Hi everyone!

This is an illustrated guide I made as part of my co-admining work at The Middle Eastern Feminist on Facebook! It will be published there shortly.
The technique that is displayed here is a genuine one used in psychology - I forgot the name and couldn’t find it again so if you know about it, feel free to tell me!
Some could say: “Yes but you can use that technique for instances of harassment other than Islamophobic attacks!”, and my reply is: Sure! Please do so, it also works for other “types” of harassment of a lone person in a public space!!
However I’m focusing on protecting Muslims here, as they have been very specific targets lately, and as a French Middle Eastern woman, I wanted to try and do something to raise awareness on how to help when such things happen before our eyes - that way one cannot say they “didn’t know what to do”!
I’d like to insist on two things:
1) Do not, in any way, interact with the attacker. You must absolutely ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked!
2) Please make sure to always respect the wishes of the person you’re helping: whether they want you to leave quickly afterwards, or not! If you’re in a hurry escort them to a place where someone else can take over - call one of their friends, or one of yours, of if they want to, the police. It all depends on how they feel!

For my fellow French-speakers: I will translate it in French and post it on my page as soon as I can :)

Please don’t hesitate to share this guide as it could push a lot of people to overcome bystander syndrome!!

Lots of love and stay safe!

PS: I you repost this cartoon of mine on twitter or instagram, please add me in the post so I can see it, with @itsmaeril :)

Some Pokémon Go information

This turned out a little long so I’ve bolded main points for TL;DR skim readers.
This post covers some current issues and some beginner tips.

As of typing (7/7/16), Pokemon Go has been released in Aus, NZ, US, and JP.

  • The game does not work on Windows OS, or Android versions older than Lollipop.
  • You need GPS location tracking enabled on your phone, as well as a constant stable internet connection. The GPS is a major battery drain.
  • The AR cam decimated my Samsung Note 4′s battery in minutes, disable it for more play time.
  • Data usage is minimal, but more Data is used when battling Gyms from my observance.
  • You can sign up with either a Google Account (or whatever Apple use) or a Pokemon Trainer Club account. Right now Trainer Club is having periodic connectivity issues. (“Unable to Authenticate.”)
  • When starting the game, you’re offered a “starter Pokémon”, its 100% preference as you can catch starter Pokémon later.
  • After capturing your “starter”, you enter your username. Alphabetical/Numeral Characters only, no spaces, Names must be Unique. They cannot be changed, currently, if ever.
  • The game must be actively open for it to find Pokemon, but you do not need to be staring at the phone. Stay safe and be alert of your surroundings, your phone will vibrate if something pops up near you.
  • The “Nearby Pokemon” tab seems to double up as a tracker, tap a “nearby pokemon” in the list, Footprints indicate its distance, and the tab pulses more as you approach the nearest/targeted Pokemon.
  • Small towns have no shortage of Pokestops and Gyms, but residential areas understandably have very few.
  • Catching Pokemon is simple, you start with ~50 Pokeballs, you gain many more from Pokestops, you can carry a limited number of combined items (350) without bag upgrades. Do not buy Pokeballs from the cash shop, they are essentially an infinite free resource.
  • Pokestops go Purple when used, the cooldown is incredibly short but the cooldown does not reduce if you stay near the stop.
  • Battles are not explained, at all. Tap the opponent Pokémon to launch a “Fast Attack”, and accumulate charge for your Strong “Hold” attack. Swiping your Pokémon to dodge attacks is very important.
  • Teams are “Instinct” Yellow, “Mystic” Blue, and “Valor” Red. There is no benefit to joining a specific team, just pick the one you want/agree with.
  • A Grey Gym is unclaimed, simply deposit a Pokemon to defend it and claim it as your own. Warning: Deposited Pokemon cannot be withdrawn from the Gym until it is defeated by the opposing team, avoid depositing your strongest Pokémon when defending Gyms.
  • At a Friendly Gym, you can battle your own defending Pokémon (and the Pokémon fellow teammates have deposited) and give your Gym more Prestige. Prestige is essentially the “health” of your Gym, and if the opponent teams reduce it to 0, the Gym becomes unclaimed. You may struggle to train if you deposited your strongest Pokémon.
  • At a Rival Gym, your goal is to defeat as many of the Rival Pokemon as possible. Your 6 Selected Pokemon will be allowed to assist you in battle, but only two may faint. You may switch at any time.
  • Pokémon defeated in a training session are reduced to 1 hp and can be healed with a Potion, however Pokémon defeated while battling an rival gym become fainted, and a Revive must be used. These items can be obtained at Pokestops from level 5 onwards.
  • You can challenge a Gym as many times as you are able.
  • The Strongest Pokemon in the Gym is the one sat atop the tower on the Map.
  • I do not know if Eggs are Pedometer related or distance related, but you should get off your lazy ass and walk because its good for you. Some lovely Tumblr users have informed me that it has been said Egg counter is Distance calculated with a speed cap, which is great for accessibility! Still, if able, walking is good for you. It took me approximately 7000 steps to hatch a 5km Egg.
  • YOU MUST INCUBATE AN EGG IN ORDER FOR IT TO HATCH. You are given one Incubator to start with unlimited uses. You can buy more, but they break after hatching 3 eggs.
  • Evolution is not level/CP based. They use Candy to evolve. Candy Evolution requirements vary. Pidgey needs 12, Spearow needs 50.
  • Eevee Evolve Randomly, according to screenshots.
  • Each Pokemon gives 3 candy of its species upon being caught, 6 if hatched. You can power up a Pokémon’s CP using its candy and “stardust.”
  • Magikarp makes me cry.

