A group opposing the Minnesota wolf hunt made themselves very visible Friday night.

The Northwoods Wolf Alliance, a coalition of Anishinaabeg and their allies, was at the Bentleyville Tour of Lights, holding a light show of their own.

They were encouraging sightseers to contact Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton and urge him to end the wolf hunt that is currently happening in the state, as well as demand that another one isn’t held in the future.

“We think all Northern Minnesotans ought to oppose the hunt. We have over a thousand members in our group, and we want it recognized that many Northern Minnesotans oppose the hunt,” said Reyna Crow of the Northwoods Wolf Alliance. “There’s no ecological reason for the hunt. It’s a sport hunt. But wolves are worth more to Northern Minnesotans alive than dead. They drive a great deal of tourism.”

The Minnesota DNR has said that the wolf population is at a point in Minnesota that it can sustain a hunt.

The Northeast Zone in this year’s hunt has already reached it’s limit, but the Northwest and Southeast Zones both remain open.

The group is concerned with recent statements by Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton to the effect that he is not familiar with opposition to the wolf hunt in northern Minnesota. “Our group has almost 1000 members”, says Reyna Crow, founder of the Northwoods Wolf Alliance, which is based in Duluth, “They are appalled at the recreational killing of an iconic animal just off the endangered species list, which is crucial to a healthy eco-system, and of so much cultural importance to the original people of this area.”
