Women in Menswear, 1900

Mashable has a cool story about two Norwegian photographers and their gender bending experiments in the late 19th century. Between the years of 1895 and 1903, Marie Høeg and Bolette Berg operated a small commercial photography studio in Horten, a town in Vestfold county, Norway. During their off hours, they’d dress up in men’s clothing, or put on fake mustaches while wearing dresses, as a way to explore the boundaries of gender. An except:

Høeg was an active and outspoken suffragist, and used the studio as a meeting place for fellow activists and women interested in the suffrage movement. (Women won the right to vote in Norway in 1913.)

More than three decades after Høeg’s death in 1949, a box of the partners’ glass plate negatives marked “private” was discovered on a farm where they once lived.

[…]

Høeg’s defiant suffragist spirit shines through the images, her costume choices allowing her to occupy traditionally male roles and personas as she campaigns for women’s right to an equal place in society.

You can see the rest here.

J. S. Johnston at Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls became a popular tourist destination over the course of the 19th century; the falls became the nation’s first state park in April 1885. These images were taken in the 1890s by the prolific landscape photographer John S. Johnston.

“Open My Third Eye” and “Ultimate protection” Spell Jars

Hey Ya’ll,

I saw that we don’t really have many divination spell jars, so I went ahead a made one to share with you all if, like me, you need a bit of an extra oomph to get into that divination mood. I also made an extremely powerful protection spell jar, if, also like me, negative entities like to try and hang around you and you need some intense protection to keep you safe during any type of psychic activity.

So first things first: Ingredients. My ingredients will be listed in categories: Easily accessible Herbs, Ingredient, & Oils, and Specialty Ingredients, which you will have to get from a metaphysical store.

“OPEN MY THIRD EYE”

So for this spell, you will need the following Items:

Easily Accessible

Bottle- I got this one for 50 cents at my local metaphysical store. You can use glass or amber glass, whichever you feel most comfortable with.

Purple Candle- To stimulate and enhance spiritual and psychic abilities. I got this one for 94 cents at walmart.

Sea Salt- For purification and protection. I used Pink salt, but you can use any sea salt you have on hand.  I got this for 3.99 at TJ Maxx

Anise- Raises your vibrations to the highest possible psychic level. I got this packet for 1.19 at walmart.

Ground Cinnamon- Increases your vibrations to aid in improving your psychic ability. I got the MCcormik for 2.89 at walmart. They have some cheaper versions too.

Bay Leaves- Powerful Protection to keep you safe during your psychic rituals. Also used to induce visions (when burned) and can cause inspiration and prophetic dreams. I got this Organic bottle at walmart for 3.89

Mint- For clarity of mind, enhances psychic abilities. I got this one at walmart for 4.89 ( A bit pricey, but the only brand they had in my town)

Poppy Seed- Used for dreams, visions, and clairvoyance. I got this one at walmart for  3.89

Rosemary- Used for dreams and Visions

Lemongrass Oil- Aids and enhances psychic powers. I got this one in a set at TJ.Maxx for 9.99

Sandalwood Oil- Heightens spiritual vibrations, cleanses, heals, and protects. Stimulates clairvoyance. I got this at walmart for 4.89

Specialty Ingredients

Cedarwood Oil- To keep your psychic channels open

Myrhh- Aids in meditation and contemplation

Honeysuckle- Normally used for money or prosperity but can also be used to promote clairvoyance.

————————————————————-

1. Light your candle as you gather all of your ingredients, this way you won’t have to wait so long afterwards.

2. Choose at least 5 herbs to use and at least 1 oil, plus the salt.

3. Put your ingredients into the bottle. I start off with my salt then move on to the other ingredients. I normally start with all the solid herbs first, then add the ground ones, and then finally the oils at the end.

4.  Focus on your intention with each layer you add. You can say the intended purpose for each ingredient out loud to help keep your intention up. Once you’re satisfied with your ingredients, its time to seal it up. For these glass candles, I usually dip the top in and tip the candle a bit, then roll the bottle lightly in the hot wax.

