Reputation Theory by alltooalex

As November 10th is getting closer and more information is being shared each day about the songs on Reputation, I can’t stop thinking about the theory that the fifteen Taylor’s present at the end of the Look What You Made Me Do video are representations of the fifteen tracks on the album. Because of this, I have decided to compile all my own theories on Reputation into one big post to share with everyone here on Tumblr…

Track 1: The Birdcage Taylor / Ready For It
This Taylor is clad in orange and depicted inside a giant gold cage, referencing a prisoner. We already know that this track is ‘Ready For It’. The three lyrics of ‘me I was a robber first time that he saw me’, ‘but if I’m a thief then he can join the heist’, and ‘he can be my jailer, Burton to this Taylor’ all perfectly fit this image. This song is asking ‘are you ready for it?’ as in ‘are you ready for the intense media scrutiny that comes along with being in a relationship with me?’.

Track 2: Snake Taylor
Hiss hiss bitch, this Taylor has taken reclaiming her image to a whole new level by presenting herself as the queen of snakes. You think Taylor Swift is a snake? Watch Taylor Swift be the biggest snake you’ve ever seen! This look is pretty self-explanatory in my eyes. I think this will be the ultimate diss song to everyone who has ever wronged her. All the haters better watch their back, because we all know that all Taylor thinks about is karma.

Track 3: Shake It Off Taylor
This Taylor is the ballerina of the Shake It Off music video. Both the Shake It Off song and music video send the message that in spite of hate you should never stop being yourself. This Taylor says “yeah, you can’t possibly be that surprised all the time” recognising that Taylor is aware of the things people say about her, just like she was when she wrote Shake It Off. It’s hard to say what this track will be about because I think this album focuses on confronting hate rather than ignoring it, but it could be a song about Taylor being happy with her life right now. Shake It Off in its essence is about embracing life and enjoying yourself, and Taylor really has been glowing in the rare glimpses we’ve seen of her this era.

Track 4: Zombie Taylor
The Old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now… Why? Oh, cause she’s dead. I know this Taylor has a lot of links to the Kimye drama, but I think the most important part of Zombie Taylor is that she is the death of Out of the Woods Taylor. Out of the Woods Taylor represented a Taylor who had found herself outside of a relationship and was happy within her own right. I think the Kimye situation, as well as her breakup with Calvin and short-lived relationship with Tom, may have left Taylor feeling as if she had lost who she was. Similar to how she describes feeling All Too Well, I think this will be a song about finding herself again (or bringing herself back from the dead).

Track 5: Junior Jewels Taylor
This Taylor is a replica of Junior Jewels Taylor from her 2008 You Belong with Me video, except this shirt sports all the names of her current day friends! On Taylor’s past albums Track 5 has been the sad song™, however, I think Reputation might break this tradition and this will be a song about Taylor and her friends (think ‘22’ 2.0). Could the candids of Taylor’s upcoming music video (x), in which she is hanging out in London with some friends, be more evidence to support this?

Track 6: Dance Sequence Taylor / Look What You Made Me Do
This Taylor reflects the dark image she projected leading up to the announcement of Reputation. We already know that this track is ‘Look What You Made Me Do’. Through this track, Taylor is recognising the hate she received in 2016 and taking back her narrative through Reputation (‘maybe I got mine, but you’ll all get yours’). This song has loose ties to her Kimye fued, with this Taylor saying ‘what’s with that bitch?’ in reference to The Old Taylor and the lyric ‘I don’t like your titled stage’.

Track 7: Met Gala Taylor
This Taylor was super dramatic and over the top, gasping and holding a hand to her head. For some reason this Taylor gives me strong Wildest Dreams vibes, so I think this will be a love song about Joe. The fact that this Taylor was buried by Zombie Taylor could also hint at this being a love song, since the most popular criticism of Taylor in the past has been that she only writes songs about romance and relationships.

Track 8: 2009 VMAs Taylor
This Taylor is the iconic 2009 VMAs Taylor, referencing the night that started her eight-year long Kanye feud. Ironically, this Taylor says the quote that ended this same feud, ‘I would very much like to be excluded from this narrative’. I think this will be the Kanye song we all expect from Reputation, expect it will not be a repeat of Innocent because Taylor is not going to forgive and forget this time. Rumours out of the secret sessions say that there is a definite Kanye mention on Reputation – this is it.

Track 9: Receipts Taylor
This Taylor is full of sass and is ‘getting receipts, I’m gonna edit this later’. I think the most important part of this Taylor is the line ‘I’m gonna edit this later’. Leading up to her break, Taylor’s life was constantly documented, be it through paparazzi shots, excerpts from interviews, or even fan videos at her concerts. A lot of the things she did and often twisted into something they weren’t (such as Kim Kardashian editing her phone call with Kanye on snapchat, hence the ‘I’m gonna edit this later’). I think this will be a song about how Taylor is tired of being portrayed as something she is not.

Track 10: Fearless Taylor
This Taylor is a homage to the Fearless era, equip with her bedazzled guitar and all. I think this will be the sad song™ of Reputation. We have been told by those who attended the secret sessions that there is one track in particular that ‘made everyone sob’ (Fearless Taylor cries in the LWYMMD music video) and ‘has better lyrics than All Too Well’ (Taylor writes her best lyrics when it is just her and her guitar) – this is it. I also think this track could be about her breakup with Adam (Calvin), since that fits the sad song™ idea and Taylor wrote the country song Better Man about him (Fearless Taylor was country).

Track 11: We are Never Getting Back Together Red Tour Taylor
This Taylor is the only old Taylor from the Red era and she chose her We are Never Getting Back Together tour look for a reason. I think this will be a song about the moment she realised her and Adam are never ever getting back together, perhaps after he attacked her regarding ‘Nils Sjolberg’ on Twitter. This Taylor says ‘oh stop acting like you’re all nice, you are so fake’ in the LWYMMD video – could this be a hint that he portrayed the Nils Sjolberg incident as it was all her idea and she was to blame, when in fact that wasn’t the case?

Track 12: Reputation Taylor
I don’t give a damn about my reputation – or do I? This Taylor is the Reputation Taylor the mountain of old Taylor’s a striving to reach. This image demonstrates how she has worked so hard to be successful and build a career she is proud of, yet her achievements are constantly overshadowed by the negative image that is portrayed of her by the media. I have no doubt that the hate Taylor receives gets to her as she is only human, so I think this will be a song about what brought Taylor to write the Reputation album.

Track 13: Stream Co. Taylor
This Taylor references the drama that followed her after releasing the apple music letter and how everyone presented her as greedy despite the fact that she was just standing up for others. I don’t think this song will be about that, though. This Taylor is ‘blind for love’ so I think this will be a song about how Joe stole her heart / how they fell in love. I think Taylor would have been scared to fall in love after how her relationship with Tom was played out in the media, but her connection with Joe was strong enough to overcome that. There is a wedding ring open in this scene of the LWYMMD video, possibly hinting that Joe is the one for her? After all, this is track 13.

Track 14: Biker Taylor
This Taylor is one bad ass bitch. Not only is she dressed head to toe in leather and rhinestones, she literally lifts up two motorcycles with her bare hands. Along with this, biker Taylor is quoted as saying ‘there she goes, playing the victim, again’, recognising one of the biggest insult Taylor receives. Because of all of this, I think this will be a song about how strong Taylor is now and how she is anything but the victim.

Track 15: The Real Taylor
Finally, this Taylor is the real Taylor who cuts off the wings of her Reputation plane in order for it to stay grounded. I think this song will be the real heartbreaker of Reputation, and is quite possibly the song that made everyone cry from the secret sessions (if I am wrong about Track 10). I think this will be about how no matter what Taylor does and no matter how hard she tries, she will never be perfect. Similar to the idea of Clean, once she has this realisation she feels free and much happier. It is evident in this era more than ever that Taylor loves her fans and feels as if she can trust us. This is because not including her family and friends, we alone know who she really is.

Theory: Mystery Man IS Eren

I know I’m not really the type to post Attack on Titan theories but I just can’t help myself with this one because I am 99.9999999% sure the “mystery man” we see in chapter 93 and 94 has to be EREN. The only reason why I’m not 100% sure is because I’m keeping in mind that there’s a chance Isayama might just pull a “here’s a new important character!” move, which honestly doesn’t make sense in this case for so many reasons… but you never know, right?

So with the latest chapter out, I knew that Isayama was going to bring this guy up again. Of course, I was hoping that the identity of this man would’ve been revealed already but it looks like he’s purposely keeping the identity secret to keep us readers on edge.

Now for those of you who wonder why I am so confident that this is Eren, I can first state the obvious point:

1. Appearance: Considering that there has been a three year time skip, it would be realistic to assume that Eren has grown out his hair even more by now. Aside from that, chapter 90 heavily implied that there was going to be a great change to Eren’s character. His tired eyes and lengthy hair was not only meant to be symbolic of his mental state, but also a new direction to his character.

I know quite a few people have already made these panel comparisons, but it’s important to keep in mind that in this panel above, the mysterious person is spying on Reiner (I will get into more detail about the importance of this later).

Now I know this one seems a bit of a stretch, because I’m going into the nitty gritty details but bear with me for a minute. We know that Isayama gives distinct facial features despite his inconsistencies (although that’s because he has improved on his art), and since we aren’t given much of the mystery man’s face to look at, I figured we can pay attention to his nose. So we know that Eren has grown out his hair since chapter 90, but we can also see here that the man’s nose shape looks very similar to Eren’s (scroll up to compare with the first panel of Eren). It’s not crooked, curved, or super round. It has just that shape that would fit within Eren’s facial profile. Had there been any other character with this hairstyle or someone who could possibly have grown this hairstyle as well, I wouldn’t have pointed this detail out because there are of course other characters with this similar nose shape. The mere fact that Isayama is only giving so little for us to look at makes me think he had to leave out some sort of hint, right? In fact, he could have completely cut out the mystery man’s face so that we only see his hair and then Falco’s face.

Aside from the nose, it’s hard to tell the eye shape but I can say that it appears to be a bigger eye (which Eren has) if you look at the distance from the eyebrow.

Furthermore, if you look closely at the man’s hair scalp area, it is in the same position as Eren’s is. The hair separates in the middle. The fact that this detail is added in this panel above further points out a clue as to who this person could be.

Also, side note but if this does end up being Eren then it seems that the guy has grown a bit of a stub (which honestly makes me so excited for some reason??? lol)

I also need to stress that if this were a “new” or “unknown” character, why would Isayama go through the effort of hiding the man’s face and showing as little as possible? Clearly this is someone we know and considering that he reappears in this chapter means this guy isn’t just some random dude we should feel sorry for, or??

Lastly, I just want to briefly point out that the armband being misplaced implies that this person clearly isn’t familiar with this environment, which is why most of us can at least agree that this is a spy.

2. Eren likes to “act” before he goes in for the kill:

I would like to remind you guys the times Eren has tried to “trick” his enemies by playing innocent before attacking them. Here are some examples:

I think these parallels are important to point out because they show an aspect of Eren’s character, that being that he likes to deceive his enemies (although in a bit of a childish way). For Eren to play as an injured soldier seems very fitting to his character. Of course, I get that he’s a spy and has to “fit in” with the crowd, but he could’ve skipped the effort of cutting his own leg off, right?? Well, I would say that Eren wants to portray himself as weak and vulnerable because that brings less suspicion. I doubt that the Marley soldiers are going to pick on a guy missing a leg, and through this Eren can easily win their sympathy as he did when he tried to rescue Mikasa from the kidnappers.

3. The mystery man was spying on Reiner:

If you were to ask yourself who Eren would look for if he were to spy on the Marley, wouldn’t the best candidate be Reiner? I mean, if this spy really isn’t Eren, why pay particular attention to Reiner out of all people?? It could have been someone on a much higher position if we’re talking about getting secret information. The fact that this man was watching Reiner heavily implies that he knows who Reiner is, and is using him to find the others. Sure, he could also have gone for Zeke since he has seen the guy before, but I’m sure Eren holds a bigger grudge against Reiner for the moment (he also only saw Zeke for a brief moment so there’s that too). That being said, I have a feeling that this foreshadows a reunion between Reiner and Eren. I wouldn’t be surprised if Eren still wanted to get rid of Reiner first before making any other move. This would make more sense as to why he would choose to spy on Reiner more.

EDIT 4. Eren being the spy fits with the narrative:

@featherpoet made a pretty good point about this so I’m just going to simply quote what they said:

“Since we’ve passed over to the Marley PoV, we’ve seen sooooo many parallels between the characters that grew up there and the ones we knew from Paradis. Gabi -> Eren, Reiner -> Armin, etc. So, it makes narrative sense that the infiltrator would also fit into some sort of mirrored position, since that’s the kind of story that Isayama is telling.

Eren Jaeger is named after Eren Kruger. You know. The spy who informed on the Marley and had a premonition about Mikasa and Armin. It makes soooo much sense that the second Eren would also sneak into the Marley camp. Like, the narrative framing is just too good to pass up. No other character could fit that well.”

