I appreciate them so much as a reader because they help me visualize

hi i have something to say about this discussion about our fandom content and i hope this somehow helps to generate more ideas about what we can do about it.

let me begin pointing out two facts. 1. it is true that gif sets get more attention (likes, reblogs, comments, interaction in general) than fics, and sometimes, than fan art. (and it is just true, a fact, something that exists and happens and there is no hidden implication behind this sentence, i promise) 2. it is true that, usually, fic writers invest a lot more of time working on fics than gif makers on gifs. making gifs is not easy and a single set could take days to finish, the same way some fics could be written in a day and others could take months or even years. these are just facts and i think none of them implies gif makers or other content creators deserve less validation for their work. this is not a competition to decide who deserves or not validation, this conversation is important because it points out a lack of balance, an inequality we have to work on if we really appreciate the work fic writers do, that’s all. nowadays most websites prioritize visual content (gif, photos, videos, content that can be produced and consumed very fast in general) than written content, and yeah that sucks, but this is what we have now and we have to work with it, and if we really appreciate the work of fic writers, we must find a way to fix this. we can’t let their hard work being ignored, that’s not fair.

which really prompted me to write this was i saw some people asking “yeah but what we can do about it?” first, i think nobody has said that stop making popular content (like gifs) is the solution, it will never being a solution. gif makers are the ones that make phandom trend on this site every day, every week after all. anyway, maybe the obvious answer is reading, commenting and sharing, but again, that’s not enough because algorithm. actually, the solution is exposure. now, again, what we can do? let me give you an example. i think i have never* seen a gif set inspired or based on a fic, at least not in this fandom, maybe mood boards, but definitely i have never saw gif sets or edits (*i’m not saying those doesn’t exist, but i have never saw one, they have never showed up in my dash. i follow a lot of artists, gif makers and video editors, so it seems like it is not a common thing anyway, and that’s exactly what we need to build: new habits) or gif edits based on someone else’s art (you know, pretty sure most artists would be very happy if you make gifs and edits based on their work, as long as you ask them first and credit them of course). and in a similar way, i very, very rarely have read fics based on art, gif sets or edits (events like the phandom reverse bang clearly want to change that, but again, it’s not a common thing). and this only shows it exists a huge lack of collaboration between creators in our fandom.

talking from my experience, in the last few months i have focus on making art for fanfic and let me tell you the data i have got is actually shocking. only on twitter, my phandom big bang projects (#spon) got an average of 350 link clicks each one. what does this mean? it means an average of 350 people came to know about the fic thanks to the art i made (and i’m not even a popular account). maybe these are not impressive numbers but for a fic writer it surely means a lot. 350 extra people came to know about their fic. 350 extra potential readers. and that was only on twitter, here on tumblr my art posts got much more attention than the original authors’ post, which is sad, but at least more people came to know about the fic because of it.

so that’s it, we can make a difference if we are willing to collaborate. i think we all agree all content creators are important, so if we really appreciate other people’s work, please let’s give them the validation they deserve, let’s give them a little bit of our time. it would be nice <3

phazerstorm  asked:

I just adore your art style, it's so cute! I'm thinking of making comics myself. Do you think you could give me some tips on angling or facial expressions or overall detail?

Thank you so so much! I really appreciate that! Like, a whole lot. ^^

I’m not exactly sure how much I’ll be able to help you, though I can at least give you some pointers on expressions! I’ll do my best. I’m sorry this is coming a bit late!

I’m going to use Bendy for my examples, just because he’s super easy to draw and I have him on hand/mind at the moment. But! These can be used on just about anyone.

Keep in mind: this is just my way of doing things. There isn’t one “set” way to create great art! There’s a lot of experimenting, testing and growing when it comes to artwork.

When it comes down to expressions, there are a few things to consider: what are they feeling? How intense is this feeling? How far can, or should you push it? How can you make this feel realistic? In visual storytelling, showing what a character is going through is far more important than telling the reader. In a comic setting, there’s a very fine balance–since you have images to go with the words, but you can’t convey each minute action… At least in a reasonable amount of panels, the dialogue and the images have to work together when they’re used in tandem.

