Why sun sign astrology doesn’t work

Let’s face it: a lot of the time, you won’t relate to your sun sign.

Your sun sign is who you are at your BEST. It’s who you are when you’re in your element, when you’re confident, when you’re in a comfortable situation.

Your sun sign is your identity, but also who you aspire to be. When you think of your sun sign, you think of the qualities that make you special, and make you an individual. It’s probably something you’re proud of. But also, it’s something to live up to; it’s a goal to be the best version of your sun sign that you can possibly be.

The sun sign is extremely important, because it follows you throughout your life in all ways, but it often can’t be pinpointed to specifics like the other placements can. It’s much more broad; it’s always present, but sometimes it’s just out of reach.

People will not always see your sun sign when they first meet you. But close friends will see your sun sign more than anything else, because they see the best in you.

Your RISING sign is who you are all the time, without thinking about it. It’s natural.

Any time you feel threatened, need to put up a front, want to “appear” a certain way…that is your rising sign. Many people don’t consider the rising sign as important as the sun. But in reality, it’s more important.

Some people aren’t even aware of their rising sign. Some people will be surprised when they read the description. But if you ask anyone around you, they will see it immediately. You can’t hide your rising sign, you have to just accept it.

If you meet someone for the first time, that is their rising sign.

Your moon sign won’t be seen by the world at first either, but a lot of times it can be seen more than the sun sign. Your moon sign is your instinctual reactions and ways of living.

Any time you’re upset, you’re happy, you’re jealous, you’re disappointed…these are all times that your moon sign will show. Depending on the sign, of course, it will show in different ways.

Anything to do with the emotions cannot be defined by the sun sign. That is the realm of the moon sign. People wonder why they don’t relate to their sun sign on a lot of different posts - this is why. The moon sign is far more important, because it is your immediate needs and behavior.

People who see through you see your moon sign; people who are able to connect with you emotionally. They have to look deeply enough to get through the wall put up by the rising sign, though.

Mercury is how you get your message across. When you meet someone, there’s a bit of mercury thrown in there too, since they’ll be communicating with you.

Sometimes people will not consider you to be a lot like your sun sign. That’s probably because your mercury is in a different sign than your sun. It’s a bit conflicting, because the words you say are quite different from who you actually are - you might seem more like your mercury sign in some ways.

Mercury is probably the least appreciated and noticed placement in astrology. People always seem to forget about it, but it’s absolutely vital to understanding someone’s personality.

“What is an *insert sign here* like in love?” This is the question that everyone wants to know. Unfortunately, people usually answer it with sun sign. Again.

Venus is your true “love” placement. You might get a sense of what someone is like with their sun sign, but in a relationship you might be surprised when they act so differently. Their idea of romance might be drastically different from their central identity.

Mars is where to look if you want to get an idea of the overall energy someone gives off. Rising sign has a part in this too, but mars is how someone takes action.

Mars, in a sense, is also related to love because it’s how someone does the pursuing. Mars has to do with initiative (and how much of that you take).

Next time you make an astrology post, read an astrology post, or think about astrology in any way, remember this. Most people don’t do their research, and make assumptions that all sun signs are a certain way, and all people will relate to all aspects of their sun sign. This is not the case.

Think to yourself: is this asking about me on a daily basis? My emotions? How I communicate? How I act in love? My impulses?

Chances are, it’s not your sun sign.

how the signs start a conversation

check mercury

aries: boldly ~ aries will come out of nowhere with something to talk about, the conversation will usually be short and quick but full of enthusiasm or new ideas.

taurus: slowly ~ taurus take their time starting conversations mainly because they like to think things over. their practical nature tends to make people listen to them more as a result.

gemini: sporadically ~ much like aries, geminis like to start a conversation randomly and quickly, they often interrupt others because their thoughts are so scattered.

cancer: easily ~ cancers tend to ease into conversations, often beginning with formalities and polite small talk before getting to the main point. they usually are very thoughtful.

leo: loudly ~ regardless of the volume of their voice, a leo’s authority makes it easy for them to be heard. they use creativity and warmth to win the attention of others while also standing out.

virgo: orderly ~ virgos tend to avoid being flashy but still appreciate their intellect being acknowledged. they control conversations by focusing on little details or planning what they have to say.

libra: smoothly ~ libras are diplomatic when it comes to talking and try to please everyone with fair intellect. their charm gets them a large audience but they can seem like a perfectionist with the rants and tangents they go on.

scorpio: urgently ~ scorpios aren’t the most talkative sign but when they want to talk, they try their hardest to get straight to the point. they enjoy observing and discussing more deeper matters.

sagittarius: optimistically ~ they enjoy looking at the big picture and don’t care too much about little details or organization. they tend to have flaws in their arguments due to their scattered thinking, but their enthusiasm can convince many.

capricorn: methodically ~ capricorns tend to start talking slowly, mainly because they need to organize and structure their thoughts. they tend to be skeptical and authoritative.

aquarius: quietly ~ although they enjoy breaking the rules, aquarius tend to quietly slip into conversations without being flashy. they enjoy arguing and often win due to their intellect. this can cause them to push their ideas on others, giving them a subtle authoritative demeanor.

pisces: softly ~ pisces aren’t too concerned with details but will be good listeners. this results in them seamlessly entering conversations with indirect statements or the occasional rambling when they get the chance. they have a tendency to fib in order to avoid offending others.