EDIT 5. There are parallels seen between Reiner and Eren in the chapter:

@lady-bluebird-luv makes a case pointing out the similarities the two characters have, and I think this only strengthens my prediction that we’re going to see Eren take the role that Reiner had when he was infiltrating Paradis Island. To quote:

“Both of them have come face-to-face with what they consider to be monsters. We also learn in this chapter that Reiner’s father is Marleyian, and his mother is Eldian. Eren’s parents are both Eldians, but his mother is a Walldian while his father is from outside of the walls. In fact, both Eren and Reiner have fathers from the other side of the walls. for Reiner, it’s the wall between the true Marleyians and the Eldians. For Eren, it’s the wall between Paradise and the rest of the world. In a sense, they’re both hybrids.”

With the previous chapter where we had the mystery guy watching Reiner, I think this parallel we’re seeing only further strengthens my theory that that person is definitely Eren. It’s almost symbolic when you think about it because if this person is Eren, then there might be an implication that Eren might want to take away everything Reiner cherishes (hence making that panel feel more eerie because the danger is literally behind his back). Think about it, we see Reiner in that moment trying to guide the kids away from a place that he considers to be too dangerous, and coincidentally but not coincidentally we see that mystery guy in that direction. Now do I think Eren would do something that cruel? Well, considering the parallels we’re seeing now, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Eren doing it for sake of making Reiner feel the same pain as he did when he lost his mother.

Now I’ve noticed there are certain claims that have made people skeptical about this person being Eren, and there are a few I would like to argue against:

1. It’s too obvious!!

Okay, first of all, this isn’t the first time Isayama has been “obvious” in regards to the mysteries of AoT. Remember the Female Titan? It was pretty obvious that while all the characters were trying to figure out the identity, most of us knew it was Annie with all the screaming hints we were given. It’s true that sometimes Isayama likes to give as few hints as possible so that the reader doesn’t figure out too much but I think in this case Isayama wants to warn the reader that this person is someone we should watch closely rather than wonder who the hell this person could possibly be.

2. Why would the Survey Corps take such a risk with Eren??

My guess is that either this is actually part of the Survey Corps plan OR Eren decided to run off on his own due to disagreements. Besides, the Survey Corps HAS made risky decisions before. They always have, and it’s not sure whether Eren is the only spy right now. However, I’m gonna go with the latter because it really does make sense that Eren would go on an independent mission. Let’s refer to chapter 45, shall we?

Remember these pages? It’s pretty telling that this is a foreshadowing of what’s to come for Eren. So to say that Eren would be rash enough to charge against an entire country on his own isn’t too crazy to believe. This is exactly what the reader should expect Eren to do. It was him after all who brought up the idea of killing the enemies on the other side. When Eren has a new goal, he’ll charge after it even if everyone else disagrees with him.

3. Eren wouldn’t be stupid enough to wear the armband on the wrong side!

Ummmm… yes he would actually?? A hot-headed, emotional, acts-first-thinks-later-type-of-guy would do just that??? Sounds like the Eren I know, at least. This isn’t Armin we’re talking about here, you know?? I highly doubt Eren would pay attention to such a small detail. This is the guy who denied all the evidence that Annie was the Female Titan, despite how obvious it was (although be it that his emotions clouded his judgement). He’s never been the guy to come up with a brilliant plan, and I think we can all agree on that. Consider the fact that this guy likes to “look at the bigger picture”, I don’t think you should be surprised that he made such a simple mistake.

4. The mystery man has limbs cut off! Shouldn’t they have regenerated??

I know others have already explained this one, but I’d like to point out anyway that Reiner managed to control his bitten arm from healing. In this case, it’s very possible that Eren is doing the same and must’ve trained himself to hold back from healing. No need for further explanation.

5. It could be Jean since he has disguised himself as Eren before!

Okay, this one really doesn’t make any sense, considering that if this is true then the Survery Corps are allowing a man with a missing leg to for some reason disguise as Eren with longer hair which NO ONE from the Marley side (Reiner and Zeke) remember him having??? I mean, I highly doubt Jean became a Titan shifter unless he ate Annie which just makes my brain hurt because this theory just doesn’t add up whatsoever lol. Sorry, but I just don’t see a severely injured Jean to follow a plan like this.

6. Reiner and Zeke would recognise Eren if they saw him!

Actually, no I don’t think they would. Not at first glance, at least. With longer hair, a stub, and a missing leg, one could easily overlook Eren as just another injured soldier. Keep in mind that having longer hair makes it easier to hide his face from others. Eren’s change in his appearance makes all the more sense for him to go undercover.

7. How are the Survey Corps going to defend themselves if Eren is gone?

I think after the multiple ships sent to Paradis Island that ended up disappearing, I don’t think the Marley are stupid enough to continue sending more. After all, Zeke did mention that they needed a “proper” plan to retrieve the Titan powers. Also, they still have Armin, and maybe even Annie I mean ffs she better not still be in that crystal after all this time lol. I’m sure they are not completely helpless without Eren’s power.

8. How would Eren not be spotted when coming over to the Marley side?

Well, considering that we know this mysterious guy is all injured, it’s very possible that Eren used this injury to disguise himself as a soldier who was part of the 4 year war. Did he use a small boat to come over? Or did he hijack one of the ships that tried to invade Paradis Island? If he did the latter, then it would have been reported being seen arrive back. My guess is he used one of the Marley soldiers to help him navigate through Marley territory without being spotted. It’s very possible that he still used one of the ships that invaded Paradis Island but found a way to sink it before being seen (he is a Titan shifter so I’ll leave the rest to your imagination). Hell, maybe he even managed to find himself in the middle of a battle before the war ended and that’s how he came up with the idea of injuring himself so it could look like he was on the battlefield.

So those are my opinions on the Mystery Man as of now. I’m sure I’ve probably forgotten to add some other important points so I’ll be sure to do so if I feel the need to. Feel free to agree or disagree. I’d love to hear what other thoughts people have but for now I am definitely leaning towards this guy being Eren. All the clues seem to point to him.

Public Shame

As I mentioned, I recently read Jon Ronson’s book “So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed” and thought it made some very compelling points on the renaissance of public shaming in the age of social media.  I was going to post my highlights, but then I realized I’d highlighted about 30% of the book, so instead:

I wrote down what I thought were some of the key, take-home points the book made, and pulled quotes from the book in no particular order for each of them.  It’s  still a wall of text, but feel free to wade in if you’re interested.

Again, I strongly recommend giving this book a read.

  • Public shaming is often motivated by a belief that one is Doing Good
  • Public shaming is about social conformity
  • Public shaming can make us LESS aware of viewpoints different that our own
  • Shame works because we are all afraid
  • Shaming others can bring out our own brutality
  • Shame leads to dehumanization and “death of the soul”
  • Shame leads to violence
  • Technology has strange warping effects on how public shaming affects us (and social media shaming can have longer impacts than we expect)
  • There is evidence that “De-shaming” may have more positive outcomes than shaming

quotes from the book supporting each point under the cut. (bolding mine, quotes by paragraph and in no particular order)

It irks me when people say that Dany is nothing without her dragons. GRRM described her as a warrior Queen some years ago. He compared her to Nymeria the warrior queen from Dorne. I can't find the source but I do remember reading it. I wonder how Martin feels when people try to deminish one of his favorite characters? He must take some offense or something.

Hey anon,

I’m sure GRRM is used to it by now, but I think he probably laughs to himself when people are so off about one of his characters.

Regarding Dany, her dragons are in a way a symbolic representation of her own power. People who say she’s nothing without her dragons don’t understand the character and quite frankly have a really shitty memory. Her dragons did not make her strong enough to survive and get the respect of Drogo, or to cross the Red Waste, or to come up with the entire plan to sack Astapor without anyone’s help, or her plan to make Yunkai put down their swords with minimum bloodshed. He dragons are not what inspires her people or keeps them loyal to her, it’s her and fight to free the slaves and to treat them like people.

It’s funny that you mentioned Nymeria because I was discussing with a friend the many similarities Dany shares with her. GRRM has compared Dany to Nymeria (who is Dany’s ancester from her great-great-grandfathers marriage to Mariah Martell) on a couple of occasions. Here is one

In particular, given that Nymeria was a warrior-queen, is there a certain amazon tradition?

“The Rhoynar did impact Dorne in a number of ways, some of which will be revealed in later books. Women definitely have more rights in Dorne, but I would not call it an “Amazon” tradition, necessarily. Nymeria had more in common with someone like Daenerys or Joan d'Arc than with Brienne or Xena the Warrior Princess.”

I found this fantastic comparison between Dany and Nymeria, I’ll quote my favorite parts but you can find the discussion here: (The bolded are quotes from the books.)

The refugee, the nomad, the woman wearing the literal skirt and metaphorical pants

“In the songs, Nymeria is said to have been a witch and a warrior; neither of these claims is true. Though she did not bear arms in battle, she led her soldiers on many battlefields, commanding them with cunning and skill.”

Dany is doing the exact same thing. She’s a warlord that’s not a warrior. And yes, you can be a warlord with absolutely no skill at arms, else Dany wouldn’t be called Aegon the Conqueror with teats.

Now let’s skim over Nymeria’s general history as it applies to Dany so far.

“Only Princess Nymeria of Ny Sar spoke against him. “This is a war we cannot hope to win,” she warned, but the other princes shouted her down and pledged their swords to Garin.”

In AGOT, Viserys is dreaming his fool dreams about re-taking Westeros with Dothraki. Dany knows better. She’s also somewhat skeptical of the Dothraki taking Westeros from the start, mostly thanks to Jorah Mormont educating her.

“The same fate awaited her own city, she saw.”

Nymeria runs for it after Valyria massacres the Rhoyanar men. After Drogo dies, Dany hatches her invaluable dragons. She’s also left with few Dothraki, and she has to flee from various Khals (on top of her constant running from Robert).

“Nymeria’s voyage was long and terrible.”

The difficulty of the Red Waste corresponds to this. Then, Nymeria had her Odyssey: Rhoyne -> Basilisk Isles -> jungles of Sothoryos -> Isle of Naath -> Summer Isles (Isle of Women). She couldn’t stay in any of these places, because~

“(…) arrived at Yeen to find that every man, woman, and child in that haunted, ruined city had vanished overnight.”

Haunted (to the eye) ruins, like the House of the Undying?

“The sullen wet heat oppressed their spirits, and swarms of stinging flies spread one disease after another (…)”

and

“On Naath, the Isle of Butterflies, the peaceful people gave them welcome, but the god that protects that strange land began to strike down the newcomers by the score with a nameless mortal illness”

Illness, like the Bloody Flux outbreak? Also, Missandei - one of Dany’s main helpers - is a friendly girl from Naath Dany finds somewhere at the halfway point of her journey.

“Basilisk Isles (…) only to fall afoul of the corsair kings (…) carrying off hundreds into slavery.”

and

“new towns on Basilisk Point were raided by slavers,”

Well, what do you know, Dany’s slave liberation campaign isn’t working out so well. In fact, seemingly half of the slaving Essos is sending armies against her in ADWD - Yunkai, Qarth, New Ghis, Tolos, Elyria, Volantis, the Harpies within Meereen itself.

“In the Summer Isles (…) its thin stony soil yielded little food, and many starved.”

As Dany approached Meereen, the slavers put the land around it to torch to starve her out. She still took the city, but many of her people are nonetheless starving.

“The battered, tattered remainder of the ten thousand ships sailed west with Princess Nymeria. This time she made for Westeros.”

Dany at the end of ADWD:

“Meereen was not her home, and never would be. It was a city of strange men with strange gods and stranger hair, of slavers wrapped in fringed tokars, where grace was earned through whoring, butchery was art, and dog was a delicacy. Meereen would always be the Harpy’s city, and Daenerys could not be a harpy.

Never, said the grass, in the gruff tones of Jorah Mormont. You were warned, Your Grace. Let this city be, I said. Your war is in Westeros, I told you.”

The once and future queen

Back to Nymeria and why I think Dany will do well in Westeros~

“Dry, desolate, and thinly peopled, Dorne at this time was a poor land where a score of quarrelsome lords and petty kings warred endlessly over every river, stream, well, and scrap of fertile land.”

Wet, desolate and overflowing with corpses, at the end of ADWD Westeros is a fucked-up continent where a score of quarrelsome lords and petty kings war endlessly over everything. Euron, Tommen, Aegon, Stannis, KINGINDANORF? are just the Kings we have. (Does the Night King count?)

“Most of these Dornish lords viewed the Rhoynar as unwelcome interlopers, invaders with queer foreign ways and strange gods, who should be driven back into the sea whence they’d come.”

Yeah, Dany will have barbarians, slaves (you think Westerosi can notice they have no collars?), the infamous Imp, dragons, a trail of burning enemies behind her. She won’t get warm reception from most.

And they lived happily ever after

Well, probably not. I don’t see how GRRM will keep Dany on Nymeria’s track without breaking his tone.

“Though she married twice more (first to the aged Lord Uller of Hellholt, and later to the dashing Ser Davos Dayne of Starfall, the Sword of the Morning), Nymeria herself remained the unquestioned ruler of Dorne for almost twenty-seven years, her husbands serving only as counselors and consorts.”

