Saints Row 2 and The Up-Coming Gamespy Shutdown

Gamespy has announced that they will be shutting down all multiplayer servers on May 31, 2014. This shutdown will affect hundreds of games that use their service for matchmaking, including Saints Row 2’s co-op and competitive multiplayer modes. While we are still looking at alternate solutions, here’s currently what the shutdown will mean for Saints Row 2 on all three platforms.

Saints Row 2 PS3 LAN Play will still work correctly after the shutdown for both co-op and multiplayer, but matchmaking and online play will no longer function.

Saints Row 2 PC LAN options for co-op and multiplayer will also still continue to work, but online will not. Many PC players have reported successfully connecting and playing online using virtual LAN software like Evolve or Tunngle which do not require a connection to Gamespy servers. We plan on testing and releasing a step-by-step connection guide before the actual shutdown date so PC players can continue to play online using this method.

The Xbox 360 version of Saints Row 2 uses Xbox Live for matchmaking and online play and is completely unaffected by the upcoming Gamespy server shutdown.

We’re sorry for the confusion or frustration the Gamespy shutdown may cause our fans, but want to also thank you for supporting Saints Row 2, and Volition, for so long.

THIS IS IT BABY…

As of May 31st, 2014 – Gamespy will close down all services for games still using it. Sadly for us Halo fans, this includes Halo: Combat Evolved on the PC. “Effective May 31, 2014, GameSpy will cease providing all hosted services for all games still using GameSpy. If you have any questions about how this impacts your favorite title please contact the game’s publisher for more information.”

Gamespy has been gradually phasing out support over the past few months. Back in January, Gamespy ceased to make its software available for licensing.

So what does this mean for those dedicated fans still playing Halo: Combat Evolved on the PC? Starting May 31st, you won’t be able to play the multiplayer anymore.

This still leaves the question. Will Halo: Combat Evolved manage to find itself on Steam with Steamworks support before or after the cut off date? It would make sense considering Halo CE, Halo 2 and Halo 3 all showed up on the Steam registry last year.

With news of Halo 2′s Vista future still unknown, it is possible that some sort of announcement will be made within the coming months for the original Halo trilogy to appear on Steam.

SAY GOODBYE TO 1UP, UGO, AND GAMESPY

Earlier today, digital media company Ziff Davis issued the following statement announcing that it’s refocusing its efforts on IGN and AskMen and shuttering 1UP, UGO, and Gamespy.

In addition to this refocus, a number of the IGN editorial staff have also been let go. Best of luck to everyone affected by this decision.

Here’s the statement:

From: Vivek Shah
Date: February 21, 2013
Subject: Staff Announcement

Today, we took some difficult but important actions that will ensure the continued growth and health of IGN and AskMen. Before I go into more details about the changes, you should know that they resulted in the elimination of jobs at IGN. It’s always upsetting to say goodbye to colleagues and let’s do what we can to help these employees as they seek new opportunities.

It’s also important for you to know that we are absolutely confident that we now have the best structure and team to successfully move the company forward and that there are no further planned reductions.

The changes we made today are designed to allow us to Simplify and Focus. Our goal is to do fewer things and to do them exceptionally well. In that vein, we want to direct all of our energy and work behind our two flagship brands: IGN and AskMen. They are both category killers and share a vision of a multi-screen (PCs, tablets, smartphones, TV) and multi-format (text, photos and video) world.

As a result of our decision to focus on our core brands, we are:

· Winding down 1UP.com, UGO.com and GameSpy.com;
· No longer ad repping 3rd party sites such as GameStop.com and FamilyGuy.com;
· Actively engaged with parties interested in acquiring IPL. IGN’s role going forward will be to broadcast and cover a variety of eSports events;
· Dividing our ad sales team into two: one focused on IGN and the other focused on AskMen.

On the IGN front, Peer Schneider will continue to oversee all of editorial and product, focusing those resources exclusively on IGN. The foundation of this entire company is its content and we will continue to have the best people in the industry producing it.

Charlie Barrett will oversee the monetization of IGN everywhere in the U.S. – PCs, tablets, smartphones, YouTube, consoles – and now be able to concentrate the sales and ad ops teams’ efforts where they can make the most impact.

Frank Puma will assume an exciting new role as executive director of programs and solutions, reporting to Charlie. The sales development, design and creative teams will report to Frank, whose charge is to deliver world-class advertising experiences.

A new head of engineering and technology for IGN will be recruited as quickly as possible. Tech has a monumental role to play in the growth of IGN and will be committed to working hand-in-glove with edit, product and sales.

On the AskMen front, Ric Poupada will continue to oversee all aspects of the AskMen organization and is excited to have a new VP of sales, Paul Chenier, reporting to him. Paul has been a longtime advocate of the AskMen brand and is one of the most talented sales executives in our organization. Having him build a dedicated AskMen ad sales team will do wonders for the business.

Ian Chambers will continue to run International out of the UK for both IGN and AskMen and we’re thrilled with the performance of our businesses overseas.

Mike Etheridge will be the VP of finance and operations for IGN and AskMen, working across all of the departments to ensure that we’re growing our business, expanding our margins and making metric-based decisions.

Rachelle Igoe will be the head of human resources for IGN and AskMen, ensuring that we continue to nurture, attract and retain the best talent in the industry.

I’m sure that there will be a number of questions in the days and weeks ahead but please know that we will be a better functioning and nimbler organization from this moment forward.

As I said on day one, openness and transparency are important, so please email me at [email] if you have any questions, thoughts or ideas.

