McClelland’s Coral Snake - Sinomicrurus macclellandi

Sinomicrurus macclellandi (Elapidae) is a beautiful venomous coral snake native to Southeast Asia. It is a terrestrial, crepuscular, and nocturnal snake which feeds on other snakes.

Like other elapids, it possesses a potent neurotoxic venom, which is capable of killing a person, such as the tragic death of herpetologist Hans Schnurrenberger by a 30 cm Sinomicrurus macclellandi; the initial bite was ignored until neurotoxic symptoms showed up 6 hours later, and death was 8 hours after envenomation.