Entwining Your Dominant Energies

I’ve noticed a lot of people seem to make the mistake as taking only the first dominant sign or planet, but your dominance works more as a rank than it does as one true thing.

Everyone has every sign/planet/element/modality within them. Each sign will have some amount of prevalence in your chart. For this reason, it’s key to look at it as encompassing yourself, rather than defining it as one.

For example, my dominant sign is Aquarius, but this would not be enough to understand or study me. I would also take my next 4: Virgo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Taurus. Then, I could start to study these signs and their archetypes, and see how they can relate to me as a whole.

That’s the key to dominants: it is you as a whole. They work as a flash point, a conclusion, to your chart. Each sign or planet has a certain set of values and characteristics, which when you combine with the other most prominent dominants you have, can act as almost a small biography of who you are.

When thinking of your dominants, it’s key to not take too much or too little. If you have 5 signs all with high percentages, you can use all 5 if you wish, but if you only have 2, then you can just use 2!

To conclude, here’s a list of characteristics which can be used to describe each dominant. If you’re unsure on how many to take away from this, the default amount is usually considered 3 (3 signs, and 3 planets).

Signs:

  • Aries - Passionate, Impulsive, Chaotic
  • Taurus - Stubborn, Routinely, Loving
  • Gemini - Social, Dynamic, Laid Back
  • Cancer - Family oriented, Empathetic, Emotionally tied
  • Leo - Artistic, Extroverted, Dramatic
  • Virgo - Analytical, Precise, Helpful
  • Libra - Loving, Indecisive, Peaceful
  • Scorpio - Investigative, Deep, Intense
  • Sagittarius - Intellectual, Travel-oriented, Unsettled
  • Capricorn - Ambitious, Hard-working, Objective
  • Aquarius - Eccentric, Individual, Humanitarian
  • Pisces - Intuitive, Sympathetic, Romantic

Planets:

  • Sun - Confident, Extroverted, Sure
  • Moon - Emotional, Empathetic, Understanding
  • Mercury - Linguistically wise, Communicative, Social
  • Venus - Aesthetically Inclined, Loving, Musical
  • Mars - Rambunctious, Head strong, Prominent
  • Jupiter - Expansive, Experience-oriented, Unregulated
  • Saturn - Orderly, Specific, System-inclined
  • Uranus - Outspoken, Political, Blunt
  • Neptune - Delusional, Dreamy, Wise
  • Pluto - Ever-changing, Destructive, Revival

Example: Scorpio, Leo, Sagittarius & Mars, Sun, Pluto

“I am investigative and intellectual, I am intense and unsettled. Parts of me are artistic and dramatic. I can be travel-oriented, as well as deep. Amongst these things, I am rambunctious and ever-changing, maybe even head strong and destructive. It is likely you shall see me as confident or sure, even prominent or extroverted. But, I have another side of me which aims for revival.”

Typical Traits of Mercury in the Signs

What style of communication do we use? How do we make decisions? How do we pick up, process, absorb, and exchange information? These questions are answered, in part, by Mercury’s placement by sign of the zodiac. Mercury refines the Sun sign, and it helps to define how we take in and give out information from the world around us.

ARIES:

  • fast decisions, often driven by the need for instant gratification
  • childishly assume that others will accept their opinion smoothly, criticism or negative feedback can be taken personally
  • excellent at promoting their new ideas

TAURUS:

  • rely on their senses when it comes to processing information (smells, noises, and mood)
  • brutally honest. That “say it like it is” style gets mistaken for rudeness and disrespect sometimes
  • when it comes to learning, they prefer demonstrations, concrete answers, and basic concepts

GEMINI:

  • they know a little about everything, though their learning is a little superficial — they generally have too many interests to delve too deeply into any one
  • a nervous energy here is unmistakable
  • able to quickly spot human weaknesses and then play around with them it’s done, usually, with a sense of humour

CANCER:

  • very subjective and personal (if Sun in Gemini or Leo they may come across as more sensitive than they actually are)
  • fast at forming opinions and making decisions on first impressions
  • best listeners of all the signs

LEO:

  • they speak with authority, some come across as know-it-alls
  • very attached to their opinions, taking pride in their beliefs, which are often rather idealistic, desire for self-expression
  • with intellect and ego so closely tied, the ability to separate fact from fiction can be complicated

VIRGO:

  • adept at organising, planning on a short-term scale, and doing errands
  • capable of learning a lot
  • rarely flashy in their communication style, but they do appreciate it when others acknowledge their brainpower