I did a small demonstration here, but you’ll need both hands. Tip the candle very slightly and roll it back and forth until its sealed to your liking.

And voila! Your Psychic spell jar is done.

At this point when the wax cools, you can carve a sigil into the wax if you like. I usually use a toothpick or the point of a mechanical pencil.

“ULTIMATE PROTECTION SPELL JAR”

Easily Accessible Ingredients

Black candle- To dissolve negative energies, bind them, and create a powerful protective barrier. I got this one at walmart for 94 cents.

Black salt- to absorb and contain negative energies. As pictured above, you can also use pink salt or sea salt for this, but I prefer black salt. I got this one at Tj maxx for 3.99

Rosemary- to bring in positive energies and for protection. I got this at walmart for 3.98

Carraway Seeds- Protective, especially in the health area. I got this one from a metaphysical store but walmart sells it for about 3.98.

St. Johnswort- Protective herb, works quickly to reverse negativity. Absorbs and grounds negative energies. Most health stores and supermarkets sell it in pill form, find a capsule so that you can break it open and use the herb.

Lavender- Cleanses, protects, and shields you from bad vibrations and negativity. I got this one at TJ maxx for 3.99

Thyme Leaves- Encourages positive vibrations and actions, protects. Walmart sells this for 3.98

Eucalyptis- Highly protective, also purifies. You can use either the plant or the oil, I didnt have the plant on hand so I used the oil here. I got this at walmart for about 2 dollars

Sage- Protective and cleanses the area of negative energies. you can buy this at walmart for around 2 dollars

Bay Leaves- Protection

Whole Cloves-A catalyst herb and can greatly enhance other ingredients its combined with, adds a great amount of power. I got this at walmart for 4.98

Sandalwood- Heightens Spritual vibrations as well as cleanses and protects. I got this at walmart for 4.89

Frankincense- Protection, a good “white” magic base to receive other herbs and oils

Specialty Ingredients-

Rue- Highly Protective. Guards against negative energies and gets things moving in a positive direction. Often used in consecrations.

Hawthorn- Used for protection, purification, and banishing.

Angelica Root- Highly protective, can also be used in exorcism.

Boneset/Ague Weed- Protection herb

Bergamot- Protection and prosperity, you can use either the plant or the oil.

Dragon’s blood- power and protection. Packs a serious punch. I highly recommend having some form of this on hand, its a great investment.

————————————————————————————–

1. Light your candle so that it can burn as you prepare your ingredients. Choose any size jar you like, I chose a larger jar since I had a bunch of ingredients.

2. Choose at least 6 herbs, I recommend one of them being cloves, especially if you don’t have dragon’s blood. and 2 oils.

3. Place your salt as your base, and add your leafy herbs in first. Add your whole ingredients last. hawthorn at the end, and then your cloves should be your very last ingredient. This is to create the catalyst and enhance the protective powers of the rest of your herbs.

4. Add your oils last, with dragon’s blood being your final sealing oil to give your spell an even bigger kick.

5. Seal your jar with the black candle wax ( I didn’t take a picture this time as I had to use both hands to seal it.) and recite/think this while you do so

With the power I place in this glass,

All negative things around me shall Pass

All shall be bound and none shall harm,

Their powers lessen with this charm.

As I will it, so mote it be.”

And there you have it!

A spell to enhance psychic abilities and to protect!

After you finish your bottles, you can either charge them up with your own energy and focus on you intent, make sure you relight your colored candle for this to help you channel.

or, you can create a crystal grid and use the crystals energies to charge the spell even further. When I do this, I usually test it with a pendelum to see if it’s finished.

I used clear quarts, obisidan, and apache tear for this grid.

I used clear quartz and amethyst for this grid.

hope this helps ya’ll!

Blessed be and best of luck in your witchy endeavors.
