Recollected Memories | Jackson Patterson | Via

Through photomontage I continue my exploration of the narrative that emerges between subject and space and time. The work reflects various photographs that I have taken merged with others from my family’s albums.

I find myself inspired by the stories that come into focus when we collocate the medium of photography with 21st century technological practices, the cultural influence of our country’s migration west, and the personal history of family.

Each blended piece possesses its own original story, in addition to the one the viewer takes away.

Author about the project: In the latest series, Recollected Memories, I was inspired by the tales of my families westward migration and am merging the landscapes of the American West with my family albums, attempting to collocate the medium of photography, 21st century digital practices, with the personal. The results that come into focus are new fantastical stories. Each blended piece possesses its own original story while the viewer takes away another version that is his or her own. They are stories of perseverance, pride, struggle, life and death. They are human stories intertwined in a majestic landscape.

A number of miles north of Jackson, WY is a huge open field with all these horses. More times than not they’ll be out there when you drive by. With this kind of back drop, it’s a must stop location. And stop we will again this fall. Hope to see you there. My favorite photograph series right now is Jackson Patterson’s “Recollected Memories.” I find every one of these photomontages so calming and interesting. This series is quite inspiring, mainly because of the way he combined family photographs with others he personally shot so perfectly with such a masterful acknowledgement of every line and the interaction of space.
