rock god.
Here, have a few gifs so you can see how hard he’s been working!
Er…or still acting like a goober.
Taking the guitar on the road.
Nice to see Niall helping out his brudder, giving Hazza some guitar lessons.
So serious.
Well goddamn, he looks good with a bass guitar and a fedora. We even almost got a bit of nip slip there.
I know this is a terrible photo…but come on. Harry in a snap back with a bass guitar. It’s good stuff!
Ah…a favorite of mine. Down on the farm. Kickin it, barefoot. Playing some Kentucky Bluegrass. Or something like that.
Same to you, H. Who’s getting that autographed guitar? How many do you actually have?
These two photos crack me up. For some reason he looks to me like he’s in a Mariachi band. On a boat. With a high ponytail. Classic.
70′s folk musician Harry.
Harry’s album is about to drop. April 7th is around the corner. His SNL appearance not far behind. Will he tour? Will we see him with a guitar on stage? Maybe a slow ballad? Rocking out like David Bowie? I don’t know, but goddamn it, I can’t wait. Solo artist Harry, dramatic hoe music video Harry, 1D reunited Harry, any Harry at all…I hope he’s been composing on his guitar and that we’ll get a peek of guitar playing Harry very, very soon!
Now that presales of Harry’s album have gone up, we got at least one more guitar playing Harry photo, so I’m adding it to my master post!
1980s Duran Duran bass player John Taylor vibe here (albeit with a haircut and less makeup). And if you need further proof of the connection to John Taylor, look here.
