SO I just watched the movie Dumplin’ on Netflix and LET. ME. TELL. YOU. This is a movie I NEEDED when I was growing up.
FINALLY seeing a big girl plot line where she does not hate her body.
The romantic plot with the “hot guy” (who by the way, is unabashedly in love with her from the very beginning, without her EVER feeling like she needs to change herself for validation) isn’t the main focus of this movie and that is SO FUCKING IMPORTANT. Because validation should NEVER come from a man, but from yourself and absolutely no one else.
It upsets me that I am nearly 24 years old and I have NEVER seen a movie like this. I have never seen a movie where the big girl is the main character and isn’t the butt of every joke, or just the pretty protagonists big, quirky best friend.
If “Dumplin’” doesn’t get the same attention that “The Kissing Booth” and “To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before” did, I will be so disappointed. There needs to be more movies like this, there needs to be more “big girls” portrayed as PEOPLE who are just as capable and worthy of love as anyone else, instead of comic relief.
This movie is just really fucking important, okay.
