Idk if somebody else already talked about this but I'm so emo and need to share. Everyone knows the "I got you, buddy" scene from season 3 followed by the Fond Look™ Keith gives Lance but I just rewatched season 1 and Shiro says the EXACT same thing to Keith near the end of the last ep. Lance saying that proves to Keith that Lance is his friend now. Like you don't say "I got you, buddy" to someone you tolerate you say that to a friend you'll stick by through anything I have so many feelings rn

he actually says that to keith in issue #2 of the comics, as well!!!! the comics take place directly after episode 8 of season 1 :)

let me tell you why maggie is the best thing to ever happen to alex, in case you don’t already know. maggie walks in to alex’s apartment with questions, and alex doesn’t even so much as look at her before she starts crumbling. maggie doesn’t have to ask what she needs because she already knows. just like she knew exactly what to say (and what not to say) when alex came out. just like she knew there was more going on when alex broke it off after supergirl went missing. maggie doesn’t have to ask to know that alex will keep drinking, if only to drown in whiskey instead of her tears. because maggie knows alex, and she’s always there, always listening, always comforting, and being exactly what alex needs.

Things you should know about each of your characters

These are what I would consider to be the most basic, bare-bones questions of character creation.

  • What would completely break your character?
  • What was the best thing in your character’s life?
  • What was the worst thing in your character’s life?
  • What seemingly insignificant memories stuck with your character?
  • Does your character work so that they can support their hobbies or use their hobbies as a way of filling up the time they aren’t working?
  • What is your character reluctant to tell people?
  • How does your character feel about sex?
  • How many friends does your character have?
  • How many friends does your character want?
  • What would your character make a scene in public about?
  • What would your character give their life for?
  • What are your character’s major flaws?
  • What does your character pretend or try to care about?
  • How does the image your character tries to project differ from the image they actually project?
  • What is your character afraid of?
  • What is something most people in your setting do that your character things is dumb?
  • Where would your character fall on a politeness/rudeness scale?

I cannot stop thinking about the last ~15 minutes of Big Little Lies, and how it was about communication between women and deliberately cutting men out.  For one thing, it is almost completely silent– sound only returns at the request of the female detective, who is also the one who picked up on the inconsistencies (or rather consistencies) of their stories.  For another thing, major reveals happen without any dialogue at all.  We see Bonnie piecing together the danger oozing from Perry, we see Jane’s horror at discovering her rapist, and then we see Celeste and Madeline put the whole thing together.  Even Renata–the woman most excluded from their group– picks up that something’s wrong.

All without a single word.

It’s silly, but it reminded me of being in sixth grade.  The boys in our class noticed that the girls had a tendency to look at each other when one of them said something dumb, and pretty soon any sort of sideways-look between girls got a loud round of Mr. S they’re talking with their eyebrows again! accusations.  The boys were annoyed (playfully annoyed, but annoyed nonetheless) that the girls had figured out a way to talk in class without actually talking.  We told them they could do it too, but they all stubbornly insisted that wasn’t possible.

Thinking back on that, it strikes me how much of female communication is nonverbal, largely because it has to be.  Women are socialized not to make a fuss, to be quiet, to not take up too much unnecessary space.  This pressure (along with the emphasis on the importance of women taking care of feelings and emotions) creates a quiet sub-language, a code that is not exactly hard to break unless you insist on seeing women as other.  It’s in the look women share when a man catcalls one of us on the street, when we shift to make space for a woman to sit down on the bus because there’s a guy standing just a little too close to her.  This isn’t some innate ability unique to ciswomen– and again, the code is not at all hard to crack unless you are convinced that women are inherently unknowable– but rather a form of communication female-identified people developed to protect each other.

I saw way too many reviewers say that they didn’t buy Bonnie knowing Perry was dangerous without having her book backstory to inform her (where she’s apparently a child of an abusive father), or arguing that Celeste and Madeline just knowing Perry was Jane’s rapist was a bridge too far, but to me, that was the most organic moment of the series.  Not because women have natural intuition about these things, but because nonverbal communication is a skill women have developed to protect themselves and each other from men like Perry and so having them communicate without ever speaking a word was incredibly powerful.  Without the audience ever once hearing them, these women instantly banded together to protect one of their own– and it was one of their own who noticed.  The male detective basically throws his hands up and writes them off as unknowable, but the female detective is the one who knows the code and thus she’s the one with questions.

Even the last scene was a silent, female-centric haven.  The bad guy is gone but the good guys aren’t there either, relegated to mere sidekicks in a story about female friendship and love.  The audience is left out of their circle too, unable to hear their conversations but able to see their compassion for one another.  They’re talking without words, but we still know what they’re saying.

My favorite thing about that Dadvid hug in the finale is how genuinely surprised David is and his entire reaction after the fact.

Like, everyone expected Max hugging David to end in David squeeling and freaking about it and being so excited, but I’m really glad they did it how they did.

