I’ve seen several posts drifting around about why Sousuke puts extra emphasis on the line, “Rin, your friend!” and I just wanted to clarify some things that might have been lost in translation.
I mentioned in another post that it’s because given the context, yes, the line translates to “Rin, your friend,” but what Sousuke was really saying was “Rin, with you” (Rin, omae to), and this speaks so much more to me since the Japanese language is all about subtleties and double meanings.
Sousuke is not only saying that he wants to become true friends with Rin, but he’s also saying that he wants to be WITH Rin. He’s also expressing the fact that he wants Rin by his side, and even if this is the last time they’ll be able to be together, to swim together, he still wants this because Rin means so much to him. He wants Rin to be a part of his life and he wants to be a part of Rin’s.
The way he delivers the line is so heartbreaking (kudos to Hosoyan and his beautiful voice) because it can be interpreted in several different ways, and Sousuke really just wants so much more that he thinks he will never be able to have, perhaps a future with Rin, a future where he will be on the same stage as Rin, a future where they could be together, even though he couldn’t be more wrong.
Kagami-sensei was so kind, even when signing for #29 of a line surpassing 120. Everyone was given the same large card/poster to get signed and yes, that is my name in the top right. My translation of our conversation is as follows:
KS: So are you Japanese?
Me: No, I’m American. Though right now, I live in Japan.
KS: wow! Your Japanese is great.
Me: Oh not really, but thank you very much.
KS: So who is your favorite character?
Me: Definitely Guren.
KS: Ah, I agree. He’s a strong man, ne? A very cool guy for sure (^-^)
Me: Yes. That is why I also like the light novels you write about him.
KS: Really? You read them?!
Me: Of course : )
KS: *handing me my signed card and shakes my hand* How amazing. Thank you so much for your support!
Me: Ah, thank you very much! Take care, sensei.
So ya. The first girl was practically crying while getting it signed, it was precious haha. He had a great sense of humor and took his time for each person, conversing with them while he signed. He also took a picture with a pair of Guren and Goshi cosplayers and posted it on his Twitter, the guy was just as thrilled as everybody else there.
inspire me do me a favor: kiss me until the sun comes up so i have something to write poems about.
i’m tired of writing about places that don’t exist, homes we built and watched burn. i’m tired of pretending that there were no fires; i’m tired of pretending that it doesn’t hurt.
i’m tired of writing letters that no one reads, i’m tired of giving everything to people who don’t love me.
you see things differently when you don’t have home to go back to. a bed is just a bed, an old piano is just cracked black and white keys, a person is just another body with too much potential to ruin you.
so let me love you now, slowly. i am ready to write about something real, something i can prove; i want to write novels about the way you look at me -and baby i can write until your name is inscribed on walls in foreign cities, until the words you say to me are tattooed on stranger’s hearts - but more than anything i want to be able to say that every word i write about you is true.
just give me some time. give me time to figure out how to come back from years of fiction, years of pretend. give me time and i promise, i’ll learn to hold on to the important things and let go of the rest. i’ll learn to breathe without the memories suffocating me.
and then i’ll write, and write, and write; and we’ll never die.