Mystic Messenger - Heart Raising Guide

Hey guys! So I finished getting all the good endings in Mystic Messenger, and since this type of mobile otome game has a different system than any others I’ve played, I thought it might be a good idea for those who feel confused by the new mechanics. Because most of the game’s setting takes place in a messenger app, there are A LOT of choices so it would be kind of hard to list every single correct answer. There’s currently no sort of indication to see how much you’ve raised a certain character’s affections. However, after playing one route, I realized it’s easy to choose the right answers that gives you each character’s hearts after finding out more about their personality. This guide will mainly discuss how to gain hearts from a certain character to ensure you will be on the route of your choice and get the good ending. If you want to know more about the basic mechanics of the game @otomesapphic has kindly made a guide which you can find here. If you need answers for the guests e-mails, @glassnorouyadeunazuku‘s guide is right here :) Spoilers for when you reach a character’s main route will be under the Day 5 through Day 11 section :)

Day 1 to Day 4 are the days you really need to focus on if you want to play a specific character before the others. Once Day 4 ends, whichever character has the most hearts will be the route you end up on. You will see their picture underneath Day 5 to Day 11 in the chat room section to know whose route you are on. Before I get to choosing the right answers to gain hearts, you need to first know everybody’s heart colors.

  • Jumin - Purple
  • Zen - Gray
  • 707 - Red
  • Yoosung - Green
  • Jaehee - Orange

Every time you get the right answer for someone, a heart will briefly pop up on the screen. If you pick a bad answer for a character, a broken black heart will show up indicating that you lowered their affection for you. Some character’s hearts are extremely easy to get, so if you really want a specific character’s route first, avoid picking good answers for the rest of them. Alright now here are some tips for how to pick the right answers for everybody. These apply to the chat rooms, text messages, and phone calls:

