Dee David, one of the victims in the Mickey Cohen ambush, primps in the Queen of Angels hospital while recovering slowly from gunshot wounds, July 22, 1949. Ms. David, a film extra who was part of Cohen’s party at the popular Sunset Strip restaurant Sherry’s, was shot three times in the ambush.
Also wounded in the attack was Special Agent Harry Cooper, of the California Department of Justice, who had been assigned to guard Mickey Cohen that night. Agent Cooper and Ms. David, introduced the night of the ambush, married the next year.
Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel
A poor Jewish boy who later rose to power through his involvement with theGenovese Crime Family, Bugsy Siegel was a brutal killer and a smart businessman. He headed several bootlegging and racketeering operations, and became a key participant in the development of Las Vegas. On June 20, 1947,Siegel was killed while at the Beverly Hills home of his girlfriend, Virginia Hill. He was shot through the window with a .30-caliber military M1 carbine. His killer was never positively identified and no one was charged with the murder.
Zelig Harry Lefkowitz, aka ’Big Jack’ Zelig, was born in New York City (May 13, 1888 – October 5, 1912). He began his life of crime as a pickpocket at the age of 6. Eventually he joined the Eastman Gang and lent out his talent for violence for a fee.
