Happy New Year!

Kanji: 羊

2015 is the year of the sheep, so here’s the kanji for sheep! It’s based on a picture of a sheep’s face, with horns and everything.

羊 is pronounced ひつじ (hitsuji) on its own and よう (you) in most compounds:

  • 子羊(こひつじ) lamb (子 child)
  • 羊毛(ようもう) wool (毛 hair, fur)
  • 羊肉(ようにく) mutton (肉 meat)
  • 山羊(really weird reading やぎ/yagi) goat (山 mountain)

(Note: The “sheep” zodiac sign, as opposed to just the regular animal, is often spelled 未 (which normally means “not yet”) because zodiac signs are weird that way.)

あけましておめでとうございます! (Happy New Year!)
