“’Women artists.’ There is no such thing—or person. It’s just as much a contradiction in terms as ‘man artist’ or ‘elephant artist.’ You may be a woman and you may be an artist; but the one is a given and the other is you.”  —Dorothea Tanning, born on this day in 1910

Happy 100th birthday, National Park Service!

This week, we join the rest of the nation in wishing the National Park Service, America’s best idea, a very happy 100th birthday!

A little known fact about the National Park Service is that 88 of its 412 units are coastal, Great Lakes and ocean sites. The National Park System protects island parks like Acadia, Dry Tortugas and Virgin Islands, national seashores like Cape Cod, Padre Island and Gulf Islands, and historic sites like Kalaupapa, New Bedford Whaling and Sitka.

More than 30 of these sites are part of the national marine protected area system – the same system that includes the National Marine Sanctuary System. In many places, national parks and monuments are near, adjacent to or overlap with national marine sanctuaries. National parks and national marine sanctuaries have a long history of working together to preserve special places for the education and enjoyment of the American people.

The sanctuary system was founded in 1972, just about a hundred years after the first national park, Yellowstone, was established. But both programs share the same passionate commitment to their communities, nation and planet. All of these places protect our natural and cultural heritage, preserve scenic land and seascapes, maintain areas for science and knowledge, and serve as destinations for the public to visit and enjoy and learn. These are places held in trust for future Americans. Here’s how you can help.

You tie my soul into knots and ask your questions

why not?

why not love you like you deserve it?
why not be there for you when no one
was there for me?
why not hold you when
i needed someone
to be there for me?

You break my heart into
small butterflies and glued
them onto the ceilings and

every butterfly became a star
because of you
every star still shines
because of you
every time i smile it’s
because of you

There’s something about us, darling

when I started to make friends online

you were among the few
to make me feel at home
you were near the roses
to make me feel less alone
you were surrounded by waterfalls
to make me breathe with bad lungs

Something about us
that I could love
Something about us
that I have come to write
Something about us
that feels more than right
Something about us

us, old souls
us, old souls we know
us, old souls never learned to let go
us, old souls love with new hearts

Something about you
and the way you break

Something about me
and the way I give

Won’t you smile, my dear?

I know
you love

I know
you still love

It is our curse to be that way forever. We won’t always be happy. We won’t always be pure. We won’t always be innocent. We won’t always be perfect. We are the cure but also the cough. We are the sunny day, but when it rains, we forget the day and become the gloom. When the moon eats the stars and cries alone.

The color of your eyes,
the trees die every autumn
just to say, I miss you.

Come back home.

The color of your smile,
it won’t always be red–

you love like me and I love like you
we made clocks laugh because

“time heals all wounds…”

the longest running joke for all poets

I ran out of hands to hold my grandfather clock back into your swaying eyes because we lost the trust we placed into their hearts.

I know there’s something about you
that I’ll always love

if you cry alone on your bedroom floor–

know that somewhere I’m crying too

—  something about us

“I have a problem when people say something’s real or not real, or normal or abnormal. The meaning of those words for me is very personal and subjective. I’ve always been confused and never had a clearcut understanding of the meaning of those kinds of words.”

Happy 58th birthday Timothy Walter “Tim” Burton (°August 25, 1958)

A very Happy 100th Birthday to our National Parks! To mark the happy occasion, we’ve animated some of the stereoscopes that P. S. du Pont brought home from Yellowstone National Park as souvenirs. Clockwise, these are the Castle Geyser, the Bee Hive Geyser, and the humbly-named Economic Geyser

These stereoscopes, created by Frank J. Haynes, are from the P. S. du Pont Longwood photo collection, in Hagley’s Audiovisual Archives.

you are the first dream of my soul, and from that dream i hope will come all other dreams, a lifetime’s worth.

for @dawncourt, happy birthday clara ♡

H a p p y  B i r t h d a y, my love!

You turned the big 4-0 this year, and what an incredible year it has been. From the beginning we were amping up and getting ready for the your premiere of, The Legend of Tarzan. We watched all the interviews, we saw all the press, and we oogled over the many glorious photos. There was so much to look forward to! When the release day finally came, we all flocked to the theater to see you take on the big screen. You absolutely killed it in your role as Tarzan! Seeing it in 3D certainly didn’t hurt. ;) You did a fabulous job, and I couldn’t be more proud of you. It was so exciting seeing you as the lead and watching your name come across on the screen during the credits in big letters. Through the Tarzan mania, we also were getting news on your other projects, War on Everyone and Big Little Lies. I can’t wait to see those! It’s been such an exciting year. You’re now enjoying your time in Sweden, and I’m glad you’re able to relax a bit. You always look so happy when you’re back home with your friends and watching a Hammarby game. (: There’s talks of a new project, so get ready everyone! We still have a lot more to look forward to. This year isn’t over, yet. I can’t wait to see what next year brings for you. You deserve it all. Thank you for all that you do, and for continuing to be your adorable, silly, goofball self. I wish you the happiest of birthdays!! <3333
