Dutch lighting brand Booo launched its first collection at Spazio Rossana Orlandi during Milan Design Week, wisely commissioning three big names in design - Nacho Carbonell, Front and Studio Formafantasma - to design for them, and making an impression straightaway.
Front’s Surface Tension lamp (pictured right), which uses bubbles as temporary lampshades, was the talk of the fair, while Nacho Carbonell’s squishy rubber lightbulb brings tactility to lighting.
Carwan Gallery will present an exhibition of contemporary design which uses traditional craft techniques from the Middle East next month - and it’s set to be a highlight of Milan design week’s off-fair schedule. Read more about the show, and the line-up announced so far, at Arch Hello.
This lamp was inspired by a trip to the harbor museum in Rotterdam. Rik met two employees of the museum specializing in knotting techniques which are used on a ship. He was fascinated by all those different kinds of objects they knotted, so Rik asked them if they could teach him some techniques – and then knotted for three months to perfect the technique.
The Single Knotted Wire Lamp was made with a single textile coated wire and knotted in a form reflecting its maritime inspiration.