I suppose that in a certain way, Mors can also work as Drogo, old Lord Uller as lame King Hizdahr, and the Sword of the Morning as… Jon NOT DARKSTAR, because I refuse to contemplate the possibility of Darkstar (she already did Bad Boy Daario). The husbands as consorts works for Hizadhr, and whomever her prophesized 3rd husband is, Dany will be leading in her own right - Drogon, Dracarys! helps there.

“She survived a dozen attempts upon her life, put down two rebellions, and threw back two invasions by the Storm King Durran the Third and one by King Greydon of the Reach.”

Dany already survived at least 4-5 attempts on her life - AGOT wineseller, ACOK manticore and arguably Undying, ASOS Titan’s Bastard, ADWD Poizdar do Loqust. I also don’t see Stannis bending to Dany, same for Tyrells who’ll stay with Tommen Lannister. Other possibilities for revolting kingdoms are Dorne (the irony!) and Iron Islands.

That was pretty awesome, there are more quote at the link if you want to read all the parallels between these awesome women.

I will add one thing regarding Nymeria’s 3 husbands vs. Dany’s 3 husbands.

Nymeria’s first husband (Mors Martell) came from a people who are famed for their horses (Dorne), Dany’s first husband came from a people famed for their horses (Dothraki).

Nymeria’s second husband came from Hellholt (Lord Uller), which is symbolized by a sort of fiery yin-yang thing, it’s half this and half that, it’s divided basically. Dany’s second husband was symbolized by the Harpy, half woman, and half bird.

Finally, Nymeria’s third and final husband was Ser Davos Dayne the Sword of the Morning, I do wonder if the Sword of the Morning will play a role in the books as it has been mentioned a lot. And whether Jon will use it or not. Jon does have a connection to an actual Sword of the Morning in Author Dayne. And of course, there is the whole War for Dawn thing going one.

Sorry, I hijacked your asked but yeah, Dany doesn’t need to wield a sword to be kickass, just look at her very kickass ancestor Nymeris.

★ lvtvr’s long-winded writing advice ★

Heyo. I’m Charlie and I write. You may know me for my Keith/Lance fanfics. I don’t know if it helps my credibility, but I have articles in print that I’ve been paid to produce, I’ve translated and proofread four novels, and I’ve been writing off and on for nearly eighteen years. I’m not perfect, I’m not a master, but I do know what I’m doing. So if you write too, and you want to get better, here are some of the things I’ve learned.

Less is more.

You know the quote “Blood orange? Shut up, it’s fucking red.” Remember this while you’re writing. If you’ve ever seen one of those “100 synonyms for ‘said’ to use while writing :)” lists, here’s what to do with it: burn it. No one utters or opines or verbalizes shit. They fucking say it.

Basically: use vocabulary that you know. Turn to big fancy words if you are certain that they’re the best way to express the nuance you’re going for, but avoid them if you’re only using them to make your prose more “interesting.” Don’t worry about sounding a little repetitive. Sounding pretentious or like someone who hangs out too much on Thesaurus.com is a lot worse.

Remember your whole body.

Ever read writing that punches you in the gut and makes you feel things? Ever aspired to create something like that yourself? Well, the key to doing it is to remember the body. Stay aware of the fact that we exist in the world as messy 3D beings made of blood and meat and emotion.

It’s natural for most people to start with visual impressions and describe what things look like, but your writing won’t start to come alive until you also begin describing what they feel like, smell like, taste like. The five senses are a cheesy but effective checklist. Throw in sounds, smells, and body sensations alongside the visual aspect.

This goes for emotion, too. If your character is sad, think back to what you felt like when you were sad. Heavy gut? Rain clouds in your head? Tears pricking at the backs of your eyes, but never quite falling? All that is a lot more interesting than simply saying “they were sad.”

For the love of God, never type “Hello.” He said.

This falls under the general umbrella of using correct grammar (which you should!), but I feel the need to point this particular faux pas out because a) it’s soooo common for people to do this, and b) I can’t stand it. This is the type of persistent mistake that actively interferes with the flow of the writing for me as a reader. I don’t care if some big-name fic author does it or if you’ve seen a million others do it – you’ll never find it in a professionally proofread and edited book. Because, at the end of the day, it’s wrong.

Compare these two examples:

“This sucks.” She sighed.
“This sucks,” she sighed.

In the first example, she says the words first, and sighs afterward. In the second, she’s sighing the words. Simple difference. If the action is directly related to how the dialogue is being conveyed, it should come attached to the dialogue. If the action and dialogue are separate, separate them. Throwing in a bunch of loose, orphaned “He said” clauses is choppy and incorrect and pisses me off to an irrational degree. Please, please avoid this. I’m begging you on my hands and knees.

Focus your characterization.

Keeping characters in character is one of the biggest challenges of writing. I find that an easy way to stay on track is to summarize the character’s way of reacting to the world in one or two simple sentences, and when you’re not sure what they would say or do, try to keep it in line with that basic conception.

For example, I’ve characterized Keith from Voltron as someone who “feels things very strongly and honestly, but has trouble putting his emotions into words.” My Hunk is “prone to gossip, but has a heart of gold and the strongest sense of justice you ever saw.” I keep this minimalist notion of a character at the front of my mind when I write them, and it usually helps them stay themselves.

Try to keep it general, though. “Passionate about food,” “flirts a lot,” or “in love with Mothman” aren’t basic personalities, they’re character traits. They don’t tell us anything about how someone will act in a given situation, and make for poor, flat characterization.

Write what you want to read.

No, really. I know that the urge to pander is strong, as is the desire to give the people what they want. But you’re people, too. Give yourself what you want. Is this hard? You bet. But it’s worth it when someone tells you “God, reading this is so refreshing. I’m so glad it wasn’t exactly like everything else.”

Voltron-specific stuff incoming here, but I feel like it’s important. Listen. Don’t write a fic where Keith and Lance have one (1) drawn-out argument before falling in hapless, sappy love, where Keith and Shiro are brothers and Hunk and Pidge are the Hilarious Meme Sidekicks, just because you feel like you have to. If you’re really passionate about that scenario, then by all means write it, but don’t do it because you’re afraid that’s all people are going to want to read. It’s not true. More likely than not, they’re sick of reading the same fic for the millionth time, and they’d love to see your take on things.

Remember: Fanon isn’t the law. Not even canon is the law. Follow your kokoro. Go weird places. You do you. I will be cheering you on.

Kudos to you if you read this entire mess. I hope it could be of some help. Now go write! I believe in you, friendo.

anonymous asked:

Care to elaborate on your tags re: Harry's music and your worries concerning content vs form? I don't get it. Thanks.

So short version (I’ll try and write a post that explains what I actually mean some time in the future - but I can already feel that this post is going to be long).  my concerns about Harry’s music are quite personal.  I really value specificity in music and also fun/joy.  Harry’s interview further suggested that I probably couldn’t expect much of either of these things from his album.  I’d kind of figured that from SOTT and ESNY.  I don’t think joy or specificity are where he’s at as a songwriter - and I also think there is a lot about his position that would discourage joy (and even more so) specificity in songs.  I find the reasons that he might not be into joy and specificity in songs quite endearing and I have huge sympathy for them.  So it doesn’t necessarily change the way I respond to him as a person, but it will change the way I respond to his music.  And it does make me sad, for me, that the music he’s putting out won’t be the sort of music that most resonates with me.

********

The content vs. form thing of his interview is kind of a feature of the form itself.  Long celebrity interviews are this dance where the celebrity performs being accessible and intimate, while staying on brand and the journalist writes as if they’re revealing while also maintaining access.  To me there were these really jarring juxtapositions to the words Harry was saying and the form of the promo campaign that he was saying it.

So Harry says: “ “Who’s to say that young girls who like pop music – short for popular, right? – have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy?” etc in his first in depth print interview with a magazine whose entire mission has been to uphold the supremacy of the 30-year-old hipster guy.  This venue and the interviewer were very definitely chosen to signal to those 30-year-old hipster guy that it was OK to like Harry.  On top of that Harry carefully and repeatedly uses the word honest - to signal to those readers that his music is better and more authentic now than it was in One Direction when those teenage girls liked him.

Or Harry says: “I feel like they were always thinking, ‘OK, this ride could stop at any point and we’re going to have to be there when it does.’ There was something about playing the album and how happy I was that told them, ‘If all I get is to make this music, I’m content. If I’m never on that big ride again, I’m happy and proud of it.'” While part of an incredibly highly controlled, high-stakes, promo campaign, designed to make him a solo superstar.

Now that’s really normal, that’s kind of a feature of this sort of interview.  But the impression I got from to the totality of the interview was not that Harry was not just carefully selling an image, but also quite mixed up about who he wanted to be and how he wanted to relate to people, mystery vs honesty and so on.  That this jarring juxtaposition wasn’t just a feature of the form of the celebrity, but also showing how ambivalent and unclear Harry was about all this stuff.

In particular, it made me think of two different statements kind of about being seen.  One was Harry’s own, from a year in the making, “I want to be someone who doesn’t care what people think, but I just don’t think I am.” For me, everything about this promo campaign has demonstrated how much both of those things, wanting not to care, but really caring, are still absolutely true for Harry.

And the other was Jodie Foster’s coming out speech - which is a mess, but I’ve always thought a really profound mess:

…be a big coming-out speech tonight because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age, in those very quaint days when a fragile young girl would open up to trusted friends and family and co-workers and then gradually, proudly to everyone who knew her, to everyone she actually met. But now I’m told, apparently, that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference, a fragrance and a prime-time reality show. […] But seriously, if you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you’d had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you too might value privacy above all else. Privacy.

 […]

I will continue to tell stories, to move people by being moved, the greatest job in the world. It’s just that from now on, I may be holding a different talking stick. And maybe it won’t be as sparkly, maybe it won’t open on 3,000 screens, maybe it will be so quiet and delicate that only dogs can hear it whistle. But it will be my writing on the wall. Jodie Foster was here, I still am, and I want to be seen, to be understood deeply and to be not so very lonely.

(transcript here - full speech easily accessible 2013 Golden Globes).

The juxtaposition between the really deeply felt desire for privacy and the just as deeply felt desire to be seen and understood really moved me when I first saw it and I thought she made it really clear that both could be true at the same time.  And I think the speech demonstrates that when you’ve been in the public eye as long as Jodie Foster, the two desires are impossibly intertwined.

I got the same desire and contradiction (although obviously not nearly as openly laid out - which is what makes Jodie Foster’s speech extraordinarily) from Harry’s interview.

How could he feel anything else? He’s been exposed, told stories about, hidden and lied about.  How could he feel anything but a desire for privacy and a desire to be seen and understood.  How could he hope to untangle them, or even know how to act on them at his age?

And that made me very sad for him - because I want him to have it all.  I want him to be seen and understood and I want him to have all the privacy and space he needs.  And I think either will be very difficult for him to get, let alone both.

Authors, we need to talk about reviews.

This is gonna be LONG.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve seen a lot of posts about reviews. Authors pissed off at reviewers. Reviewers frustrated with authors. Various genres, different people, but the same basic theme - a review that rubs an author the wrong way, and an author who lets fly about it publicly. Y'all, we gotta rein this shit in.

Here’s the thing – I know it’s not fun to get negative reviews. I once had one that compared reading my book to getting a spinal tap. Another speculated about my sexuality, extrapolating (incorrectly) my orientation and experience based on what I’d written. The former was funny. The latter was humiliating. It killed my ability to write a particular pairing for *a year*. So, I get it. I know how much a review can hurt, particularly if it gets personal.

So what are we supposed to do? When a review is nasty, or the person clearly hated the book, or when the reviewer clearly hates the author for whatever reason?

Nothing.

We’re supposed to do….*nothing*.

Not a goddamned thing.

There are three things that are very easy to lose sight of, especially when a review hits a nerve or upsets you:

1. Reviews are for readers, not authors.

2. No review will ever damage your sales or reputation as much as your *reaction* to it.

3. Authors need reviewers, and we’re going to lose them if we make them feel at best unappreciated, at worst targeted.

Let’s unpack these a little.

1. Reviews are for readers, not authors. – Book reviews are product reviews. Books are reviewed by consumers for other consumers, not for the author’s ego or to give them pull quotes. Every reviewer has their own tastes, rating systems, quirks, pet peeves, etc., and they have the right to review your book accordingly. Yeah, sometimes we don’t like the results. But you know what? Sometimes that 1-star review for “way too much sex over the hood of the Ferrari” will be what makes the next reader 1-click your book.

2. No review will ever damage your sales or reputation as much as your *reaction* to it. – I think this is arguably the most important point I’m going to make. Authors live and die by their reputations. Unprofessional behavior will drive readers away a hell of a lot faster than a negative review.

I’m not trying to tell you that you can’t have hurt feelings or that you can’t be upset, annoyed, or pissed off by a review. Of course you can!  But be a goddamned professional about it. Vent, rage, scream, cry….in private. To other writers. To your crit partner. To someone who knows what it’s like to put a book out there and have it skinned alive right in front of you.

