Brazil airport workers declare partial strike for first day of World Cup

AFP: Ground staff at three major airports in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will stage a 24-hour partial protest on the opening day of World Cup, their union said on Wednesday.

The workers promised to maintain 80 percent of service on Thursday, but the partial work stoppage raises fears of delays as fans flood the city for the tournament’s opening matches.

The workers have been seeking raises and special bonuses tied to the World Cup for months.

The Juscelino Kubitschek Bridge is a steel and concrete structure that crosses Lake Paranoá in Brasília, Brazil. The main span has four supporting pillars submerged underwater, while the deck weight is supported by three 200-foot-tall (61 m) asymmetrical steel arches that crisscross diagonally over the bridge.
