Pacific Rim 2 Guillermo del Toro Speakes to Collider

Guillermo del Toro, Kaiju and Jaegers with Pacific Rim 2. Speaking with Collider, del Toro was asked about the sequel and revealed some new details on where we will find the world and its characters.

“It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.”

Del Toro went on to reveal that Charlie Day and Burn Gorman’s characters will return for the sequel and that fans will be getting more of the “science” of the world.

“You’re gonna get a lot of that,” he said, “but the Kaijus are very different and you’re gonna see a very different type of the robots I think. It’s gonna be quite a different adventure.”

Reasons I’m not at all bummed about Pacific Rim 2 having a new director:

  • It’ll allow Del Toro to focus on other projects as a director without being tied down to a franchise (one that’s on life support, at that). And while Del Toro is notorious for having plenty of false starts during his career, I think handing over the reigns of Pacific Rim 2 will really allow him to focus his career and carefully select what he wants to tackle next.
  • I don’t feel like the world of Pacific Rim is one that only exclusively Guillermo Del Toro can successfully bring to the screen. While Del Toro is undoubtedly a much more competent filmmaker than George Lucas (and that Steven S. DeKnight is no Irvin Kershner), it’s always important to remember Lucas never directed The Empire Strikes Back.
  • I understand people are concerned about DeKnight’s lack of theatrical directing credits, but the guy’s body of work on TV so far is undoubtedly solid, and has attracted plenty of critical acclaim.
  • Speaking of The Empire Strikes Back and DeKnight’s TV career thus far, I feel like we might be in for something of a darker sequel - both tonally and visually - which is fine by me. Follow the example set by Star Wars and the conclusion of the first film - the destruction of the Death Star/closure of the Breach is a significant and important victory, but the threat is still looming and possibly stronger than ever.
  • DeKnight tweeted soon after the announcement that he grew up on Ultraman, Johnny Sokko and his Flying Robot, and Space Giants.
  • Most of all, Del Toro not only trusts DeKnight to take over the franchise and do a good job, but seems enthusiastic about his appointment. That’s reassurance enough for me.

Overall, I think this announcement is good news, and I’m very optimistic about what DeKnight can bring to the sequel. Let’s at least see what the guy can bring to the table before we start begging for Del Toro to come back.

Pacific Rim sequel is still on the way

There’s some very good news today for fans of Guillermo del Toro‘s epic Kaiju showdown, Pacific Rim. Last month, it was reported that the Pacific Rim sequel had been removed from Legendary‘s schedule of upcoming films. Today, Universal Pictures has clarified the change with an official statement.

“Legendary’s ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ originally scheduled for release on August 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time,” it reads. “The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having ‘Pacific Rim 2,’ the sequel to 2013’s ‘Pacific Rim,’ which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of ‘Pacific Rim’ so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

Taking the place of the Pacific Rim sequel will be Pitch Perfect 3, originally planned for release on July 21, 2017. Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson are already confirmed to headline the returning cast with writer Kay Cannon returning to the team to pen the next chapter.

Universal Pictures Removes ‘Pacific Rim 2′ Release Date from Its Calendar

We recently reported that pre-production on Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2 had been halted due to turbulence between Legendary Pictures and Universal Pictures. The latter studio, which is currently the distributor for the sequel, confirmed the film’s removal from its release date calendar in a press release today. Rather than addressing the behind-the-scenes bean-counting that led to Pacific Rim 2 being shelved for the moment, Universal says that they’ve delayed the production and release of the film in order to provide a bigger and better experience for fans.

Here’s Universal’s exact wording on the reason behind the delay of Pacific Rim 2:

Legendary’s PACIFIC RIM 2, originally scheduled for release on August 4, 2017, will be redated at a later time.  The filmmakers, Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having PACIFIC RIM 2, the sequel to 2013’s PACIFIC RIM, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully-immersive experience that the franchise deserves.  To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of PACIFIC RIM 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.

PACIFIC RIM 2 is the follow-up to Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 epic action-adventure, with a script penned by del Toro, Jon Spaihts (Passengers, Prometheus) and Travis Beacham.  Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D and IMAX.

While that certainly sounds promising, keep in mind that it’s in Universal and Legendary’s best interests to keep a hopeful outlook for the picture, especially since it remains an international hit with franchise potential.