The minute you start ranting about it in public, it’s going to start reflecting on YOU a lot more than that review will ever reflect on your book. Whatever damage the bad review might’ve done to your sales will be a fraction of the potential damage of a public response. You want to minimize the damage of a bad review? Don’t draw attention to it.

I’m serious. Over the years, I’ve seen a number of authors who’ve flipped out about reviews, and you know what? I can’t remember the titles of any of those books or even what the reviews said, but I can suuuuuure remember who the author was. I can remember vividly who has ranted about mean reviewers, and especially those who’ve sicced readers on reviewers, but I don’t remember the books. Make of that what you will.

Do you want people to read your books, or do you want them to mentally categorize you as an author who can’t take criticism? Do you want people to review your books honestly, or do you want them to be afraid to even mention your books because you’ve proven you’ll go on the offensive if you’re not happy?  Don’t think about how much damage that 1-star review will do — think about all the 5-star reviews you’ll lose by revealing yourself to be combative and unable to weather criticism.

3. Authors need reviewers, and we’re going to lose them if we make them feel at best unappreciated, at worst targeted.

Reviews sell books. On Amazon, on Goodreads, on review sites – fact is, reviews make books move. Sometimes a review sucks, and yeah, sometimes the sales suffer for it. Sometimes a review is awesome and a book sells like hotcakes as a result. I know of what I speak because I’ve had both happen, including a book that barely sold 100 copies its first year, and suddenly sold thousands after a particularly spectacular review on Goodreads. Reviewers make your book visible, for better or worse.

But reviewers aren’t getting paid to do this. They have lives. They have things to do besides fend off attacks by angry authors. In recent years, there have been reviewers who’ve quit reviewing altogether because authors sicced their fans on them. Just today I saw a reviewer who was upset because an author lashed out at them for not reviewing an ARC promptly. (Spoiler alert, folks: reviewing a book weeks or even months after it comes out will STILL help its visibility and sales.)

The end result is we have fewer people reviewing books across the board, and that hurts everyone. Particularly those of us in niche genres.

Y'all, I get it. I do. I’ve had reviews that would make your hair curl. Some of them have been personally insulting. Some have suggested I skimmed a wiki article when in fact the subject matter was something I live and breathe. If you added up all my 1- and 2- star reviews from the last eight years, you’d discover I’m incapable of writing, know nothing about sex, have zero ability to pick up on speech patterns and emotional nuance, and have never been within 500 miles of a military base. I’ve been there, yo.

That stuff stings, but it’s part of being an author. You put something out there publicly, it’s going to be consumed by the public, and the public won’t always like it. Sometimes they’ll even say so.

Don’t be that author. Let people review your books in their own way and on their own time. Let people *hate* your books for any reason they choose to hate them. The readers who love your work won’t be put off by it.

TL;DR: Your sales won’t be destroyed by a 1-star review. Your career might, however, be damaged by your *reaction* to that 1 star review.

“What are you doing up?”

Your head shot up from the mug in your hands. You’d been staring at its now-cold contents for the past half hour, lost in your own thoughts.

“Uh, just… getting a drink.”

Peter nodded, walking past where you were sitting in order to reach the fridge. You returned your eyes to the mug in your hands. He sat down opposite you at the kitchen table, digging into a bowl of cereal. The two of you sat in silence as he ate.

He’d finished a few minutes later.

“You going up?”

“No, I… I think I’ll stay a while longer.”

He gave you a skeptical look, before glancing at the clock on the kitchen wall.

“It’s two thirty in the morning.”

You tore your eyes away from your mug and looked at him. He had crossed his arms, and was now leaning against the kitchen island.

“Not tired.”

He didn’t seem convinced.

On Jon Snow and his siblings

I think people tend to generalize and compartmentalize Jon’s love for his siblings as one single category, which is: he loves them all equally. This is not true; Jon is not a perfect character, he’s not a perfect brother, and he has good and valid reasons to have more affection for some of his siblings over the other.

AN: Hi guys! So by popular demand I made this a super short one shot! (<– that was me three hours ago. Now, it’s four pages. Sorry not sorry.) I didn’t give much context because I want your imaginations (and the possible storyline of PP3) to run wild! I hope you guys enjoy– this is my first time writing… This was inspired by a real life experience or two, so sorry if Beca seems nicer than usual. But you know how she gets with Chloe around… ANYWAYS, read on! //

“Well that was the longest night of my life.” Beca huffed, her exhaustion displayed in the way she spoke.

“Come on, you had fun.” Chloe tried, hoping to brighten the mood.

“Barely.”

Well, you can’t win ‘em all, the redhead decided with a sigh.

“I have great news for you, Beca Mitchell. The bed awaits.” Chloe said, gesturing over to the full sized bed that took up most of the tiny room as she came in the doorway. Beca shuffled in the room, reaching the bed before her entire body went slack when she quite literally face planted onto the comforter, mumbling something into the duvet that was impossible for the redhead to make out.

Chloe shook her head, not bothering to interpret whatever sarcastic remark the brunette had thrown her way, and smiling as she searched for something suitable to wear to bed. //

“Oh, uh. Sorry,” Beca quickly apologized and snapped her head away when she saw Chloe in her bra and underwear, pulling on her pajama shorts. She hadn’t realized the ginger had begun changing during their conversation, and was afraid to look that direction again. But she found herself shifting as they began discussing the meaning of Taylor Swift’s new song, that was turning into a lengthy debate. Which is how she hadn’t realized she’d begun to look in Chloe’s direction again, this time with her gaze trained on her face and nothing else.

Er, mostly.

Beca was only a human. With eyes. And she couldn’t really help if she was curious about the other girl’s body.

She knew Chloe looked good in everything she wore, but she couldn’t possibly look that beautiful all the time; it had to be some stylistic magic that Beca had yet to discover. But there she was, in all her glory and almost completely unclothed. “Damn,” she looked good. Then came the realization of saying that out loud. Beca prayed to every god there was that the ginger hadn’t heard a word. Or rather, that particular word.

In the midst of all of her introspective rambling, Beca hadn’t noticed Chloe’s absence until she’d returned with a toothbrush in her mouth, still talking animatedly about one of the Taylors in the music video, despite the foam in her mouth that was threatening to spill over.  And for some unknown reason, Beca Mitchell actually smiled. Chloe smiled too, a big toothpaste grin finishing her point and then triumphantly walking back to the sink like she’d won the argument they hadn’t even been having.

Beca took this chance to drag herself away from the bed and decided to make her best attempt to return soon. “I’ll never let go Jack!” She said, faking her struggle with an imaginary force as she disappeared behind the doorway. It was probably more energy than she had in her at the moment, but it made Chloe laugh as she passed her, heading to bed. So somehow, it was worth it.

“Liar,” she muttered looking at herself in the mirror thinking about the awful quote she just rambled off, as she took one of Chloe’s makeup wipes and slid it across her face.

Soon enough, she was racing back to the bed, landing beside Chloe with a soft “oof” and digging into the covers as fast as she could. She got settled in four seconds flat, a record for the tiny brunette, but not before Chloe spoke up.

“What about your pajamas?” Chloe asked casually as soon as she knew the girl next to her was comfortable. She then heard a noise she didn’t know was possible to come out of such a tiny human, that resembled a groan.

“I’ll get them,” Chloe offered sweetly after a moment, when it was clear that the brunette was not moving.

“Thank,” Beca said, turning over and retrieving her book from the night stand.

“Welcome,” came the reply. She handed Beca a shirt.

“Where’s the rest?” Beca said, not caring about the answer.

“It’s where your motivation to move lies.”

“Cute,” Beca said, a sarcastic smile accompanying her voice. “It’s too hot in this bed anyways,” Beca said, acting like she was bothered by Chloe’s decision. In reality, she was halfway out of her top and shimmying her bottoms down so that she could properly put her shirt on, under the sheets, of course. Or so she thought.

The red head lifted up a corner of the sheets slightly, peering down at a shirtless Beca wiggling out of her pants.

Damn,” Chloe remarked mockingly, echoing what Beca had said previously.

Dude!” exclaimed Beca when she became aware of Chloe’s eyes on her body from that comment, her face flushed with the embarrassment of earlier that night. Chloe only giggled, allowing Beca to rip the sheet away from her hands.

A good twenty minutes had passed between the two of them, Beca lost in her book all the while. Growing tired of her phone, Chloe set it down on the ground and continued to stare up at her best friend.

“What are you doing?” Beca asked, eyeing the redhead when she felt her gaze on her and then turning her attention back to her book to wait for a reply.

“Just lookin’,” Chloe drew out the ‘n’ with a smile.

“Looking at what?” Beca said, in a similar manner. “My double chin?” she added seriously.

“Among other things,” Chloe said, her voice sticky sweet.

“HEY!” Beca said, gently punching her bed mate in the arm.”You weren’t supposed to agree with me!” she exclaimed playfully, sliding her glasses off and setting them over with her book on the night stand.

“Well you asked,” Chloe pointed out, snuggling into the pillow beneath her head. Beca just let out a huff of breath and accepted her defeat as she rolled over to face the ginger.

“For a girl who doesn’t like movies, you sure know how to make a movie quote work,” Chloe said suddenly, the flirtation obvious in her voice. It took a moment for Beca to remember earlier. “It’s one of my specialties,” she replied quickly, smile big and cheesy, for once. “One of?” the older girl pressed, raising her eyebrow like she was suppressing her surprise. Beca nodded, a soft, very uncharacteristic, smile on her face. “Yeah,” she breathed, suddenly feeling like she couldn’t stay awake for another moment, even if it meant falling asleep before she was done talking to the ginger. “Night Chlo. Love you,” she said as her eyelids grew heavy.

Reaching over to Beca’s side of the bed, Chloe reached over and turned the lamp off. “Goodnight,” she chirped, her return apparent to Beca when she felt warm lips brush against hers.

“What?” Beca said, in obvious surprise, suddenly more awake.

“I said good– ahh!” Chloe’s response was interrupted by an abrupt change in lighting as Beca turned the lamp on her bedside table on. Truth be told, she didn’t know a sleepy tiny human could move so fast.

“What was that?” Beca asked plainly.

“What was what?” Chloe said, feigning innocence, her eyes shining.

“You, acquainted your lips…” Beca said slowly, pausing for a beat. “With mine,” she finished softly.

“Yeah?” Chloe asked, as if she was just coming to terms with what she just did. “So I did.”

Dead silence.

“Would you like me to do it again?” was softly whispered into the dim light.

“Yes,” the answer breathed.

The shorter woman could feel a shift in the bed as more weight was added to her side, and her heart was racing. She felt like she was going to puke into Chloe’s mouth. And that would be quite a feat: puking upwards. But ever so gently, she felt soft lips touch her own.

Beca felt her body lean upwards on it’s own accord, automatically deepening the kiss as Chloe hovered over her. It felt… nice. It felt right. She wasn’t actually desperate to get away or overly nervous, for once. She felt Chloe’s head turn to capture her lips from a different angle and almost immediately Beca reached up to grasp the older woman’s neck, tentatively bringing her closer, until their bodies were flush against one another’s. Chloes moan brought Beca courage, and an opportunity to slip her tongue into the redhead’s mouth.

Chloe tried her hardest to stay concentrated, to not break the kiss, but she couldn’t resist smiling as she began to think about what was actually happening and how it felt so damn good.

“What?” Beca as shyly, a small grin on her face, hoping she hadn’t done anything wrong.

“Is this another one of your specialties?” Chloe couldn’t help but ask, biting her lip as she traced Beca’s features with her eyes. Beca playfully shoved the extra weight off of her, setting her head back down on the pillow as she let out a breathy laugh.

“You are too much, Chloe Beale,” she said, happily turning her head to smile at the girl who was laying next to her.

Phantom of the Opera: a tale as old as...

(This is gonna be long…)

Recently I’ve re-discovered my love for “Phantom of the Opera.” It started after I saw the 2017 rendition of the tale that’s as old as time “Beauty & the Beast,” which lead to my re-reading of favorite childhood novels, “Beauty” & “Rose Daughter” by Robin McKinley. Low & behold, right next to them on my book shelf was one of my all time favorites, Gaston Leroux’s “Phantom of the Opera.” It had been a while since I’d read any of them & in re-reading them with a slightly more wise, adult POV, & a bit more life experience, I was overjoyed that the experience felt much like the 1st in the fact that I realized many details in the stories that I’d missed when I was younger. It’s nice, leaving a favored stories behind for a while & then taking it back in with a fresher perspective.

Throughout this vast re-read, I had also at the time been doing research in Greek Mythology (for another project) & also happened to be reacquainting myself with the Hades/Persephone tale. The thing about mythology is that the stories alter in certain details over time. It’s not so different from books like “Phantom of the Opera” that have so many adaptations that they all get jumbled together in their influence over our interpretations of them. When it came to Hades/Persephone what irked me in my research was discovering that Zeus was lauded throughout history. In too many interpretations/re-tellings Zeus is seen as the caring father-figure, the loving grandfatherly-figure (if we’re talking about Disney’s animated Hercules), or the seductive all power God-King. He’s someone to respect. Right? Not really!