Because David was just completely stunned, and then he gave this smile:

Which is so much better?? Because he was still showing that he was happy Max hugged him, but he also had that calm reaction and didn’t just starting freaking out over it because he knew how important it was that Max actually showed his love and trust in David in that way.

And he didn’t downplay how important of a moment it was and then reacted in a way that both showed his feelings about it and was a reaction that would make Max feel more comfortable about it all.

I’m just….so emotional over this scene…

some of my favourite bits/random thoughts from beauty and the beast (2017)

(Warning: spoilers ahead) (this is long and goes through the entire movie cause i need to talk about it alright

  • the pretentiousness of the prince at the beginning and his face when he handles the rose - amazing face by dan stevens might i add 
  • how the entire castle kinda looks like a rose and when it crumbles whenever the petals fall - that shit was wild man 
  • that the town was actually diverse??? amazing and beautiful
  • WHEN BELLE IS READING AND SHE’S SURROUNDED BY FLOWERS/ROSES 
  • “she hasn’t made a fool of herself to gain my favour. What would you call that?” “Dignity” (same)
  • ALL THE ROSE MOTIFS HOLY FUCK OKAY 
  • that mother fucking groan in ‘belle (reprise)’ that every woman can relate to
  • HOW DOES THIS ENTIRE FAMILY TRUST THE INSTINCTS OF A HORSE AND TALK TO IT LIKE IT UNDERSTANDS EVERY FUCKING WORD? AMAZING AND MIND BLOWING 
  • when cadenza had that ‘oh shit’ moment 
  • maurice trying to act all chill before freaking the fuck out 
  • lets be real - every moment between lumiere and cogsworth
  • “Who are you?” “Who are you?” - same adam 
  • why doesn’t this castle have any railings? like, i understand its a dungeon or whatever….but like,,,safety people???

  • the fact that adam/the beast struggles with having a normal conversation cause he’s an idiot who hasn’t interacted with people properly in yearssssssss
  • the fact that mrs potts is okay with belle leaving. she’s so sweet and i loved her in this
  • WHY DIDN’T LUMIERE LET BELLE EAT AT ALL DURING ‘BE OUR GUEST’? FUCKING RUDE
  • also, the amount of extra lumiere was in this scene? amazing 
  • does the beast sleep in a nest or a bed? like….i have a lot of feelings about this okay

  • The bit where the beast sees belle run away, that sharp exhale of like shock and sadness 
  • in evermore where the beast closes his eyes to go with the line “i close my eyes and she’s still there’ - LIKE, THAT ACTUAL HEAD SHAKE OF HIM REALISING HOW IN LOVE WITH HER HE IS. FUCKING RUIN ME
  • HE WAITED IN THE SAME SPOT HE LAST SAW HER. HE WOULD HAVE WAITED THERE FOREVER 
  • THE WAY THE BEAST’S VOICE IS SO DESPERATE AND SURPRISED TO SEE BELLE AGAIN AND HE IS SO HAPPY TO SEE HER 
  •  “I am not a beast” - YAS BITCH, YOU TELL HIM 
  • also…..adam fucking jumped across the castle to get to belle….goals 
  • the beast was shot 3 times in the back….i mean….tough as shit he is 
  • He just wanted her there, to say goodbye and he’s in love with her and i’m dead inside 
  • HE DIED WITH HIS EYES OPEN, FUCKIG MORBID 
  • when all the servants transformed….i cried 
  • i love dan stevens so i will defend his ridiculous hair until i die 
  • plus that kiss was gold and i loved it 
  • (tho i do wish he had said something to her in that moment, just something) 
  • i loved lumiere and plumette - so cute (but also it should have been lumiere and cogsworth)
  •  that final dance tho….amazing

Nicole telling Jeremy that he’s part of the family is such a beautiful scene because I think Nicole finally realized that she is more than just “Waverly’s girlfriend” and she doesn’t want Jeremy to think he doesn’t belong with them because that’s what she thought about herself all this time.

Ok But for real Taako dropping his disguise spell actually kills me cause you know YOU FUCKING KNOW he was 100% sincere about that shit.  You can hear it in his voice, and it actually breaks my heart a little at how he like, actually sounds a little, unsure? like he genuinely thinks Kravitz might feel differently about him now, because of this.

One of my favourite things about Taako is how he’s got this insecure side that we only rarely see?  He’s so good at keeping it hidden, pretending like he’s this endless well of confidence, but then you get these little things, here and there. I’m worried nobody else will have me and him immediately glamouring his changed appearance in Wonderland, and so this is what I look like now, and I just wanted you to know in case that changes anything, for you.

And like, the way he INSTANTLY jumps back into troll mode once he’s got that reassurance.  Like he has to pretend he didn’t just have this very real, sincere moment., has to pretend like it’s just a prank. cause playing it off like a joke is easier than admitting to being vulnerable.  haha that was a actually a test your face is a skull half the time.  