  • Jumin - Jumin loves his cat Elizabeth 3rd and cats in general, so if he starts talking about cats just agree with him. Agree with him about money, take his side with his childish quarrels with Zen or when he’s bossing Jaehee around, and it’s a little subtle but he’s actually very interested in modern internet slang so don’t be afraid to choose informal answers towards him from time to time since he seems to lowkey like it lol. He also likes confident women, so always pick answers that make you sound modest and smart (thank you @pandamathers for mentioning that!)
  • Zen - Just pick the answers that will boost this narcissist’s ego haha. Flirt back with him, take his side whenever he’s quarreling with Jumin, and be supportive towards him and his career.
  • 707 - He’s literally the definition of internet troll/meme lord. Play along with him every time. If he’s trolling you, troll him back. If you do that every time he’s definitely the second easiest person to raise hearts with. However, if someone’s life is actually in danger, be serious and encourage him to do his best.
  • Yoosung - The easiest person to raise hearts with no joke. He’s like a cute puppy who immediately takes a liking to you. Really all you have to do is just be nice to him, take his side when everyone is bullying him, give him good advice, and be his voice of reason when he gets out of hand. You literally have to be trying hard if you don’t want to get his route.
  • Jaehee - Sympathize with her if she’s stressed about work or when Jumin is bossing her around. Also feel free to fangirl about Zen with her, but make it clear that you’re only his fan and you have no romantic interests towards him. She’s kind of the straight man out of all the characters, so picking the reasonable, level-headed answers will help.

Those are basically all the hints I can give you to pick the right answers in the common route. I know it may seem confusing at first, but trust me, once you see the answer choices it will be pretty obvious which one to pick. If you need help on a certain one, feel free to message me and I will try my best to help you!  Also please message me if you want to add any tips, anything would be greatly appreciated :D

The next section is going to be how to pick answers for whichever character’s route you’re on from Day 5 to Day 11. Since these days are where the plot really starts to develop, there may be a few spoilers below, so I would highly recommend reading below only when you’ve reached their routes. Also, make sure to save a lot in case you’re trying to get the bad endings as well. Day 4, 7, 9, and 10 are days the route will branch off, meaning those are your chances you can try for a bad end rather than making it to the good end.

An anon kindly messaged me and told me that they were able to get a normal ending by picking all the answers that would lead to the good end, but they failed to get any guest to attend the party. They did this in Yoosung’s route and were able to get a CG.

Here are the tips I can give you for the answer choices for characters from Day 5 to Day 11. I would like to thank @glassnorouyadeunazuku and @paranoialover for helping me with Jumin and 707′s routes :) Remember, these are just tips on how to get the good ending, to get any of the bad endings I would just suggest picking the answers opposite to what you would be picking for the good ending answers.

  • Jumin - You have to always make sure you pick the answers that show you’re supporting Jumin throughout everything he does. Even if he’s being unreasonable, don’t make him out to be a bad guy, show that you’re there for him. Don’t act like a snooty gold-digger like Glam Choi and Sarah. Of course, always agree with him about how cats are the best animals in the world, especially Elizabeth 3rd. When you get around to Day 7, his possessive side will start to come out. To ensure you don’t get a bad ending, you have to be firm about your wishes to leave his place in order to get ready for the party but do not be mean about it. Pick the choices that show you understand how much he cares about your safety. Let him know when he gets out of line by picking the more kinder options. You should agree to stay with him until the situation gets cleared and don’t complain to the other RFA members about how you’re locked up.
  • Zen - Make sure he knows you’re always supporting him and his career, but do not act like an possessive fan. You want him to see you as a friend he can rely on at first, not someone who is only obsessed with his good looks. Also Jaehee may seem a little aggressive towards you do to her concerns about you and Zen getting serious, but do not be mean to her and pick the answers that show you understand her point of view. You also want to choose answers that will convince Zen to be more down to earth and fix his relationship with his family. Although it was good to take his side against Jumin from Day 1 to Day 4, make sure that they start to get along lol. Finally on the Day 10 you will encounter a Visual Novel Mode scene where you have the choice to “Stay still” or “Bite his hand”. Choose “Bite his hand” to ensure you get Zen’s good ending.
  • 707 - During the first few days, just keep playing along with 707′s jokes and feel free to even flirt with him a little. Be sure to talk more seriously when he does. When his colder personality begins to show, tone down the jokes and flirting. You are his main source for emotional support now, so you have to make it clear you are on his side. Let him know that you will seriously accept everything about him and that you don’t just like it when he acts like 707 in the chat room, you need to let him now that you like him how he is in real life also. When all the other RFA members start to talk about him, take the opportunity to tell them he’s going through a rough time and you want to be there for him. Be patient and give him time to sort out his emotions and feelings towards you. Be persistent when he tries to push you away, but don’t be too forceful or mean with your words. Also, take his side when he starts to doubt V and Rika.
  • Yoosung - Like Day 1 to Day 4, just be supportive of him through and through. Always make sure you show that you’re concerned about him, but don’t just automatically take his side especially whenever he mentions V. Be his voice of reason and try to make him see the error of his ways when he gets fired up. Make it very clear to him that you are and Rika are not the same person and you want him to see you as yourself. Do not pick the possessive answers or tell him you don’t mind if he wants to see you as Rika (that’s your one-way ticket to a bad ending). Last but not least, once you two start “pre-dating” just honestly pick the most sickeningly sweet, cheesiest responses ever and make sure he knows that you want to depend on him. Yes, you and him will be that kind of couple lol.
  • Jaehee - YOU BETTER BE 100% SUPPORTIVE TOWARDS THIS ABSOLUTE ANGEL Always take her side against Jumin. Tell Jumin off when he’s giving her too much work and won’t take her feelings into consideration. You can fangirl with her over Zen, but do not flirt with him if you’re given the option to. Encourage her to try new things and do what she’s passionate about. Just make sure you’re a good friend to her because this sweetheart needs someone who understands her and will always be there for her.