Zeus is a man who often came down to Earth to consort with human women (those who denied him its hinted that he raped them) & was NEVER faithful to any of his wives. What, you thought Hera was his only wife? The Greeks viewed him in a traditional Patriarchal sense & that has extended throughout each new adaptation of his character. However, after reading up on Zeus, he actually had a lot in common with his father Cronus, the tyrant Titan King (Cronus may have swallowed his own children, but guess what, so did Zeus - i.e. Athena). Throughout history, literature, & Hollywood he’s portrayed as a hero, an authority figure to be lauded (& perhaps that’s our own Patriarchal society influencing us). Zeus, is in reality, extremely unfaithful, hinted as being a seducer of women & a rapist, had much in common with a former tyrant (his father), etc. Hades is typically chosen as the epitome bad guy. I mean, he had to be bad, since he ruled the Underworld (a job he never even wanted)! Right? It was actually Hades’ power, strength, natural leadership & strategy skills during the 5 yr. war between the Olympians/Titans, the Titanomachy, that enabled the Olympians to win - it was also what caused Zeus to fear Hades & trick him into ruling the Underworld (which inevitably made people wary of Hades & eventually vilified him).

When Hades meets Persephone, falling madly in love with her, he’s unsure how to proceed. Hades actually goes to Zeus, telling his brother that he’s found a potential bride but is essentially uncertain how to proceed.  “I’ll just ask my womanizing big brother, Zeus, he knows how to woo women.” (I’m paraphrasing, obviously, but you get the gist.) It is actually Zeus who suggests that Hades should kidnap Persephone. Which in itself, says more about Zeus than it does Hades, IMO!

Hades takes his brother’s advice & does as Zeus suggests, kidnapping Persephone. What’s interesting is the fact that while this 1st half of the story remains pretty consistent throughout the fogginess of history (myths do like to alter throughout time with each new interpretation of them) the 2nd half is open to much interpretation due the latter half being unclear of certain events. It’s a toss-of-the coin, a 50/50 chance; many philosophers & historians believe Persephone was taken against her will, while just as many of them suggest that Persephone saw Hades taking her to the Underworld as rescuing her from her overbearing, controlling mother, Demeter. Demeter also threatens to leave the world in a perpetual state of winter, essentially driving all of humanity into starvation,  The same speculate as to whether Persephone knew what would happen if she ate those famed pomegranate seeds.

For any story that leaves room for speculation, I’ve found that it’s what people theorize that’s far more telling of THEM as people than it is of the actual story! When people theorize that Persephone was a victim, that she was tricked, that says more about the theorist than it does Persephone, b/c the theorist is the one that is turning Persephone into the victim, not necessarily the actual story. When theorists interprets/speculates that Persephone had an intelligence that enabled her to know what she was doing, that she made her own choices, it lends Persephone the agency she deserves as a person rather than choosing to victimize her! The story also hints that Hades truly loved Persephone given that he was pretty much the only Olympian who was faithful to his wife!

Moving forward, as I re-read “Phantom of the Opera” (as well as reading “Phantom” by Susan Kay for the first time) I began noticing parallels not just with stories like “Beauty & the Beast” but also Hades/Persephone.

The most obvious parallels being: in comparison to “Beauty & the Beast” an ugly (cursed) man seeking the companionship of a woman who can love him in spite of his ugliness; in comparison to Hades/Persephone, when the Phantom absconds with Christine, taking her down to his lair to make her his bride. The latter parallel also reminds me of the french epic poem “Eloa” who is an agel that falls in love with a disguised Satan - he takes her to hell, not believing she could truly love him now that she knows the truth, but instead she chooses to stay with him regardless.

In particular the parallel to Hades/Persephone seemed to fit considering this particular quote from Leroux’s novel, “You must know that I am made of death, from head to foot, & it is a corpse who loves you & adores you & will never, never leave you!” Hades was often referred as Lord of Death since people feared speaking his actual name.

My foray into the various “Phantom of the Opera” adaptations also enlightened me to other aspects of parallelism & details that, as a child, I had not thought of until now with an adult perspective.

Fantasy vs. Reality…

In “Beauty & the Beast”, the ultimate reward for Belle in loving the Beast for who he is (not what he is) in the end, is that he transforms back into his handsome Princely self. As a children’s story B&B gets the message across; that beauty is more than just skin deep, teaches lessons of seeing beyond the obvious, acceptance & tolerance. But the ending is the real fantasy, the lie as it were, b/c in the real world the Beast would not become a Prince again. The real reward for Belle in reality would simply be the Beast’s love, not an alteration in his physicality. These fundamental changes in childhood stories are true within the concept of tales like “Beauty & the Beast” in comparison to whether we’re looking at the story with a child’s gaze or through an adult’s POV. There’s the fantasy we interpret as children, then there’s the reality we see as adults! This comparison is reflective between various adaptations of “Phantom of the Opera” & “Beauty & the Beast.” The fantasy being B&B where the beauty is rewarded for loving such a creature by him transforming into a handsome Prince, while the Phantom stays as he is.

Fantasy Love…

In “Phantom of the Opera” Raoul is referred to as “foppish boy,” that “insolent boy” but a boy all the same! His youth, education, title & wealth are the very things that most women think of in an ideal man. His overall role in Christine Daae’s life represents the sweetness of childhood. Raoul is, at 1st, presented in a very real aspect: his brief history with Christine, his lac of mystery making him seem normal; there’s no supernatural element to his character. However, as Raoul become a Love Interest to Christine, he’s rendered a sort of fairy-tale quality. The reality being that a man of Raoul’s social standing would likely not be able to/or even think to marry someone of Christine’s much lower social standing (he’s a Vicomte, she’s a mere chorus girl). That particular element gives their “love” a Cinderella” feel rendering Raoul as a sort-of Prince Charming. Erik, the Phantom, is flawed & referred to as the man of the story - he’s older, wiser, more experienced (even if those experiences have made him bitter). Leroux even calls Erik, “The man’s voice.” Raoul become less of a reality & more of a fantasy love, akin to a Prince Charming in a fairy-talewhile Erik, becomes less of a fantasy throughout the story & something far more tangible; he’s brutal & honestly flawed, an ugly reality of the world.

Each adaptation that I’ve come across seems to present Erik/Raoul to the reader as polar opposites. You have Raoul who Christine sees quite obviously as a real person (he’s not an Angel of Music, he’s not some Opera Ghost), he’s real flesh & blood, a youthful young man. They have some history together which solidifies Raoul’s presence as a normal guy in Christine’s life. There is no air of mystery. Yet, they come from completely different classes of society. Not unlike how Darcy, in reality, would never marry someone of such low social standing as Elizabeth Bennett (”Pride & Prejudice”). That’s the fantasy - the Prince Charming, Cinderella effect of the Raoul/Christine relationship. Where as there is no real social separation between Erik & Christine. Any expectations society gives for Christine to choose Raoul are the very things that make him a fantasy love: wealth, title, handsome, youth, etc. The fantasy itself is the very thing that lends an illusion of realism to Raoul as Christine’s love interest! He’s a fantasy that exists completely under an illusion of realism, IMO!

Christine: Growing Up…

This is where the jumbled various adaptations of a story become harder to separate, in this regard I’m essentially taking in a bit of every adaptation (this reminds me of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” where in the original novel he’s not as handsome as Dracula is later perceived in later adaptations). In Leroux’s novel Christine has only known Erik, her Angel of Music for a few months (though at times it seemed like she’d known him much longer) whereas other adaptations show Erik being in Christine’s life much longer. As a child Christine looks upon Erik with a child’s gaze. 1st as her Angel of Music, seeing him as a literal Angel. Quickly morphing into the guidance of a teacher, & while he still remains her “mon ange” (my angel), he has also become her Maestro. At the same time he’s become the Opera Ghost. With each stage of Christine’s psyche, the illusion of Erik melts away; from Angel, to Maestro, to Phantom, until he is just a flesh & blood man. Where as Raoul remains a representation of Christine’s childhood & their “love” eludes to that youthful mindset - a childhood infatuation that’s as fleeting as the emotions experienced by other teenagers. Not unlike the comparative romantic relationship in “Gone with the Wind” (Scarlet clings to Ashley who represents life before the war, the last part of her childhood, of a time long gone; while ignoring her very real feelings for Rhett which represent something far more lasting & mature. You have Ashley, the idealist & Rhett, the realist). Raoul represents Christine’s past, her childhood idealism; Erik represents Christine’s growth b/c he’s seemingly a part of every phase of her life.

Christine’s Early Childhood - Raoul (varies with each adaptation)

Christine’s Later Childhood - Erik as her Angel of Music.

Christine’s Teen Yrs. - Erik as he Angel but also now taking on the role of Maestro, her teacher, while also being the mysterious Opera Ghost (something darker, more mysterious than the purity of an Angel).

Christine’s Adult Yrs. (moving into womanhood) - Erik, the illusions have fallen away & he’s now just a flesh & blood man!

The role Raoul seems to chiefly represent in Christine’s life is her past, there’s not much growth in their relationship beyond Raul wooing her. B/c her relationship with Erik changed over the yrs. it represents real growth in character & personality for Christine which is the reality of growing up. By choosing Raoul, Christine chose the illusion of living her life through her childhood & is therefore stuck in the past. Raul essential hinders Christine’s growth as a character, IMO.

Sexuality…

Erik (the Phantom) is a lot like Severus Snape - an unlikely sex symbol of the story! He’s also acts as a sort of metaphor for Christine Daae’s evolution in discovering her sexuality.

The fundamental growth of Christine moving away from her childhood & into a woman is connective to how Erik encompasses various phases of her life. When Christine looks upon Erik as an Angel it represents the purity of a child’s mind. He’s her friend, her companion of comfort that get’s her through the loneliness after her father’s death (the Musical & 2004 film). When he grows into her Maestro - her teacher - he becomes her confidant, a source of wisdom (this is especially prevalent in the Charles Dance mini series). As she grows into her teen yrs. & Erik becomes the Opera Ghost, he represents something darker, more mysterious in nature; he’s no longer the pure Angel. By the time Christine sees Erik, the flesh & blood man, he’s fallen in love with her which shows his representation of Christine moving her mindset from the fantastical (Angel/Phantom) to something more real (a man). This development, I feel, is the opposite of Raoul. Raoul starts off seeming realistic & morphs into the fantasy of a sort-of Prince Charming, showing that Christine looks upon Raoul the way she would as a child, as a fairy-tale ending. Whereas Erik starts out as something unreal/otherworldly (Angel/Phantom) later becoming something tangible & real. It shows how with Raoul, Christine moves backward but with Erik she moves forward into adulthood - womanhood (though, that’s just my interpretation).

That moment of adulthood is when Erik reveals himself to being a real man & takes Christine down to his lair for the first time. (Leroux) “The moment she took his offered hand she was no longer a child.” In the musical, this is shown in the song “Music of the Night” in it’s purely sensual nature & tone of the song where we see Erik caress & holding Christine repeatedly throughout the scene. Many speculate that this strongly hinted that Christine & Erik were actually lovers in the most intimate sense, given that during that time period what differentiated between being a girl & being a woman was the marriage bed. Both the quote & song hint at a deeper connection between the 2.

This is reflective throughout much of Christine’s relationship with Erik. In the musical, the songs become more sensual in nature & far less metaphorical. One theory I found was the speculation that “Music of the Night” was metaphorical to Christine loosing her virginity. Interesting.

The song “Past the Point of No Return” is a bit more blatant in its lyrics if still a bit poetic in how it addresses the concept of physical/sexual pleasure. The fact that it’s a duet between Erik/Christine further shows a more sexual nature to their relationship. It’s the opposite of the duet shared between Raoul/Christine “Say you need me…” which is far more innocent in nature & tone. Where as the songs/scenes between Erik/Christine radiate passion! In “Love Never Dies” adaptation, the song “Beneath a Moonless Sky” is downright blatantly descriptive of the sexual intimacy between Erik/Christine (no longer metaphorical).

As little girls we’re fed stories, fairy-tales of gentle love. Even books like Twilight capitalize on the interpretation of young love as something pure where the teenage male is (rather unrealistically) a perfect gentleman & other books where the man is the only one perceived as having a sexual nature. “Phantom of the Opera” in its own way shows that women are sexual creatures, too. By representing the innocence of her childhood, Raoul is in a way repressive of Christine’s sexuality while Erik enables her to embrace certain desires.

What furthers the sexualization of Erik - whether it’s when he’s Christine’s Angel…

her Maestro…

the Opera Ghost…

or just the ostracized, scarred, tormented, isolated flesh & blood man, Erik…

- is the fact that throughout various adaptations of the story there is a great deal that appeals to popular erotic fantasy.