When a character is shouting, you have to push their expression further–it won’t be enough to show them with their mouth slightly open, or with a flat face. Give them wide eyes, or shut their eyes completely with frustration. Open their mouth wide, maybe even get their body language involved if you have enough room. Throw their arms in the air, have them pulling at their hair!

Likewise, if what they’re saying is quiet or somber, soften their expression. Have their gaze ill-focused, or looking to the ground. Their shoulders could be slumped, their brow could be low. Their mouth could be almost, or entirely closed. Or are they happy? Raise their eyebrows, widen their eyes with joy! Bring out that smile! Use as much variety and as many shapes as you can!

Because I’m a visual person, here are a few examples to give you a better idea of what I mean:

(I’m sorry if my handwriting is hard to read)

Which facial expressions are more interesting? Sure, the ones on the left are going through the motions of emoting, but the ones to the right REALLY show how the character is feeling!

Body language is also immensely important when it comes down to expressiveness. Every part of the body can be used to convey a message. The crossing of arms can indicate disgust, or even put a small barrier between two people. Slumped shoulders show disappointment or sadness. Every little movement a character makes can have a massive impact on their overall tone. Here are a few examples like the above:

Even minute changes to a static pose can make a BIG difference! Test around and see what works best.

I’ve noticed that some animators have mirrors near their desk. This is so they can look up at their reflection and make a face into the mirror. They project their character’s feelings onto themselves, that way they can see what sort of facial expression would be best suited to that emotion. Nowadays we can just google this, but it’s still a good idea. Don’t be afraid to look up references whenever you need them. I know I do frequently! There’s no shame in using references!

My friend linked me to this wonderful guide, which goes more in-depth than I did here. Take a look!

I’m sorry I can’t help you quite as much with angles. I feel that I’d need to do a little more research in order to be able to articulate this more fluently. Perhaps some other time I can try and revisit this and go more into depth about perspective and foreshortening, but for now, here’s another great guide that might help you along in the right direction. I use a similar structure for my own drawings!

Speaking of foreshortening, here’s another tutorial! I don’t use this particular method, but it may work for you!

I know you didn’t ask for it, but I’d like to give you some tips about comic making. If you don’t want them, then I guess you can just stop reading, pfff. Either way I’ll put it under a cut so this post doesn’t take up so much of the dashboard.

How Far I’ll Go

A/N: I AM SO HYPE FOR THIS FIC. I have been walking back and forth from classes listening to this song thinking about how this can translate into an amazing sister winchester fic.. It is a much better visualization in my head, I’m not that great at expressing what I imagine into words… Feedback is appreciated! I hope you enjoy! Also it is highly highly recommended if you haven’t heard “How Far I’ll Go” from Moana to listen to it before reading this fic because it shares the same theme as the song. I added the lyrics in (even though I told myself I wouldn’t) because I think that it helps you to understand my train of thought better and what part of the song I am making the connection to. This is AU ish in that obviously Sam and Dean have a younger sister, but also that Sam never went to Stanford/never wanted to go to Stanford, he always wanted to be a hunter. Also John didn’t/hasn’t yet disappeared.

Characters: Sister!Reader, Dean, Sam, John

Getting the most out of tumblr

With 1DFF being down and out of business (whether that’s forever or not is still unclear), tumblr seems to be the prime place for all our favourite fanfictions to be posted. There’s nothing wrong with tumblr at all, I very much like tumblr myself, but sometimes we, as authors, want to get the very best we can out of it – and so, yes, that includes how to reach a wider audience to help boost our stories. Of course we write for ourselves and all that jazz, but there’s just something nice about having someone appreciate all the hard work you put into something, am I right?

So, with all this in mind, I’ve put together a little list of things I’ve learnt over the years when it comes to tumblr and posting my own fics on tumblr.

You’re the Celebration Tonight

Genre: Extreme fluff (as asked)

Pairing: JK x Reader

Words: 2068

A/N: This was funny because I couldn’t stop thinking about it ever since I got the ask :D So here it is finally RIPIP. Requests are open!

“No, don’t go”

“But I have to, I must.”

“Does it have to be this way?”

“I’m afraid it must. This is my purpose in life and death.”

