@anonymousnerdgirl prompted: “Kangaroo Remix: Dr Whale finally allows Gold to give Bae kangaroo care, but Bae has already bonded with Belle. Feeling guilty, she suggests they hold Bae together until he can bond with his daddy.”

“Kangaroo remix: Milah returns and throws a fit on seeing Belle and Gold nursing Bae together. Luckily Gold has been reading up on his parental rights.”

The original Kangaroo fic can be read here. Its remix, Beside The Beating Heart, can be read here.

When Dr Whale finally agreed that Bae had grown enough and was strong enough for his father to hold him, Gold almost didn’t believe his ears. He had spent so long just looking at his son through four little walls that it didn’t feel quite real for him now to be able to hold him properly and feel his scant weight against his chest instead of just stroking him through the incubator’s hand holes. Finally, he was going to be able to hold and comfort his son in the way that Nurse French had been doing for the past few weeks. He would be able to care for Bae as a father should.

Belle was beaming from ear to ear as he came into the neonatal ward that morning and settled himself in his usual chair beside the clear plastic crib. She was just as excited about the momentous occasion as he was; and indeed he had her to thank for it. Without her clandestine kangaroo care, Gold highly doubted that Bae would have shown improvement as rapidly as he had, if he had even thrived at all.

“Good morning, Mr Gold,” she said brightly, drawing the curtains that partitioned them off from the rest of the ward to give them some calm and privacy. “Today’s the day!”

On Jaha

I kind of want to write something because I’m seeing something worrisome in The 100 fandom, and I think we need a reality check.

Many people have issue with Isaiah Washington based on the reasons behind is release from Grey’s in 2006. Those concerns are valid. I think 10 years is enough for his views to have changed, but I understand a sour taste in people’s mouths none-the-less.

My problem is, I’m watching Jaha as a character become the fandom scapegoat of hatred. Every fandom has that character, I understand. I’m not the biggest fan of Jaha’s “John Locke” spiritual journey storyline either. However we need to not forget the importance of Jaha’s character.

Jaha is a black character in a leadership role of a post-apocolyptic society. He was the unequivocal leader of the Ark, and never once did a character cut into his power with a disparaging comment about his race. Jaha lost his son, the main black lead, early on in the show and a lot of his arc has been reconciling that for three seasons.

The 100 does a great job of having a multitude of PoC is varying roles. Afterall, the only faction to be lead by a white male was the Mountain Men who represented the very kind of divine-right imperialism that haunted America’s “founding.” However, Jaha’s place in the show is STILL vitally important.

Jaha’s main story finished. His big first arc completed. In an “ordinary” show, this is when a PoC is written off. Why? Because writers often struggle to come up with a secondary arc for a character that was included originally for token-representation. The amazing writers on the 100 DIDN’T do that. They not only gave Jaha a new storyline, they effectively set him up to bring in the larger Season 3 (or perhaps season 4 set-up) storyline of the City of Light.

Isaiah Washington has made some mistakes in life, mistakes that we can never truthfully know how much he’s changed from. However, we need to make sure that in our crusade of LGBT empowerment, that we don’t throw a capable Black Male Leader character into the “fandom blender” simply because we’re so blinded by one type of representation that we ignore the other.
