Canadians in California: Grimes, Joni Mitchell, and the female pop auteur

I’ve been thinking a lot about Grimes lately, especially her song “California.” It’s defs one of my fav songs of the year and Art Angels, in all its messy glory, is also one of my fav records of the year. The first time I heard “California” though I immediately thought of a song by another Canadian artist who also uprooted herself and moved to LA: Joni Mitchell’s “California” off of 1971’s Blue