There’s the eroticism of the Phantom’s aesthetic in adaptations like: Webber’s Musical, the Charles Dance Mini Series, the 2004 film, even the poetic prose of Susan Kay’s novel lends a romanticized interpretation of the character: He’s tall, dark, mysterious with an edge of danger. And in terms of physicality, the Phantom is far different from that of Raoul. While Raoul would likely be a handsome athletic man for the time period, he is also what was considered the typical handsome, the typical athlete. Males in society within Raoul’s social class were physical in that they likely had formal hunting parties (ever watched Downton Abbey?) & knew how to fence. But his wealthy likely meant he never had to do any form of real physical labor. In the Charles Dance mini series, ‘04 film, Webber’s Musical, & a novel by Fredrick Forsyth, the Phantom is decidedly more physical: from building & adjusting the Opera House’s architecture, roaming around the Opera House in unlikely places (climbing onto the rafters), not to mention how he moves large pieces of furniture like an organ all the way down to his lair; the Phantom’s backstory as an assassin in Persia! He is very much an active man who’s dealt with physical labor & hardships his whole life & therefore has a sense of strength that Raoul’s luxurious lifestyle would probably NOT enable him to have.

Let’s not forget that enigmatic mask of his!

Not to mention the cape!

And of course the sexualization of the student/teacher-protege/mentor relationship!

Yet, despite all the illusions, the many faces Erik wears, he is far more tangible & real than Raoul. Raoul, who’s personality floats somewhere between entitled brat to nonexistent; Raul, whose entire character is defined by his wealth, his good looks & his past with Christine. Where as Erik, the Phantom has a backstory, a tortured life that makes him the man he is now. Erik who is ever changing & complex in personality & character no matter how enigmatic he’s portrayed feels far more real. Even down to how people treat him & the cruelties he’s endured simply b/c of what he looks like is a reality of our world!

As for the love Erik has for Christine - in Leroux’s novel Erik seems consumed with loneliness & desperate for companionship which makes his feeling for Christine appear obsessive in nature. Though, even at the end they are both moved to tears & Christine shows him great compassion. It’s possible that the lack of human contact that Leroux’s Erik has endured is parallel to that of extreme isolation which can psychological alter a person’s sanity. So, is it the abuse he’s faced throughout his life, the horrors he witnessed in Persia, or his isolation that has made insane? Perhaps all three in Leroux’s novel.

In other adaptations Erik’s love is portrayed as something far more pure. He loves Christine for her talents (singing, ballet, artistry) & not her physical beauty like Raoul. As a woman, I can’t tell you how annoying it is when people, men in general, comment on my looks. When someone tells you you’re pretty/beautiful, your looks aren’t something you really have control over (genetics), therefore the compliment falls flat a lot of the time. Where as if you compliment someone for their accomplishments, something they’ve worked hard for, it’s far more meaningful. The relationship between Erik/Christine in various adaptations appears to be built on companionship, trust, respect, the love of friends, the love of student/teacher, romantic love, the appreciation they have for each other’s talents, & at times their own mutual loneliness (Erik in his solitude & Christine in the sadness of her father’s death). The Raoul/Christine relationship many times focuses on how beautiful Raoul thinks Christine is. In the 1990s TV mini series adaptation starring Charles Dance, the Phantom tells Christine that Raoul is not worthy of her b/c, “He comes to the opera for the wrong reasons. He come for the sake of pretty faces rather than the music.” In a way, much like in “Beauty & the Beast” Belle/Christine at times deal with body image issues. Where as the Beast in B&B, & Erik in “Phantom of the Opera” are both judged for how they look, so are the characters Belle/Christine - both women are seen for their looks by their love interests Gaston/Raoul. Where as in the Musical, for example, Erik seems to focus mostly on Christine’s talents which he later becomes attracted to.

This was essentially my interpretation of “The Phantom of the Opera” in it’s entirety, including the influence of its various adaptations. I theorize with the more sympathetic, romanticized versions of the story mostly b/c my 1st exposure to it was the 2004 film & later Webber’s Musical. I read the book after that & so my mental via of the Phantom was decidedly different to that of what Leroux likely originally intended. To me the film, musical, mini series, & Susan Kay’s novel are the ones that are most influential of how I view the story/characters compared to someone who started out reading Leroux’s book 1st. Which was an entirely new experience for me in terms of how I usually analyze/interpret things b/c I almost always read the original novel before any other adaptation.

What bothers me a lot about dorito fans claiming her “kween” and “the rightful ruler” is that she never do an actual job as a queen? I never saw her holding a paper and a quill, all she does is ride drogon and yell “dracarys”. Tell me again how is the “queen”. At least Cersei did her job!

Exactly, Cersei may not be the best candidate but she does know a thing or two about ruling, although she’s definitely straying from that after her whole wildfire act. Still, it irks me to see Dany stans say she deserves the Iron Throne. You could argue that it wouldn’t matter considering the past rulers we’ve seen managed to keep the realm considerably stable with the help of their counsel but wouldn’t that further reinforce the notion that Dany does not know a thing about ruling by herself? Even Joffrey faced backlash from the people in S2E06, the only difference is he didn’t have the dragons to intimidate people to think twice. What makes her worthy of the throne then? Her gentle heart? Tommen had a gentle heart, he still managed to be manipulated and lost the one thing that mattered to him, driving him to suicide in the process.

Speaking of Tommen, let’s examine the exchange he had with Tywin:

Tommen: “Wisdom makes a good king.”

Tywin: “Yes, but what is Wisdom? […] A wise king knows what he knows and what he doesn’t. You’re young. A wise young king listens to his counselors and heeds their advice until he comes of age. And the wisest kings continue to listen to them long afterwards.”

Preceding the exchange in S4E07 above, Tommen explores ideas of holiness, justness, and strength before finally concluding that “Wisdom makes a good king.” So let’s dissect this further:

Hello! I just stumbled on this blog by complete accident, and it's interesting to read your posts about akechi! I'm sorry if this actually comes of rude or ignorant or whatever, but i'm genuinely curious about life in orphanages in japan. Your akechi seems to be awfully not fond of it, and i guess the same with go with canon akechi actually. What are you thoughts?

OH MY GOSH? im really flattered that you found them interesting, and im more flattered that you actually want to hear my thoughts on such a delicate subject. youre not being rude or anything!!

i very well cant give proper opinions on a subject without laying down the facts first, though, and surprisingly, other than passing mentions and links to an article or two, no one really talked about just how awful the system is in japan, and in turn how it affected goro, so let me talk about the system while adding in my own commentary

WARNING: WERE GOING TO SPOILER TOWN HERE.

Peer communications, queue the eye roll. The only thing good about that class was that you sat next to your best friend, Clay Jensen. You were the one to incite him to put something in his- even though he denies it- crush Hannah Baker’s compliment bag. Compliment bags, you had to admit that the idea was original but you didn’t think that Ms. Bradley had considered the disappointment a student could feel when their bag was empty. It’s hard to believe that anyone wouldn’t receive anything, there are always people here for you, even if you don’t know it. Yet, every day, as you stay longer to watch people check their bags, you see your crush, Zach Dempsey, taking an empty hand out of his bag.

“How is that possible? A popular guy like him, nothing.” You wondered, “If only I were as brave as Clay and build up the courage to leave a note or something.”

You quickly grabbed your bag, and headed towards the door when Ms. Bradley spoke up, “(Y/n)? Why don’t you check your bag?” she asked.

You didn’t know how to answer, “Uh…” you responded.

“Well, since you don’t seem to have come up with a good excuse, I suppose that you will have to see what compliments you have received since the last time you checked the bag.” She urged, gesturing towards the brown bag with your name on it.

Sighing, you walked towards it and dug your hand into the bag. Surprisingly, your hand was met with a small quantity of papers. You grabbed them and took them out, placing them on the table to be able to reorganize them and left with the small stack you had just made.

You unfolded the first paper:

How should I dress for Halloween? I know like (Y/n)! I’ll be a queen cause that’s what you are babe.

                                                                                            Xoxo Jess

You smiled at her cute message and unravel the next paper. Inside was a small doodle of a bear and a cake, immediately, you knew that this was from Clay. Below the drawing was small note making a reference about your love for food. You continued to open all the papers from your friends like Sheri, Hannah and Jeff. They all were very sweet and you made a mental note to place a note in each one of their bags. Finally, there was a paper in which the handwriting was not familiar to you. Inside, there was quote “Whatever you are, be a good one.” -Lincoln. But it was not all, underneath was a short message, I think Lincoln would be proud of me if I were your boyfriend, because I’d be a great one. You laughed softly at the pick-up line and looked to the bottom of the paper for a signature but there was none. You placed all your notes and headed home.

The next morning, you woke up to the sound of your alarm clock. You groaned loudly, not understanding why the universe won’t let you sleep in. You got ready and headed down the stairs for breakfast. You were alone since both your parents were on a business trip. You made yourself breakfast and started eating. Once you were done, you cleared up and left the house to meet Clay’s at his. Together, you left to go to the school. You got there and grunted, you had peer communications. You trudged to the classroom and slumped into your seat as the teacher droned on about how important it was to treat your friends properly, “No really?”.

After what seemed like an eternity, class ended and you went to check your brown bag. There, you found two papers: another drawing from Clay and another letter from the unknown admirer.

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” -Gandhi. I wish to see more love in the world, I can be the change by being your boyfriend.

You grinned and headed to Clay, “Hey Clay, I received these notes in my compliment bag,” you showed him the notes, “do you know who they might be from?” you asked.

He smirked, “A secret admirer (Y/n)? Maybe it’s a certain 6”3 jock…” he eyed Zach and then winked at you, “Or just somebody else, I have literally no idea (Y/n).” he shrugged and you punched him in the shoulder.

“I’m serious! Do you not recognize the writing or something?” You asked, desperate for a lead.

“Nope, sorry (Y/n).”

This was how a majority of your day wen, asking your friends if they knew whose writing was on the paper yet none of them knew anything, whoever this ghost was, he didn’t leave a single lead.

The letters continued coming throughout the week, one per day. Each one of the letters contained a quote with a sweet follow-up. You were getting curious about who this secret admirer was but no one seemed to remember anything about the writing. It was starting to frustrate you but you never gave up. Looking everywhere for the same particular handwriting, in vain. This admirer was a ghost and it was tiring you, the same questions floating through your mind 24/7, “Who is he?”, “Is he a nice guy?” or “What kind of person is he?” … You pondered but your questions when unanswered.

You were in Biology class, doodling the person from today’s quote, Einstein, on your book while half-listening to the teacher. You looked at the clock, you were only halfway through the class when you the teacher’s voice rose, “Mr. Dempsey,” Zach eyes lifted to her, “please write on the board what differentiates prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells, the rest of you,” she turned to the rest of the class, “copy it down once I checked if his answers are correct.”

Zach stood up and headed towards the board. He picked up a pen and drew two columns, writing the name of one of the cells on each side. You straightened, the writing, it was familiar. You took the message you had received today and unfolded it. You lifted it besides the board, the writing was very similar, nearly identical. You finally knew, your secret admirer was none other than Zachary Dempsey. Suddenly, you were overwhelmed with thoughts. It was impossible that nobody knew one of the most popular kids in school’s writing, so how did Zach do it? He knew you better than you thought, somehow, he had anticipated who you would ask and stopped them from revealing anything. He had gone to great lengths to avoid your discovery of his identity, why? It isn’t like the feeling wasn’t mutual, you liked him back. Doubt settled into you, what if it was a prank? Or a dare? You continued writing down everything, seeing the looks your friends shoot looks at you, probably wondering if you had recognized the writing, you acted like nothing exceptional had happened and they seemed to fall for it.

When the bell rang, you headed for Clay to not look suspicious while contemplating how you would make Zach understand that you knew his little secret. At that instant, it hit you. You were going to do the same thing to him, but slightly differently so that he didn’t know it was you.

“(Y/n)? (Y/n)? Earth to (Y/n).” you jumped, a hand was waving in front of your face, bringing you out of your trance, “What were you thinking about?” Clay asked once he saw that you were with him.

“Nothing important, don’t worry.” You waved him off.

“Okay…”

“Sorry, you were saying something before I kinda zoned out.”

At that, Clay started his story about what had happened at the Crestmont the evening before with Hannah. You carefully listened to him until, his story was over and you had reached his house. He invited you in but you politely refused, needing to go home to do your homework and prepare Zach’s little surprise.

Once again, the alarm clock woke you up and your morning routine started again as you dragged your feet out of your bed. You had a slight burst in your step, excited about what you would give Zach. You checked your bag for the small piece of paper and left once you had verified that it was there.

Before your first period, you slipped into the peer communications classroom and placed the piece of paper into Zach’s empty bag. You then left to class, a sneaky smile adorning your face.

For the first time in your life you were impatient for peer communications. When it was time, you rushed to the classroom, thinking that somehow it would come faster. You sat down in your seat besides Clay, looking towards Zach.

During the class, you were someplace else, imagining the different endings things that could happen today after Zach found your note. Your eyes went from Zach to the bags to the teacher, the loop repeating endlessly.

“Miss (L/n)!” you snapped out of your daze, “Bringing your mind to class along with your body would be greatly appreciated.” She said, earning sniggers from everyone.