“Do you really have to go? I love you…” He said, his chin tucked into his neck so his voice came out deep, serious and sombre

“But I have to go. We knew we wouldn’t ever be able to be together… You must let me go.” He raised his neck and spoke in a comically high voice

Switching back to tucking his chin in, he speaks again, “It doesn’t have to be this way… Just run away with me and everything will be fine. Nobody will even realise we’re gone.” He spoke with a pleading voice, clearing his throat midway, before his head moved backwards to stretch his neck. His veins peeked out as his voice rose even higher as he mock-screamed, “But it is my duty, please understand! Let me go, this is impossible!”

I Thought You Were Different: Book 4 (Part 34/?) (Avengers x reader)

Part 33

“You’re gonna have to tell me how this isn’t bad, Nick,” you snapped, “because all that I can see here is how you manipulated everyone to get your way!  Again!”

“I did this because they needed the push, and he needed to step away. ”

“Oh, I’ll give you a push.  I’ll push you off the goddamn roof!”

A note on Ikemen Sengoku

Dear gods help me, I started a mobile otome.

So what is this?

It’s an otome of sorts. A visual novel game where your character gets sent back in time to date a bunch of Warring States period warlords.
Who are all bishi ‘ikemen’, because of course they are.

That sounds dumb?

The story is actually surprisingly nice? I haven’t gotten too far into it, but it’s very over the top and I very much appreciate it. It’s written almost exactly like a really good reader insert fanfic.
The mc is, through some convoluted happen-stance, sent back 500 years in time, where she immediately messes up the time line by saving Nobunaga friggin Oda from an assassination plot.
Turns out all the big shots are still alive, because she’s not the only one messing with timelines. So you get your pick of Sanada, Date, Tokugawa and Oda, and probably some others later.
For the record, this is like the first 'normal’ otome I’ve tried, the others I played so far are Hatoful Boyfriend (the one with the pigeons) Dream Daddy (which is super funny) and Amnesia: Memories (which is…. traumatising). So the storylines in this one may be classic for old hats at otome, but I really rather like them. The dudes are also remarkably unrapey so far, which after Amnesia is a Thing I Look Out For (that game was a Mistake, ok?).

The mc

If you’re the type to self-project, these kind of games can really fail by having the mc be a soggy noodle (hello, Amnesia: Memories), but I actually really like the mc in this one. She is spunky AF and deals with the whole time travel thing with admirable calmness. It probably helps that she gets to be a princess, but still.

The men

I am starting to come to grips with the fact that I appear to have a Type™, and that the world is on to this fact.
I will also readily admit that I downloaded the game about two minutes after I accidentally hit on a single picture while googling.

This picture.

So let’s talk about Masamune Date, shall we?

Dude has an eyepatch (Ding!), dude has a cocky smile (ding ding), dude has a bunch of katana and I apparently have a sword fetish (I should have realized this playing all the Dynasty Warrior stuff).

Dude uses 'kitten’ as a term of endearment (holy friggin heck DING).
He’s a little shit and I’m so on board with this dude.

Let’s also talk about Nobunaga friggin Oda

This man is, by most accounts, a horrific historical tyrant. But you know what? He does the thing.

The thing with the smirk. I call this the Aomine Smile™.
I am weak for this.

The game

Since this is a mobile game that is freemium, it does come with its set of issues.
One: you get five very short chapters per day (unless you pay).
Two: there’s a bunch of typical mobile game stuff, like playing dress up and registering friends and pushing a button every day to make points go up that you will need later (unless, again, you pay).

I would honestly prefer to just pay like five bucks and get to play the game through, but as it is, it’s mostly an exercise in self discipline.
Also, it’s pretty slow, even on a fairly high end phone.

So while I’m not fully on board with the actual game mechanics, I do rather enjoy the story writing enough to at least see how far I can make it into this.
Also: have you seen the eye patch on that dude? How can I say no to that?

chrmdpoet  asked:

Hi angstbot! Here is the ask I told you about. I appreciate you being able to write up an answer to help out one of my askers. The one I came up with was rather rambly! "I saw your response to that guy who wanted to write a Clexa fic and you talked about the "male gaze". I've read many explanations of this term, but for the life of me, I still can't distinguish lesbian sexuality (as shown in art, lit, non-porn movies) written by men versus those written by women." (1/2)

“I’ve read Clexa works created by women that make me blush like crazy and appear no less objectifying, lascivious, or explicit. Is there some rule of thumb I’m missing here? I’m a straight woman, FWIW.” (2/2)

so the term “male gaze” originates in a piece of feminist film theory from 1974 called Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema, by Laura Mulvey. and it’s … VERY 1974. Mulvey’s interested in the ways women appear on film as “to be looked at” while men are a) not treated as consumable in that way and b) appeared on film as the person doing the looking.

what she was talking about here was classical Hollywood cinema, like Hitchcock. it’s not as overt anymore usually. BUT, if you want a more contemporary example, male gaze is Amazons in Justice League vs. Wonder Woman.