I just.  I have so many feelings about this scene.  I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT TAAKO I LOVE HIM SO MUCH UGH UGHHH

oh my god. just… the ONLY time we see todd and ken interact the entire series, these two characters that have so perfectly fucking mirrored each other at so many different points, and it’s when they both share this look and little shrug like ‘welp guess i should go look after my weird holistic buddy’ and that’s that and it’s like this pure moment of understanding. perf

- Peter shooting the fuck out of ego when he revealed what he’d done to his mum

I know all I can do right now is talk about the Renora scene on the airship but can we please talk about the renora scene on the airship? But most importantly..REN’S EXPRESSIONS. 

When he first looks at her, he looks a little unsure but then his face gradually turns into a soft expression. 

It’s like Ren made the realization that he loves Nora (although, he probably realized that earlier when Nora pushed him under the building…or earlier than that but it’s now more apparent that the Grimm that killed his parents is dead and that’s A LOT off his shoulders and mind). 

AND THEN HE STARTS MOVING HIS HAND TO HOLD HER HAND AND UGH THIS SCREENCAP DOESN’T DO ENOUGH TO CAPTURE HIS GROWING SMILE. ONE MILLION BLESSINGS TO THE ANIMATION TEAM FOR SAYING SO MUCH WITH JUST THE TINIEST LITTLE MOVEMENTS OF HIS FACE.

NORA’S INITIAL REACTION IS SO PURE AND CUTE AND EVERYTHING I EVER NEEDED. (And Ren’s face is just…wow…have you ever seen him more serene with the world because I haven’t)

And then Ren puts his hand on-top of Nora’s and Nora holds up his hand and I can just see her examining it like “he really put his hand on my hand”. The way they readjust their hands just kills me in the best way. 

NORA’S EXPR/ESSION HERE IS EVEN PURER THAN THAT LAST ONE AND IT JUST SCREAMS “REALLY?”. Like, she’s looking at him to make sure what’s happening is really happening…that he might have the same feelings for her that she’s felt for him for so many years. 

AND HE JUST CONFIRMS EVERYTHING SHE’S THINKING (AND HE /KNOWS/ SHE’S THINKING) BY GIVING A LITTLE NOD/CLOSING HIS EYES. 

THAT LOOK RIGHT THERE I WILL TALK ABOUT THIS LOOK ALL DAMN DAY, WEEK, YEAR, AND CENTURY. THAT IS LOOK IS LOVE.

I thought this entire scene did an amazing job of developing their relationship and taking it beyond being close friends/crushes with just the smallest details in the animation. A kiss would have amazing and gladly accepted, but I thought their expressions and body language did soooo much more than what a kiss could have done here (besides, there’s plenty more time for kisses in the next volume ;)). 

Staying Productive while Writing

Anonymous asked: “I’m starting a book and whenever I sit down to write I never know what to put down. Do you have any advice for getting focused/getting ideas flowing? Or just getting in touch with what you’re trying to say?”

Sometimes it can be a struggle to get words on the page. This happens to everyone - most often, when we’re rusty or feeling out of practice. Sometimes, we just procrastinate. There’s no rush to write that scene, so why not put it off until tomorrow? We have all been there. 

The short answer on how to avoid getting into this habit is to simply stop. Easier said than done. I’ve been there many, many times. I was there this past week after I stopped writing for about a week to recover from a virus. Here’s a few techniques to get back into good writing habits: 

Start with writing prompts.  Then, don’t work on an ongoing project, either write out something by hand or even just type a short scene spurred by a prompt. This will help get you back into the swing of things and thinking again like a writer. While I find good prompts just about everywhere, my favorites are Deep Water Prompts (@deepwaterwritingprompts) and Writing Prompts that Don’t Suck (@awesomewritingprompts).

thoughts on 13 reasons why:
-worst ending ive ever seen. so irresponsible. my depression literally triggered so badly because of so many irresponsibly shown scenes. i can’t imagine if i had been 14 watching this show and i feel horrible for all the depressed kids watching it
-how are you gonna have a whole show that you claim is about suicide prevention and not talk about depression?
-how are you gonna make your only lesbian character a bitch to make her the scapegoat out of all those horrible people and have the whole cast on your show including the gay characters constantly tell her to come out and make the audience believe she is a coward for being in the closet in 2017
- alex killing himself and the stalker kid with the gun at the end… was just… so irresponsible. you’re left with literally no hope at the end and little explanation/reaction to either of these things. Horrible
-it’s possible to make media like this with sad real topics about what kids are going through and still make it uplifting. i watched perks of being a wallflower 20 times when i was 14 and horribly depressed because it made me feel better. showing the ENTIRE process of her suicide is soooooooooo horrible and triggering i can’t believe all these people are really on social media with their “we did this to prevent suicide” bs like don’t lie!!!!!
