on the one hand I love that topology is so concise with its notation and language on the other hand it makes it entirely impenetrable to anyone not in the know what this says is that if you have a hairy ball you can't comb it flat without cowlicks or tufts that's it it also says that you can't comb it in any even-dimensional space oh right spheres in 3D? actually 2 dimensional ~*~mathematics~*~ it's because the points of a sphere i.e. the surface of a sphere not its interior can be completely covered by two coördinates rather than three what we would call a 3-dimensional sphere is actually only possible in 4 dimensional space because technically a sphere is a quotient map of a disk explanation of that last tag: take a disk (i.e. a circle and its interior) glue its boundary to itself this reduces the boundary circle to a single point that's a sphere that would be written in Topologese as D²/∂D² = S² or something similar as I said almost obscenely concise topology