Wonder Woman Amazons are still exposing skin, but the representation is from the perspective of what it’s like to be that woman in that body–they need protection for their bodies so they don’t die in battle. Justice League Amazons are represented from the perspective of somebody who wants to look at them with little concern about what it’s like to be that person in that body.

this is the crux of the “male gaze” question–you can have sexiness without objectification. the Amazons on the left are sexy and nice to look at, but not at the expense of themselves. on the right, not so much.

BUT because Mulvey was VERY second wave feminist, she thought it was an essential quality of maleness rather than a position that different people can potentially occupy (though men are socialized such that they do it more). so fic that doesn’t convey the interiority of the people having sex, and their enjoyment, and is just about the external pleasure of consuming it voyeuristically as a reader? that’s “male gaze” style no matter who is writing it.

fic that is wildly explicit, raunchy, kinky, etc. but is concerned with the subjectivity and pleasure of the characters? not gaze. even if men write it. but on average they don’t.

hope that helps.

The Ten Books I’d Bring to a Desert Island

You walked into Rip’s office with Len later. You smiled at Ray walked over embracing you tightly, “Oh my…hello Ray.”

“I was so worried…please do not demolecularize again.” He smiled at you.

You laughed a little, “I will make sure to not do that again.”

Len stepped up next to you as Stein came over taking your hands in his, “You will have to explain what happened after we get you stabilized.”

“Right…everyone keeps throwing the word grounded around.” You looked at him, “Like I’m going to fly away.”

“Grounded, anchored, stabilize…the word doesn’t matter.” Len looked at you as took your hand, “What matters is doing it and doing it fast.”

“We’ve been working on it since we found out you were alive.” Rip looked at you from across the table, “Any input you might have would be appreciated.”

You stepped over to the table, “Shouldn’t we be focusing on Savage?”

Rip glanced at Len, “We have a destination planned…but for right now…you are our focus.”

“Thank you.” You said quietly, “I appreciate it…”

“You’re part of our crew Y/N.” Rip told you, “We don’t leave people behind.”

You nodded swiping information over on the table, “So…anchoring…its good word. It was like being dragged away by strong rip tide. If you fought it just made it worse.”

“We all have working theories.” Stein told you, “Mr. Snart provided us with his memories and research and we went from there. We’d like to start by keeping you close to him, as it appeared you were only in his timeline.”

“You’re correct in your assumption.” You told them glancing over their research, “It was always Len…I was always close by to him. Hundred yards, maybe a little more… except at the bank.” You looked at him, “I waited hours that day.”

He tilted his head trying to recall. It was hard because the memories started to blend together. Even his eidetic memory didn’t help much. He had two visuals and both were real, “I remember preparing at home…then walking to the bank.”

“Home wasn’t nearby?” You asked him still looking at the research.

“No. Good fifteen blocks.” He told you glancing at Stein writing things down.

“What was different?” You muttered to yourself.

“I was running late that morning.” He got an image of the clock next to his bed, “It set me back. I guess the power went out or something. Maybe it accounted for that…for when I wanted to be there versus when I was actually there.”

“It?” Ray looked at him.

“Time.” Len looked at him, “It’s a living thing isn’t it?”

“That’s very astute of you.” Stein looked at him surprised.

You watched Len’s eyes narrow on him, “I’ve been reading up on time for nearly fifteen years because I have a time traveling girlfriend. Yeah I think I’m pretty astute.”

“I meant no disrespect…” You stared at Len as Martin tried to defend himself. Girlfriend…he said girlfriend. You’d never been a girlfriend before.

“Start at the beginning…” Rip looked at you once Stein finished up, “What happened in the chamber?”