how i spent only $34 to purchase $1,000+ worth of school supplies for college

One thing I’ve found that many college freshmen do is they purchase everything at the school bookstore, shelling out more than $800 for what they think is the cheapest deal possible. Let me tell you now, that you’re doin’ it wrong if you think paying hundreds of dollars is the best you can do.

To put it into perspective, for this past year, if I purchased all of my required textbooks from my school book store I would have had to pay $1,466 (tax not included)–and this is the total calculated if I bought used textbooks only. If I wanted brand new textbooks, it would have been over $2,000 (tax not included). In the end, I only spent $34 to purchase an entire year’s worth of supplies (that’s a 97% discount!!!), and I will tell you how. Of course, how low you can go will depend on the type of textbooks your professors require you to have and if you need any online access codes.

1. Email your professors

A lot of professors receive compensation from publishing companies to include their books in the curriculum, so many professors will say a book is required when in reality, you probably read 4 paragraphs from that text in the course of a semester. Always e-mail your professors beforehand about the list of required texts and other required items so see how many times you really need that book or item.

For example, at the beginning of fall semester last year, one of the required items listed for lab was lab cartridges which cost $88. Before making the decision on whether to purchase that or not, I e-mailed the lab coordinator and asked about what the cartridges were, which labs they corresponded to, and how often we would need to use them. The response? We didn’t need them at all for lab. If I didn’t ask my professor about it beforehand, I could have potentially paid $88 for something I didn’t need.

2. Join your school’s Facebook network.

Most, if not all, colleges will have a network on Facebook. Whenever you get your admission e-mail, or in your school’s portal, there should be a link to join the main Facebook group. Through there, once you’re accepted, you should be able to access many other Facebook groups within the school network. Many colleges will have a group dedicated to students who are selling their old stuff, and many will sell their textbooks on there as well.

Freshman year, I paid $150 for my general chemistry textbook, the solutions manual to the chemistry textbook, general biology textbook, lab manual, lab goggles, and clicker by purchasing them from a student who took those courses already and had no use for them anymore. To put into perspective how much I saved, the general biology textbook itself retailed for $150 in the campus bookstore; and the total amount I would have had to pay if I purchased all those books from the bookstore would have been more than $560. I basically purchased this at a 75% discount!

I would consider that purchasing from students at your university is generally a safe transaction, as most people meet up on campus to exchange the cash for the product, but remember to always exercise caution. You can always ask the seller to send you more detailed pictures if you want to know more about the condition of the item, and most of the time, you can also try to haggle the price of the item down.

3. Try to find online PDFs

One of the biggest reasons why I was able to save so much money this year with my textbooks was because of online PDFs (bless those uploaders). I was able to download my organic chemistry textbook and solutions manual, and molecular cell biology textbook online for free. If I had to purchase them from the campus bookstore, I would have had to pay $917. That’s a lot of money I saved!

