Musical jellies

Raphaël Pluvinage and Marianne Cauvard’s Noisy Jelly project is a game that allows each player to create their own musical instrument out of jelly. The video for the project uses absolutely no sound editing, and needs to be seen and heard to be believed.

Using a mini chemistry lab, each player makes their own set of jellies using water, agar agar powder and a series of molds. The jelly shapes are then placed on the game board, and can be manipulated to create sound. If you, like us, are slightly bewildered about how all this works, there’s some proper science behind it. The game board is a capacitative sensor, and the variations in the shape of the jelly and its salt concentration, as well as the distance and strength of the finger contact, all affect the final sound.

NOISY JELLY!

NOISY JELLY IS A GAME WHERE THE PLAYER

HAS TO COOK AND SHAPE HIS OWN MUSICAL MATERIAL, BASED ON COLOURED JELLY. 

With this noisy chemistry lab, the gamer will create his own jelly with water and a few grams of agar agar powder. After added different color, the mix is then pour in the molds. 10 min later, the jelly shape can then be placed on the game board, and by touching the shape, the gamer will activate different sounds. 

Technically, the game board is a capacitive sensor, and the variations of the shape and their salt concentration, the distance and the strength of the finger contact are detected and transform into an audio signal. Noise Jelly/Jell-O: This is by far one of the coolest things ever. French designers Raphael Pluvinage and Marianne Cauvard have developed a project called Noise Jelly which involves creating a musical instrument out of jelly, or Jell-O, out of agar agar powder, water and colouring. It’s my daughter’s fourth birthday coming up and thanks to Raphaël Pluvinage and Marianne Cauvard, I now know what I’m getting for her. The Noisy Jelly project uses a capacitative sensor as its game board and uses the variations in size and density of the jelly shapes to sculpt the sound produced by your creations. Our home is now complete.