You blushed and nodded, trying to make eye contact with anyone. Unfortunately, you couldn’t resist looking up and your eyes met Zach Dempsey’s dark eyes, he was smiling, his arm was slung over the back of the chair, allowing a more comfortable position to be able to see you. Immediately, you buried your face in your arms, even more humiliated than before.

After thirty more minutes of peer communications, the bell finally rang. You got up and headed towards your compliment bag. Hurriedly, you grabbed your note and ran out, before Zach got to read his note. You couldn’t resist knowing how he would react so you stayed, your head peeping out of the door frame.

You watched as the tall boy idly chat with Hannah, not feeling any jealousy, knowing that she liked Clay. His shoulders shook in laughter at something Hannah said and they both checked their bags. You saw his eyebrows raise when his fingers encountered your note. Your eyes followed his hands as he unfolded it and chuckle at your little pick-up line and message. He looked around, hoping to find his messenger but, no one was left besides him and Hannah. You ran off, not wanting to be caught when he left the classroom and ruin your plan.

Throughout the day, you observed as he walked around school asking his friends if they recognized the writing. You got a sense of déjà-vu when you saw him going from person to person. You grinned slightly. He had asked most of his friends but hadn’t asked Justin Foley yet. His last hope. You didn’t share any classes with Justin so it was impossible that he knew that it was you. You smile grew even more.

A hand placed itself on your shoulder, “What’s got you so happy?” Clay asked.

“Well, I found my secret admirer.”

Clay’s smile faltered a bit before returning to normal, “Really? Who is it?”

You threw him a skeptical look, “Don’t play dumb with me Jensen.” You shoved him gently, “I know that he’s got you in on it, along with Sheri, Jess and everyone else.”

He was completely found out but, stupidly, he decided to continue with the whole charade, “I have absolutely no idea who and what you are talking about my dear (Y/n).”

“Lose the act Clay. I know that Zach was partnered with you for a History project at the beginning of the year.” You told him, making him lose every excuse he had prepared mentally.

“Fine.” He raised his hands in the air, “You got me. But, you did the same to Hannah by not telling her it was me.” He argued.

“Hannah is not my best friend Clay, you are! But, if you want, I can tell her everything.” You threatened.

His eyes widened, “Don’t, I so sorry (Y/n)! I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”

“Nope.” You grinned as you saw the blue-eyed girl at the end of the hallway, “Hey Hannah!” you waved towards her, “I need to talk to you about something.”

You ran towards her and left an angry Clay behind you. He knew this would not end well because you were tremendously reckless and always kept your word. He groaned loudly, knowing that you were probably scare Hannah off by either overselling or underselling him. You pretty much threw his chances at dating Hannah Baker out the window.

You had told Hannah to meet you at Monet’s at four. You walked inside and saw her ordering a drink. You walked to her and tapped on her shoulder, greeting her.

She turned around, smiling, “Hey (Y/n)! I was just ordering, do you want anything?”

“Yes please. I’ll have a (f/d) please.” You asked the barista, reaching for your cash.

Hannah placed her hand one the arm that was rummaging in your bag, “Don’t worry, I’ve got it.” She smiled, paying the guy, “You’ll just owe me one.” You thanked her as you both headed to a free table with your drinks.

“So, what did you want to talk to me about?” she asked.

“I need you to answer me honestly,” she nodded, “I promise I won’t tell anyone. You like Clay, like in a ‘more than friends’ way. True or false?” you asked bluntly.

Her eyes widened, not expecting that question, “I-uh, I-that’s t-true.” She stuttered.

A grin etched itself on your face, “Great!” you exclaimed, surprising her.

“Next question. Do you know who is placing those little drawings in your compliment bag?”

Hannah cocked her head slightly to the side at the weird question, “No. You know that.”

“Good, good.” You said, slightly creeping Hannah out.

“Well, Hannah Baker, let me explain everything you do not know.” You grinned at her maliciously. And told her everything, spilling Clay’s secrets. During your story, Hannah’s facial emotions varied from excitement to surprise, nearly all of them positive.

Once you were done, she spoke up, “Please tell me this isn’t a cruel prank and it’s the truth.”

You placed your hand on your chest in mock horror. “Firstly, I am shocked that you would believe that I would pull such a horrible prank on such a sweet soul like you. I would only pull a prank like that on somebody like Bryce.” You made a gagging sound, “Secondly, you promised that you would be honest thus, by the law of equality I have promised as such in an unspoken way.” You joked, “No but seriously, I wouldn’t do that to you, I swear that I am telling you the truth.” You assured.

“Okay…” she smiled, “I believe you.”

“You have to go see Clay and tell him you like him back because this game of obliviousness is really annoying me and little Jensen is too chicken to do anything about it.” You both laughed.

“Okay, I’ll do it.” She beamed.

The two of you continued talking about various subjects and found out new things about each other. You spent about an hour growing closer until the door opened and you saw Zach and the rest of the jocks walk in, his eyes looking straight towards you. You looked behind you but there was no one.

Hannah raised her eyebrows suggestively at you, “He’s looking at you (Y/n).” she whispered, smirking. During your bonding, you might have told her about the whole Zach story.

The both of you watched the dark-haired boy tell his friends to order and sit down without him. They did as such and he turned to your table, marching towards you.

Conveniently, Hannah’s drink was empty, she grabbed and said, “Well, I need a refill so, I’m gonna go.” She winked at you and left.

You were still sending daggers at her back when somebody sat in her seat, not somebody, Zach. You looked up, your (e/c) eyes meeting his warm brown ones. He sighed, placing his bag on the ground beside him. He slid a piece of paper towards you and you reached in your pocket, sliding the note you received today towards its author. You both grasped the pieces of paper and unfolded them.

Your eyes met your own writing and you smiled, “How did you know?” you asked smirking slightly.

“Justin saw you peeking through the door frame this morning and when I came today, asking him if he recognize the writing with the context I gave him, he put two and two together and told me.” He replied. You mentally cursed yourself for not looking at your surroundings, “What about you? How did you know?”

“Biology.” You said, “you were asked to write down the differences between two cells, I recognized the writing.” He hummed in comprehension.

You both stayed in silence until you couldn’t bear it, curiosity and doubt got the better of you, “So… Was it a prank?”

His back straightened and his eyes widened, “No! No! Not at all! I meant everything, about being your boyfriend. Listen (Y/n), I think that it’s great that you’re not only beautiful but, smart, independent and so many other things! I really like you (Y/n) and I’d like to be more than friends, if you’d let me.” He looked up at you, hope vibrant in his eyes.

You placed your hand over his, “That’d be great.” You smiled and his eyes twinkled.

He took your hand in his and grinned, “Really?” he asked, not believing that this was really happening.

“Absolutely,” his smiled widened, “but, you have to take me on a date before we make anything official.”

He sighed, glad that it wasn’t some horrible condition you gave him, “How about Rosie’s, tonight?” He offered.

“Pick me up at 7.” You both smiled widely.

“It’s a date!” he said before leaving to get back to his friends.

Hannah returned to her seat, sipping on her newly refilled drink, “Spill. What happened between you and Dempsey?” she asked.

You grinned and told her everything that had happened after she left. Your mind mainly wandering to your date with your crush tonight.

I saw that a while back you wrote about who needs therapy the most in the RFA. Going off of that, since I see this discussed a lot in the fandom, who do you think might have suffer from mental illness? Everyone struggles and is deserving of help. That's obvious and I hope people know that. I just see a lot of different opinions on the subject, and since (with the exclusion of Rika) nothing's ever confirmed in-game, I'd love to get your perspective. Your analyses are so well-done!

This request was a little difficult mainly because I really don’t want to insult anyone or say something wrong that could hurt anyones feelings or such. Therefor I want to preface this by saying that I am, by no means, a professional. I wanted to become a Psychiatrist so I did learn a couple of things on my own, but nowhere near enough to be accurate about everything. I have a couple of ideas what kind of mental illnesses the Mystic Messenger crew might have based on internet research, but as always don’t quote me on this…

|| REQUEST ARE (ALWAYS) OPEN!! ||

Zen =  Body Dysmorphic Disorder or BDD

Honestly I don’t really think that Zen has any mental illnesses, after all you can struggle in life without it being a full blown mental illness, but if I would had to say one that he might have I’d choose BDD. Not all people suffering from BDD are those stick thin girls that see themselves as overweight when looking in the mirror. There are many nuances to every mental disorder, including BDD. Let’s have a look why I think Zen might have BDD:

✓ preoccupation with physical appearance

✓ belief that one has an abnormality or defect in appearance that makes her ugly

✓ frequently looking in the mirror

✗ avoiding mirrors altogether

✓ believing that others take special notice of ones appearance in a negative way

✗ frequent cosmetic procedures with little satisfaction

✓ excessive grooming

✓ feeling extremely self-conscious

✗ refusing to appear in pictures

✗ skin picking

✓ comparing appearance with that of others

✗ avoiding social situations

✓ camouflaging (with body position, clothing, makeup, hair, hats, etc.)

✓ excessive exercise

✓ changing clothes excessively

As I said many times before, I feel like Zen’s excessive narcissism is nothing but a facade to hide that he really just hates his body and himself due to what happened in his childhood. In order to overcome one negative extreme he through himself into another extreme, self-hate to excessive self-love, even going as far as to pursue a career where everyone could and would see him. He constantly talks about his looks, is self-conscious about his albinism, constantly stares at himself in mirrors or phones, knows that people notice his albinism and fears it’s negative, constantly grooms himself, is self-conscious, has an excessive need to compare himself to others, exercises excessively and for his job he constantly has to camouflage and change clothing. Out of all the symptoms for it, Zen sure fits a lot of them.
There is even a good reason why he might have it:

?   having biological relatives with body dysmorphic disorder

✓ childhood teasing

?  physical or sexual abuse

✓ low self-esteem

✓ societal pressure or expectations of beauty

He got teased by his parents and hated by his teacher. He had low self-esteem because of it and then of course societal pressure got added to the mix later on once he became an actor. I’m not sure whether he suffered physical or sexual abuse, although I wouldn’t completely cut out the possibility, if you consider that it was hinted at that his teacher had a thing for him as well as the fact that his parents seemed like the abusive type and he was in a biker gang. I also don’t know whether his parents might have had BDD, but it is a possibility. Either way, looking at all this Zen could be suffering from BDD, although I don’t fully believe he does.

Yoosung = Addictive Personality Disorder

I already mentioned before that I think that Yoosung has quite the addictive personality and look there, the shoe kind of fits. I’m basically 99% sure that Yoosung has some kind of addictive personality disorder or something similar now let’s see why:

✓ Low self-esteem

✓ A tendency to impulsive behaviour

✗ An antisocial personality

✓ Difficulty delaying gratification

✓ A disposition toward sensation seeking

✓ Someone who values nonconformity to an extreme

✓ Someone with a weak commitment to the goals for achievement that are generally accepted by “normal” society

✓ Someone who is tolerant of deviant behaviour

✓ Someone who is socially alienated

✓ Having an increased sense of stress

Basically…almost all of the symptoms fit to some extend or the other. It is undeniable that Yoosung has low self-esteem, something that is mentioned in basically all of the routes. He is very impulsive and never thinks things through, like getting his eye almost cut out by one Saeran Choi, because he just had to safe you right then right now without planning. He barely makes any friends outside of his games and the people he already knew, namely the RFA members, when Yoosungs wants to play he needs to do it instantly without any patience to wait, he has given up on studying in order to pursue his addiction – gaming – tolerates a lot of deviant behaviour going on in the RFA, namely whatever one particular hacker is up to, and despite being a lazy fart who never cleans nor studies nor does care for himself properly he seems to be under constant stress. On top of that he is completely obsessed with the women in his life; first Rika then you. He latches on and is incapable of letting go until something new comes around that catches his attention. All of these are pretty fitting, don’t you think?

♨ Jaehee = Anxiety Disorder ♨

Just like with Zen I don’t really think that Jaehee has any disorders or illnesses in particular, just your every day stress of Korean workplaces wearing her down. However, if I had to pick one that might be fitting it would be Anxiety Disorder. To clarify, I don’t really mean the anxiety most people would picture; being afraid to speak in public etc – as we all know that Jaehee is capable of doing that – but more on the lines of being constantly stressed and on edge:

?  Irrational fears

✓ Muscle tension

?  Chronic indigestion

?  Stage fright

✓ Self-consciousness

✓ Panic, fear, and uneasiness

?  Flashbacks

✓ Perfectionism

?  Compulsive behaviors

✓ Self-doubt

✓ Problems sleeping

✓ Not being able to be still and calm

✓ Dizziness (mentioned in one of the bad endings)

The amount of question marks is precisely why I don’t really think she has it, but potentially could. A lot of those we cannot know for sure, as such things are never explicitly mentioned or even hinted in in the game, but I definitely could see being the case. I’m about 90% sure that Jaehee has compulsive behaviours as well as the kind of flashbacks connected to anxiety disorder. I also believe that while she is able to hold a meeting that speaking in front of people is something she had to force herself to learn and that Jaehee actually has stage fright. As for any physical symptoms I can’t even deduce whether she might have them or not, but as I said I could imagine it. Then again, I’m really not sure and this is all just me thinking of possibilities I don’t really think are true.