You sighed shutting your eyes, “It was like be rewritten. As I got closer to the core, climbing over the containment tubes to the center…I thought it was heat burning me away.”

“Thought?” Ray smiled leaning on his hands listening.

“Yeah…boiling away…but I don’t think that’s what was going on. I mean it hurt like a bitch…but…” You struggled to find the words. You sighed, “It’s like Len said. Time is a live and I think it was figuring out what to do with me. When I got to the breach…it was like a root attached a wall. When I started fixing the problem by pushing it back in place it detached but…”

“But it attached to you instead.” Len looked at you, “That scar on your leg.”

“Wait…the core touched you?” Rip walked over, “Show me…”

“Whoa there…” Len raised his hand protectively, “Just slow your roll…”

“Len it’s fine.” You pushed his arm down, “They need to see it.”

They all followed you over a chair where you hiked up your pant leg. The long red scar twisted around your leg up the calf, “It seems to grow every time I…jump.”

“Fascinating…” Stein reached out to touch your leg but stopped looking up to you, “May I?”

“Yes.” You smiled at him as he took your leg gently into his warm hands.

“I don’t feel like scar tissue.” He expressed, “It’s more like a mark. We should take you to the med bay to run some tests.”

“Good idea, Dr. Palmer and I will remain here and continue our work.” Rip walked back toward the table, “I’m sure Mr. Snart will be more then capable to assist you.”

“Gee thanks, for that enthused vote of confidence.” Len glared at him as he helped you up. He and Rip had come to a slight understanding since you’d left. He still didn’t care for his attitude though.

“We’ll get to the bottom of this.” Stein smiled at you, “We’re not losing anyone else.”

You watched him take off for the med bay to set everything up. You glanced at Len walking with you, “So…girlfriend, huh?”

He smirked a little, “You caught that, did you?”

“Yeah.” You smiled a little.

“I’ve liked you since I was a boy. It seemed fitting now.” He looked at you with a small smile, “Of course if you’re not okay with that…we can…not…have labels.”

“No…” You shook your head smiling taking his hand in yours, “Labels are good. Labels help people…and keep aware.”

“Right…of course…because everyone needs to be aware that we’re together.” He squeezed your hand, “Listen…I have something for you…”

“You do?” You stopped with him just outside the med bay.

“It’s stupid…really…” He sighed, “It was just after…you left the last time in Central City…I may have gone off on a small bender as it was the holidays and I was…alone. I got my change from my…I forget how many drink…there was a quarter.”

He pulled out the beaten up plastic ring from his pocket. Your eyes got a little wider, “Len?”

“Don’t think that this is…something special.” He told you putting it on your middle finger, “I’m not a marriage kind of guy…but I am loyal. This…little trinket is just to say that for as long as we’re together, I’m together with you alone.”

You smiled a little looking at it, “It’s perfect.”

“I was going to steal Jacqueline Kennedy’s ring for you, but I got a bit a busy.” He smirked walking inside with you.

“I think I like the quarter machine one better.” You told him looking at it, “Simple…I work with my hands so I won’t worry about breaking it…yes much more practical.”

He smirked helping you up onto the bed as Stein walked over with a data pad, “We’ll begin with a full body scan. Please lay back.”

LeafyIsHere Fanfiction - Hotel Celebration

Leafy had just hit three million subscribers and you decided to go out as a celebration. You had planned a pleasant dinner at a hotel and got a nice room there as well. You wanted to celebrate his success and invited some of his friends to join in as well. He had stated earlier in the week he wasn’t planning on doing anything special for the 3 million hit, but you had convinced him otherwise.

You had managed to reserve an entire restaurant to host the party and were pleasantly surprised by how many people were willing to help or even RSVP’d. Despite Leafy being a huge cyberbully, people really envied his ability to say what everyone was already thinking. By the time Leafy had arrived, there were already a variety of people there. The music was great, mostly playing rap, electronic, and positive vibes– of course. You greeted him right away, saying, “Hey! You finally got here! Everyone’s super excited to congratulate you.” His face is still a little shocked at everything, “Y/N, did you really set all of this up? It’s only three million… It’s not that big of a deal..” “Look, all these people are here because it is a big deal. You deserve it for all the hard work you put in, enjoy it a little,” you say smiling, knowing he really does do quite a bit.

