The Girls’ Soccer Team That Joined a Boys’ League, and Won It
AEM Lleida recently conquered 13 boys’ teams in a junior regional league in Spain, where women’s soccer remains mostly a sideshow.

“It’s really been more a problem for parents rather than their boys,” Salmerón said of comments directed at the team during matches. “It’s strange, but most of the macho comments and insults have come from the mothers of some of the boys we play.”

A girls’ soccer team joined the boys’ league and won the regional championship

  • Perhaps it’s time to rethink gender segregation in sports.
  • After realizing a single girls’ team was consistently dominating their league, Sergio González, president of amateur soccer club AEM Lleida in Spain, decided to register the team for the boys’ league in 2014.
  • And in 2017, they beat out 13 boys’ teams to claim the junior regional league championship. Read more (5/12/17)

Waking up in a 500+ year old villa is a very different experience.

The lack of air conditioning isn’t as big of a problem as you’d think - the benefit of the stone construction means the outside stays hot but the inside stays cool. Leaving the windows open for nonstop ventilation and an “open concept” feel was fantastic.

It was kinda crazy - we finally made it… and I know I’ve said that before, but just thinking of the fact that our entire family had arrived on another continent, on separate occasions, and have all congregated in one spot to celebrate my brothers wedding, it blew my mind.

I was so happy to see everyone and be all in one spot… in another country… yet feeling like home.

The villa was incredible. They renovated everything to make it functional for modern guests, yet they kept the original portions of the house virtually untouched. The old kitchen, winery (equipped with massive massive barrels), and ‘den’… all with original equipment.

The farmhouse served as a winery for many years, and the stone grape-grinding rig is outside on the ‘front porch’.

This was quite a building. I’m glad we got to sleep here for several nights.

It was getting dark, but as we drove up the side of the hill Kaila & I looked to the left to see the valley lit up purple and orange. This isn’t some fancy photoshop filter. This is actually what we saw with our own eyes.

One last view along the winding road over the hill and toward the villa.