Generally speaking, textbook versions don’t really vary much. For the organic chemistry PDF I mentioned, I actually found the previous edition of the one we were required to have for the course. I e-mailed my professor and asked if there was any particular difference between the 3rd and 4th edition, and he responded saying that other than the fact that some content in one chapter was moved to the next, there was no difference, and there really wasn’t. Even the chapter problems were the exact same.

If you’re the style that likes to have a paper copy in their hands, you can always print out the PDFs.

4. Share with friends

As a biology major, we have many labs, and for those labs, we’re required to purchase a lab manual. This past year, I took orgo lab, and the lab manual for that was $143. I couldn’t find this online as a PDF because A) it was the newest edition for this year, and B) it was written by our lab coordinator so it couldn’t be found anywhere else. So I chose option C instead: share with a friend. One of my friends compared the previous year’s edition with the edition we were required to have to see if there were any big differences (such as different experiments), and there weren’t really, so she purchased last year’s lab manual from an upperclassman for $25 (I paid $12 since we were sharing). Since we had lab on different days, we were able to share the manual.

I also made scans of the manual as well so I wouldn’t hog it when she needed it to complete her conclusions, and she could use the scans for her pre-lab while I was using it to write my conclusions.

5. Don’t buy, rent instead

If you absolutely have to have a book and you can’t find it online as a PDF, see if you can rent it instead. Although your campus bookstore will also have rental prices, 3rd party rental prices are almost always cheaper. Two sites I highly recommend are Chegg and Bookbyte. Although I haven’t used Chegg personally, many of my friends do and they say Chegg’s prices are lower. I’ve personally used Bookbyte, and although their selection is a tad smaller than Chegg, they have great customer service. In addition, if you need your rental for a couple days past the rental date, you can send it back late (up to 12 days I believe) without being charged any additional fees or paying for an extension.

For example, if I were to rent the anthropology textbook from my bookstore would have costed $40, and renting from Amazon would have cost $35, however, Bookbyte had my anthropology textbook listed for $12 to rent. They actually sent me 2 copies of it (I was only charged for one), and both were in excellent condition. When the time comes for you to return your textbooks, just print out the pre-paid shipping label Bookbyte sends you and you can ship the book from your campus mailroom.

6. Ask upperclassmen

Second semester this year, I was able to get my hands on a hard copy of the newest edition of the orgo textbook and solutions manual for free, because one of my upperclassmen friends passed it down to me without asking me to pay, so she’s basically the nicest person ever. You can always ask upperclassmen friends first for textbooks and such if they’re the same major as you because chances are, they’ll still have their old textbooks and would most likely be much more willing to help out a friend than a student they don’t know.

The only thing you cannot get a discount on are online access codes. Any sites that are selling “used” online access codes are fake, and you should not purchase from them. Online access codes are associated with specific professors and courses, and e-mails as well. In addition, most have a set expiration date (usually a year or a semester), so any “used” online access code will most likely have expired by the time you try to use it.

What I usually do if I have to have an online code is accept their free trial. Companies such as McGraw Hill’s Connect have a 2 week free trial, and since my professors put up all the assignments in advance, I complete all the assignments within the free trial period. When the free trial expires, I can’t access the module again unless I pay, but the records of me completing my assignment still exist and I still get my homework points. I was lucky enough that our professor assigned online HW as easy gimme points, so I didn’t have to wait until he taught the material to finish it. The only online homework I paid for was Sapling, which was $10 since the free trial was only 6 days and homework assignments were uploaded weekly.

Thursday’s tips. How long it takes to learn animation industry software

Most artists will face the choice of software more than once in their lives, and that is the reason we made a guide of the most used programs in the animation industry a while ago.

But maybe need is pressing you to get something done “NOW” and you need to learn a new skill, like.. PRONTO!! which tool to use then?  can you estimate the time of completing such feat?

We  personally consulted an animation college teacher and he agreed that an average person can learn the basics of any given software in 4 hours of fiddling with it intensely.  Yet we believe that dealing with a beast that takes 10 months to master is not the same than one that takes only 3 days.

Here is a guide that we put together so you will know what you are getting into. next week: How to choose your first Cintiq

Guide on Reducing your Backpack's Load.