Just then, some of his friends notice that he is there and everyone is in a rush to see him. Before he can say anything, he is bombarded with several “congrats” and people trying to talk with him. You can tell he is a bit embarrassed and shy at all these comments as his face is turning a soft pink and he can’t stop smiling. He looks to you for some sort of help, but you simply send a wink his way and leave him to talk with some of your friends.

The rest of the night is filled with laughter, throwbacks, good food, and positive vibes. Eventually, the party dies down a bit and you two finally have some time to talk with one another. You were discussing how everyone was doing and the different conversations you each had. Just as you are finishing up a story, Leafy interrupts your laughter by kissing you softly on the lips. He finishes and says, “Thanks, for doing all of this. I really appreciate it.” You smile and say, “Anything for my cyberbully.” He grins and kisses you more deeply than before.

Pulling away to catch your breath, and the fact you are still a the party, you slip him the room key with a smirk.  He takes the card and hesitantly asks, “Y/N, what’s this?” A little shy, your face turns a bit red and you look away from his gaze. You whisper to him, “I wanted to show you how proud of you I am, so I got us a suite for later.” His grin grows and he kisses you on your cheek before grabbing your hand and saying goodbye to everyone on your way out. “I didn’t mean we should leave immediately” You say laughing at his eagerness to leave.

He turns to you, a little embarrassed and pulls out another card saying, “I may have wanted to leave sooner… I didn’t think you had planned for us to stay so I got us a room as well.” You both chuckle at his actions. “And why is that?” You ask. He smirks and kisses you, enjoying the feeling of your lips on his. He heats things up by caressing your hips slightly and slipping his reptillian tongue into your mouth. After a minute or so, you pull away to catch your breath and he says, “I wanted to show you how much I appreciate you.” The two of you headed up to your suite and spent the night showing how much you appreciate and support one another.

Again, a bit short but hey, I hope you liked it! I at the minimum try to generate some sort of visual for you guys with the stories. Let me know what you guys think, I hope you’re having a lovely day. Hopefully posting multiple today will make up for my lack of them this past week. I’ve been working more than I thought I was going to. Let me know what kind of fic you are looking to see next. 100 Notes and I’ll throw Leafy a party ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Hey! Hope you've been having a great winter. I wanted to let you (And whoever else may be running this page) know that it's one of my favorite blogs. Learning something new every day is a treat, especially when no longer being in school and such. I wanted to ask, as someone who knows basic history of the Vikings and Norse, are there any books or novels that I can read, perhaps for educational purposes or even entertainment that can help in learning? I'm absolutely absorbed by the culture. Thanks

Velkominn, michael-ormais,
(Welcome, michael-ormais,)

I have indeed been having a pleasant winter. Well, if you could call it a winter, because I currently live in Florida, which does not participate in that season very often.

I am extremely honored that this blog is one of your favorites! Perhaps I don not deserve it, but I greatly appreciate it. It is just one person running this blog, and that is me, though that does not say too much, does it? Anyway, I thank you and appreciate your ardent interest.

I definitely know plenty of books that could help you to accomplish both of those goals. For introductory sake, I would start with the two books I have listed below. In the Viking History course I took, these two books were our lecture supplements:

The Viking Age: A Reader.

This book gives excerpts of translated primary sources involving various aspects of the Viking world. It will give you a good idea of what their world was like, and through many eyes, for that matter.

Penguin’s Historical Atlas of the Vikings.

This is a good visual guide. It will not only show you maps and artifacts, but it does a wonderful job at summarizing the Viking world, its culture, and the events involved with it.

Mythology, if you are not yet already familiar with it, is also a great place to start. I recommend starting with primary sources, though even these have their problems.

The Prose Edda.

Many people prefer the poems, contained in the book below, but I felt that it was best to begin with Snorri’s Prose Edda because it is straightforward, giving the reader a basic understanding that can go a long way when reading the poems

The Poetic Edda.

There are many translations, which come with a lot of variation, of course. I would start with the one I included above, but I feel that Lee M. Hollander’s is among the better translations out there.

After all of that, I would look towards the Íslendingasögur, of the Icelandic family sagas. They are not from the Viking Age, more so during the thirteenth century, but they still involve a lot of the same cultural and social practices that likely existed, in some form, during the Viking Age.