LIBRA:

  • very diplomatic,  long for equality in the intellectual world
  • trying too hard to score intellectual points instead of truly listening to people, which often comes across as self-centered
  • extraordinarily uncomfortable with extremes of opinions

SCORPIO:

  • tendency to focus on the false in order to get to the truth
  • very distrusting towards strangers’ opinions, therefore observant and wary
  • absolutely driven to win every argument, which they usually reach with the help of destructive criticism, sarcasm and manipulation

SAGITTARIUS:

  • communicate in an optimistic, forward-looking manner, their ideas are generally very big, not focused on details
  • restless intellect, they learn best when they are given the freedom to think for themselves
  • they’ll be the first to spot bias or prejudice in everyone else’s communication, but they can be a little blind to their own

CAPRICORN:

  • easily get frustrated when too much information is thrown at them at once, tend to close themselves off
  • don’t appreciate being taken off guard, and they quickly become impatient with people who don’t honour their word
  • ability to listen carefully and to choose their words wisely

AQUARIUS:

  • enjoy breaking the rules, even though they aren’t necessarily loud or flamboyant people
  • their perspective on issues can be delightfully unusual, quirky, and surprisingly insightful
  • always express their opinions, speak up for themselves, sometimes in a quite detached and even impolite way

PISCES:

  • an unpredictable way to communicate, you never know when they’ll be in a quiet mood or a yakking state
  • dreamy and indirect, it’s easy to adapt them to anyone’s belief or decision, they are an easy target
  • they instinctively express what others want to hear to make them feel comfortable, which often comes across as lies

All the water and air signs are psychoanalytical in their own ways.

Cancer wants to know your needs. Cancer searches for your inner child & the organic composition of your ability to experience life on an emotional level, and they do this through stimulation of memory and ignition of feelings.

Scorpio wants to know your secrets. Scorpio searches for your inner demons & the organic composition of your ability to experience life on a psychological level, and they do this through observation, probing, and deconstruction.

Pisces wants to know your pain. Pisces searches for your inner saint & the organic composition of your ability to experience life on a spiritual level, and they do this through psychic absorption, availability, and inviting catharsis.

Gemini wants to know your thoughts. Gemini searches for your inner dreamer & the organic composition of your ability to experience life on an intellectual level, and they do this through conversation and appealing to curiosity.

Libra wants to know your opposite. Libra searches for your inner balance & the organic composition of your ability to experience life on an interpersonal level, and they do this through reflection, comparison, and becoming you for a while.

Aquarius wants to know your future. Aquarius searches for your inner rebel & the organic composition of your ability to experience life on a larger scale, and they do this through inspiring you to express/fulfill your ideals and purpose.

The water signs mainly wait, attract, and spy, whereas the air signs encourage, initiate, and ask. The water signs receive you, the air signs pursue you. When these signs get to know you, they aren’t just learning dead-end details and essence, they’re becoming familiar with exactly what defines you, exactly what makes you tick, exactly what completes you, exactly what & who you are. What they do with that information varies.

What’s Up for March 2017?

What’s Up for March? The moon hides red star Aldebaran and crescents dazzle after dusk.

On March 4 the first quarter moon passes between Earth and the star Aldebaran, temporarily blocking our view of the star. This is called an occultation.

The occultation begins and concludes at different times, depending on where you are when you view it.

The event should be easy to see from most of the U.S., Mexico, most of Central America, the Western Caribbean and Bermuda.

Observers along a narrow path from Vancouver, British Columbia, to Hartford, Connecticut, will see the moon “graze” the star. The star will disappear and reappear repeatedly as hills and valleys on the moon alternately obscure and reveal it.

As seen from Earth, both Mercury and Venus have phases like our moon. That’s because they circle the sun inside Earth’s orbit.

Planets that orbit between Earth and the sun are known as inner or inferior planets.

Inferior planets can never be at “opposition,” which is when the planet and the sun are on opposite sides of Earth.

But inferior planets can be at “conjunction,” which is when a planet, the sun and Earth are all in a straight line.

Conjunction can happen once when the planet is on the opposite side of the sun from Earth and again when it’s on the same side of the sun as Earth.

When a planet is on the opposite side of the sun from Earth, we say it is at “superior conjunction.” As the planet moves out from behind the sun and gets closer to Earth, we see less and less of the lit side. We see phases, similar to our moon’s phases.

Mercury is at superior conjunction on March 6.

A few weeks later, the planet emerges from behind the sun and we can once again observe it. By the end of March we’ll see a last-quarter Mercury.

On April 20 Mercury reaches “inferior conjunction.”

Brilliant Venus is also racing toward its own inferior conjunction on March 25. Watch its crescent get thinner and thinner as the planet’s size appears larger and larger, because it is getting closer to Earth.

Finally, look for Jupiter to rise in the East. It will be visible all month long from late evening until dawn.