Jumin = Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder

This is something I have personal experience with, since I have OCPD. Just as a side note, OCPD is not OCD and has very little in common with what you see OCD being portrayed as in the media. Also, to make something clear, I am not giving my favourite my own disorder to feel connected to him. I feel connected to him, because I feel like he has the same disorder. Jumin is very similar to me, which is why I understand his struggles the best and connect to him. Now enough about me, let’s dig into what OCPD is and why I think Jumin has it:

Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder is characterized by a preoccupation with orderliness, perfectionism, and mental and interpersonal control, at the expense of flexibility, openness, and efficiency.

- may have such difficulty deciding which tasks take priority or what is the best way of doing some particular task that they may never get started on anything.

- prone to becoming upset or angry in situations in which they are not able to maintain control of their physical or interpersonal environment, although the anger is typically not expressed directly. On other occasions, anger may be expressed with righteous indignation over a seemingly minor matter.

-  may be especially attentive to their relative status in dominance-submission relationships and may display excessive deference to an authority they respect and excessive resistance to authority that they do not respect.

- Individuals with this disorder usually express affection in a highly controlled or stilted fashion and may be very uncomfortable in the presence of others who are emotionally expressive. Their everyday relationships have a formal and serious quality, and they may be stiff in situations in which others would smile and be happy. They carefully hold themselves back until they are sure that whatever they say will be perfect.

✓ Is preoccupied with details, rules, lists, order, organization and schedules

✓ Shows perfectionism which can interfere with task completion

✓ Is excessively devoted to work and productivity to the exclusion of leisure activities and friendships

✓ Is overconscientious, scrupulous, and inflexible about matters of morality, ethics, or values

✓ Is unable to discard worn-out or worthless objects even when they have no sentimental value

✓ Is reluctant to delegate tasks or to work with others unless they submit to exactly his or her way of doing things

✓ Adopts a miserly spending style toward both self and others; money is viewed as something to be hoarded for future catastrophes

✓ Shows significant rigidity and stubbornness

Is there really anything I need to explain about this? All of these fit Jumin like a glove tailored for him. There are really only two things that I need to clarify something on. For one we don’t know how Jumin acts about discarding things he has no logical need for, but I feel from the way he treats the pen his father gives him, that said point fits. Despite not needing a golden diamond pen and probably having a million more that work just the same he starts an entire search party to get it back, probably out of sentimental reasons but also because he can’t discard such things. As for the miserly spending style, something most people would disagree with, Jumin doesn’t waste money. He lives in luxury and he does like spending his money, but he doesn’t waste it. The things he buys or pays a lot of money for are practical for the better part; like a nutritionist and gym to keep him healthy. With the money he earns he could live a lot more extravagant than he already does, but he’s not wasteful and exactly like described values money and hoarding it. Other than that, everything else fits perfectly!

☼ Saeyoung/Seven = Major Depression ☼

Honestly guys, does this even need explaining? He’s flunking his depression in everyone’s faces all day, every day and yet no one seems to care. Despite the fact that he doesn’t have just ordinary depression but major depression. I’m talking hardcore bullshit here and rightly so. Let’s break this down once and for all:

✓ Fatigue or loss of energy almost every day

✓ Feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day

✓ Impaired concentration, indecisiveness

✓ Insomnia or hypersomnia almost every day

✓ Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day

✓ Restlessness or feeling slowed down

✓ Recurring thoughts of death or suicide

✓ Significant weight loss or gain

✓ Change in your appetite (not eating enough or overeating)

✓ Low self-esteem

✓ Feeling of hopeless

For a while I was torn between Saeyoung being just depressed or having manic depression aka bipolar disorder. I decided to depression, mainly because his ‘episodes’ of euphoria are mostly fake and don’t really happen in proper cycles. Then again, we only get to know them for eleven days and usually those cycles can take up to weeks when not regulated with the proper medication, so who knows. However, it’s a 100% clear that Saeyoung is majorly depressed. Other than his eccentric chatting behaviour he barely seems to have energy, even the smallest things can break his concentration, he never sleeps, other than his interest in cars he has no other interest or pleasurable activities left, Saeyoung constantly mentions how worthless he is, how guilty he feels over his brother, how hopeless he feels of getting out of where he’s got himself stuck and how he wants to die. As for the significant weight loss, he barely eats but what he eats is horrible junk. He should weight much much more than he does considering his diet, which I put into the same category as weight loss. Therefor Saeyoung shows all the symptoms of a majorly depressed person.

☀ Saeran = Borderline Personality Disorder ☀

For a hot minute I thought about Saeran having depression as well, but I feel like his mental issues go a little deeper and more complicated than ‘just’ depression. Upon researching some of the symptoms he has compared to his twin brother I stumbled over BPD, not to be confused with bipolar disorder (happened to me ones). People with BPD usually experience symptoms like:

✓ Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment

✓A pattern of intense and unstable relationships with family, friends, and loved ones, often swinging from extreme closeness and love to extreme dislike or anger

✓ Distorted and unstable self-image or sense of self

✓ Impulsive and often dangerous behaviours

✓ Recurring suicidal behaviours or threats or self-harming behaviour

✓ Intense and highly changeable moods, with each episode lasting from a few hours to a few days

✓ Chronic feelings of emptiness

✓ Inappropriate, intense anger or problems controlling anger

✓ Having stress-related paranoid thoughts

✓ Having severe dissociative symptoms, such as feeling cut off from oneself, observing oneself from outside the body, or losing touch with reality

Much like with Saeyoung this case of mental illness needs very little explaining. The symptoms speak for themselves, as they perfectly fit to Saeran, all of them. Now some might say that he didn’t show those symptoms as a child and that is true, although I wouldn’t say that his BPD was caused only by what Rika did to him, although that surely played a big part. There are three main reasons that are considered risk factors: Genetics, Environmental and Social Factors and Brain Factors. The environmental/social factor is quite obviously what Rika did to Saeran. Most notable factors in that category are traumatic life events such as abuse (mother then Rika) and/or abandonment (his father then Saeyoung) during childhood. What Rika did to Saeran also works into the brain factors, as her torture probably caused structural and functional changes in his brain that changed his behaviour and way of thinking so drastically. As for the genetics, I actually wouldn’t be so surprised of the twins’ mother had some sort of mental disorder or even BPD that caused her to lash out on the boys like that and in Saeran’s case pass it on. It might even explain why he was sickly as a child while his brother wasn’t. Although that is purely theoretical, the rest isn’t as much. Poor baby…

📷 Jihyun/V = White Knight Syndrome 📷

Now I honestly have to say that I’m not sure whether White Knight Syndrome falls in the mental illness category or not, but it fit so perfectly to V and there was very little else I could have come up with, so I’m putting it into the list. Now what exactly is White Knight Syndrome or what are the symptoms:

✓ Fears emotional distance

✓ Is very emotionally vulnerable and sensitive

✓ Has a tendency to idealize the partner

✓ Has an extreme need to be viewed as important or unique

~  Tends to be self-critical or reactively blames, devalues, and manipulate others

In relationships:

✓ Is attracted to a needy partner or a partner with a history of trauma, loss, abuse, or addiction

✓ Fears being separated from the partner, losing the partner’s love or approval, or being abandoned by the partner

✓ Engages in controlling behaviour, often under the guise of helping

✓ Maintains or restores connection with the partner by being extremely helpful or good

✗  Responds ambivalently to the partner’s success

✓ Describes a sense of “oneness” with the partner

✓ Fails to recognize the partner’s manipulative behaviours

✓ Is seduced by the sexual or dramatic behaviour of the partner

✓ Evokes strong feelings in the partner in order to avoid his or her own emotional discomfort

✓ Maintains hope for a gratifying relationship by denying the reality of the partner’s issues

I mean…hello V? Other than the point about his response to his partner being ambivalent everything fits perfectly. That is precisely why I find it so irritating when people describe his feelings towards Rika as love. No, V did not love Rika or at least not in a healthy way. He loved her instability and he was obsessed with the idea of saving her. So much so that he was willing to manipulate, devaluate and fuck over the rest of his friends. The only reason I used ~ on that particular point is because while he is self-critical as well, he never reactively blames anyone but himself. Frankly rightly so. Anyone who thinks that V is in any way innocent is wrong. He didn’t stop Rika. Despite knowing of her plans all along he never once did anything to stop her and therefor he is almost as much at fault as Rika is. In fact my American law he would be charged with accessory to a hefty crime amongst other things earning him a couple of years in prison, just saying. I’m sure his White Knight Syndrome played into why he did what he did, but that doesn’t make him any more innocent nor excuses what torture other people were put through because he put Rika first and did nothing to stop her.

@wacheypena - happy birthday, and I hope you feel better! Have some crackfic coldflash.

“You’re going to what?” Len says incredulously. His incredulous voice is very, very flat.

Barry winces.

“I’m going to throw you and your paramour to your doom –” the guy starts.

“No, no, skip that part,” Len says. “Especially the bit about the paramour, no one says that anymore. Get to the part about the birds.”

“Your doom will come at the hands of –”

“Beaks of,” Len says, because he can’t help himself that way.

Barry bangs his head against the wall of the cell. It’s fine, it’ll heal.

“- at the beaks of my beloved feathery friends, my attack birds –”

“You trained attack birds as your gimmick,” Len says. “Consider your application to the Rogues preemptively denied.”

“Must you taunt the supervillain?” Barry asks hopelessly.

summary: “I tried being romantic annoying and throw pebbles at your window, but you opened it at the wrong time, and oh my gosh are you okay?? IS THAT BLOOD?“ x

Will walked down the sloop of the sidewalk, hands in pockets as the light cool breeze nipped at his neck. He kicked at the scattered stones that littered the squared pavement, finding satisfaction in every crunch of the occasional dried leaves.

Fall was reaching it’s peak, and Will found it the season that he felt most comfortable in. In Summer it would be too hot to take walks in the evening time, in Winter the roads would be full of blankets of snow and salt and In Spring the allergies would kick in and the trees that he found comfort walking underneath would soon become unbearable to be near.

This season of slight chills and fallen leaves was the time of the year where he could take hour long walks in the evening with the five o’ clock hue to sort out his mind and go over the events of the day. Mindlessly, he found himself walking near the entrance to a certain village of houses.

He’d never gotten along with his classmate, Nico Di Angelo. They were the two people who glared at each other from other parts of the room for no particular reasons. They purposefully walked into each other, slamming shoulders. They’d always roll their eyes and mutter something under their breath every time they were forced to talk.

Recently, however, the nonsense tension had simmered into something different. Ever since they were forced to be partners on a one week long field trip and had inevitably gotten to know each other better, they found themselves merely glancing at each other in class before they’d look away, flustered. Their hands would brush against each other all the time now, and they’d find the dumbest excuses to argue just to be interacting with each other.

It confused Will, but also made butterflies in his stomach every time he’d think about the brooding kid. Just thinking about Nico in front of the entrance to where he lived was enough to make Will’s cheeks flush a faint red, but he blamed it on the light cold.

A beat, and Will had the random urge to walk over to his house and make up some stupid excuse to call out to Nico. Then he realized it was a pathetic idea and hesitantly walked forward achingly slow. He tried to return to kicking stones and letting his brain wander but his mind was focused strictly on a certain pair of chocolate brown eyes and raven black hair.

The Right Partner Pt. 1/? Chris Evans x Reader

Summary: You’re in a tough spot with your boyfriend, but a random Disney duet with your neighbor may be exactly what you needed to distract yourself.

Warnings: Cheating? / light swearing / BUT ALL OF THE FLUFF

Word Count:  2,779

Your phone lay dormant to the left of you on the nightstand. With the lights being off, your eyes adjusted to the darkness surrounding you. Your blankets had been tossed and twisted around while you fought to make yourself sleep. Across your exposed skin, the chill of the late April air almost caused goosebumps on your legs. Your boyfriend, Rick, and yourself had gotten into a huge fight. Now you were riled up, madder than hell, because you knew he was sleeping like a rock and not giving a damn about your guys’ relationship. You had been together for seven months already, but you finally called him out on his apathy towards actually strengthening your relationship instead of letting it stay as immature as it was at the beginning, and you were pretty sure that he has been seeing someone else on the side, which was what started the fight in the first place.

Or, now that you thought about it,  he was probably off with his side chick while you cursed yourself for caring too much. You groaned as you rolled over to see your clock, reading 1:02 am. With a hard sigh, you pushed yourself from your bed and marched through your apartment to flip on the lights by your couch and TV. You needed some simplicity to calm your head, so you scanned through your more brightly colored DVD cases, smiling when your hand went straight for Sleeping Beauty. It was your favorite princess movie and you prided yourself on how well you sang along. It was your hidden talent, since no one else seemed to think your ability was as grand as your old choir directors. So, you kept the singing to the confines of your car, or alone at home. You watched intently as if for the first time, gaping at Maleficent (your favorite villain) and her style. In the forest scene, as Aurora is telling her animal friends of her dream man, you stand to your feet and begin to spin and sway to the music. Forgetting that it was now coming up on 2am, you began to sing along as well.