It has been a while since I made a guide. I hope that you will find it useful for your upcoming semester.

Guide on Reducing your Backpack’s Load:

  • Laptops. Unless you actual need them for class(your prof. strictly said, bring laptops to class) leave them at home. Even if you own a Macbook Air or some light netbooks/laptops, they do add weight to your school bag.

Alternative: Carrying a tablet, or just using the computers provided at school for work.

  • Textbooks. Similar issue as with the laptops. When the professor is lecturing, you do not need to bring them to class unless you need it for class work. Store them in your locker or leave them at home. For some classes, you are required to purchase the textbook for the mandatory readings… However for some classes, they will just be supplementary reads. *Check with your prof or see if it is indicated on the syllabus*

Alternative: Check the school’s library and see if they have a copy of it if you are in need of it. You can get an epub/pdf version of it as well.

  • Dictionaries. Unless you have an examination or no internet at school, you do not necessarily need it. Some professors will request that you buy a dictionary to use in class when writing compositions since they do not allow electronics… Most of the time, you are fine without it.
  • Stationeries. To be honest, you do not need to carry as many pens/pencils and whatnot as you are carrying.
    • Three pens? (Blue, Black, Red)
    • A Highlighter
    • An Eraser & Corrector Tape/White-Out..
    • Two Mechanical Pencils (in case one breaks/runs out of lead…)
    • A Calculator? (Maybe if you need it..)
    • ** This is sufficient for me at least… If you like using highlighters more, you can switch the quantity you carry with the pens… I use my pens more than highlighters.
  • Binders. Good for organisation… Just not for your backpack. They are just heavy. If you need to carry some assignments from the binder, take them out and use a pocket-folder to protect them.

Alternative: Pocket-folders to carry required papers. You can organise those papers afterwards.

  • Notebooks. Depending on the number of classes you have in a day, you might be carrying quite a handful of them. The 5-subject notebooks are heavy. You might not have all those classes each day so carrying it might be a pain. In this case, having an individual notebook for each subject would be better so you can leave the ones you do not need at home.

Best of Luck.

** I am planning on writing some more tips/guides in the near future. Let me know if you have any topic suggestions.

A Guide on Collecting all the CGs in Mystic Messenger

If you’re hoping to collect all the CGs in Mystic Messenger, you’ve likely seen my CG Spreadsheet. Thanks to the extensive efforts of many fans, we have discovered and documented where and when to find all of the CGs in the game. (Also, since I’m sometimes asked about this, CGs = the pictures that get saved to your Album)

I now have a more finalized version of the CG spreadsheet, this one organized by character so that anyone looking for a specific CG can instantly find out how to get it. It looks like this:

Find the new CG Spreadsheet Here.

To quickly summarize how the spreadsheet works: If you’re looking for a certain CG that you don’t have in your album, find its ‘number’ in your album by counting from left to right, top to bottom. Then you can look that up on the spreadsheet.

The green cells flag ‘unusual’ CGs that require an extra step to get - whether it be participating in the chat or not, choosing certain options, or changing your game to Korean (a method that will allow you to collect those CGs that were previously ‘missing’). The rest of the CGs you will likely collect automatically by going through the game.

Of course, I’m going to assume that since you’re trying to collect all of the CGs, you’ve probably at least gone through all of the characters’ Good Ends and After Ends, as well as the Secret Ends. So for people like you, there is more information under the cut on how to finish up your Album.

Final Note: If there are any mistakes or you don’t get a CG by following the CG spreadsheet, let me know! I will see it the quickest if you message me or send me an ask. Thank you to everyone who helped with the first CG spreadsheet!

Bad Endings

I finally completed the list ^^

Jumin’s Bad Endings

Zen’s Bad Endings

Seven’s Bad Endings

Yoosung’s Bad Endings

Jaehee’s Bad Endings

Also, there are more bad endings! It’s called “Bad Relationship ending”. I know this thanks to @tsukichiaki. You can unlock it when you miss few days or too many conversations in chatroom. I won’t be unlocking these endings. They are rather simple to get.
