Julius-LeBlanc-Stewart

Disappointment (1882). Julius LeBlanc Stewart (American, 1855-1919). Commonly believed to be another Sarah Bernhardt painting.

The envelope is on the floor. The letter floats down after being dropped by the lady who took up a rose instead. Her face shows her disappointment as the letter’s contents have not satisfied her expectations or hopes. Perhaps a gentleman has broken off a previous arrangement.