Assassin’s Creed III PC Delayed To November 20, Surprising Nobody
  • GameSpy: So when’s the PC release date?
  • Ubisoft PR: October 30th.
  • GameSpy: Yeah, but when’s the real PC release date?
  • Ubisoft PR: It’s October 30th.
  • GameSpy: Uh huh. And can you say that with a straight face?
  • Ubisoft PR: You can ask me as many times as you like, but the answer will be the same.
  • GameSpy: Very well, let’s move on. So, when will you announce the delay of the PC version?
  • Ubisoft PR:
Satoru Iwata ~ 1959 - 2015

“Please understand.”

I did understand, Iwata. I understood that GameSpy got bought out by GluMobile and that renewing the contract for Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection would be costly for the company. I understand how the company needed to cover that up.

The service is never going to be back, but a very capable replacement has been prospering ever since its introduction the day after shutdown to keep your old games alive and well. One of your company’s employees had told me how you and your company would have left the Nintendo WFC service up and running indefinitely had your affiliate GameSpy not crash and burn. In addition, the company employee informed me how you guys are happy a replacement online service came to be made.

It’s that dedication to the consumer that makes me respect your company greatly. Even if the games are old and outdated, you make sure those who have the older games aren’t left out.

The replacement server Wiimmfi has come such a long way in a year. The flagship Nintendo WFC title, Mario Kart Wii, selling over 53 million units, nearly died completely last year in July. Now a year later, the competitive scene has rebuilt itself more strongly than ever before. With the 2015 Mario Kart World Cup allowing both Mario Kart 8 and Mario Kart Wii to hit the front page of Twitch (with over 2000 viewers for each broadcast), people are now seeing the potential of competitive Mario Kart. It’s amazing how a game that almost died out completely has bounced back in such a short time… thanks to the efforts of myself and our sometimes annoying as hell, but very resilient community.

You may have never been big on competitive gaming Iwata, which is a shame since it’s the future, but know this: Without you, huge resilient communities where gamers got to live some of their fondest memories would have never been created. Because of you and your company, we have the likes of the Smash Bros. Community, the Splatoon Community, and last but not least the Mario Kart Community. The Mario Kart Community being one of the most impressive, being able to resurrect an online service that was never meant to get shutdown in the first place.

In addition all the amazing titles that have come to shape our childhood and future childhoods would not have been introduced into our lives. My first Zelda game, Wind Waker, will always be an unforgettable experience.

And without the Mario Kart Community I wouldn’t have had the opportunity for such substantial growth.

You were one of the few people to shape my life, Iwata. May you Rest in Peace in eternal paradise.

salamander, the best looking cartridge on earth

Salamander for Famicom.

salamander, for the famicom, by konami – known in the US under the title life force – is the best looking video game cartridge on earth, i would argue. i’d certainly like to see any contenders that can seriously compete.

frank cifaldi tweeted out this pic with that assertion a few weeks ago, and i wrote up a bit of a tumblr blog, but then i got busy, and then chrome crashed and i lost it. so i’m starting again…

not just to agree with frank, because i do, but to talk about a few things.

one, of course, is just to let you know: hey, this is the best looking game cartridge. in case you didn’t know.

two: it started a conversation that made me think about my first trip to japan, which was for tokyo game show 2003, in september of that year.

salamander was probably the first retro game i bought.

this is a surprisingly complicated question to answer, sort of, i guess.

the first game i bought in japan, i am almost certain, is the PC genjin (bonk’s adventure) remake for the PS2. it’s sort of a remake, really, but not exactly. it’s a new game, really. the first store i went to that had games only sold new games.

i also asked my friend andrew to buy a lot of famicom games on yahoo auctions (what japan uses instead of eBay) because i’d just gotten my AV famicom that summer, after writing about the console’s anniversary for gamespy. and he did. so does that count? sort of. i guess?

but i’m reasonably sure that if salamander wasn’t the first retro game i tracked down, it was damn close. how about we say it’s first in my heart?

that’s because i’d always wanted it. in college, in 1997, before the era of cell phones, i’d missed my chance at my first famicom games ever.

i went to school at the university of the arts in philadelphia. several blocks away from the school (walkable, and i did, often) was a game shop called “the gamerary” (which people pronounced “gamery”) which sold playstation and saturn imports (and also rented anime on VHS, too.)

one of the guys who worked there brought in his personal famicom collection from when he was a kid and sold it off one day, and i missed it. this is why i mention “no cell phones.” my friend went and she managed to score the salmander cart, and i was so incredibly jealous. she brought it home and hung it on her bedpost from a chain through that hole on the top left (yes, it goes all the way through. i have no idea why.)

so i guess in the back of my mind i was kind of fixated on that, to be honest, though in a low key way. i’m not the kind of person who easily forgets things.

so yeah: probably the first game i bought. can you blame me?

i mean, life force is really good, too. if you’ve never played it you really ought to.

and i should, i realize, probably write an interesting essay about the gamerary, because that kind of culture is essentially completely dead. i was talking to a friend about an upcoming book project he’s doing about a retro game, and we started talking about 1990s game culture, and i realized what a brief and unique moment in time it was. i don’t mean to make more of it than it is, but it’s something i look back on with fondness, but also i think if it’s not explained it’s harder for people to understand why game culture took the shape it has.

the gamerary closed, suddenly, in 1997. my friend tried to go one day and there was a handwritten sign in the door. i didn’t want to believe it, but there it was.

Today has become one of the saddest days ever…. I just learned that on the 31st I have to say goodbye to online gameplay for my favorite game in the whole world, the game that has made me the dorky person I am today; No One Lives Forever  (I guess no game lives forever either TT___TT) Not only NOLF will be affected by this but hundreds of others as well

If you have NOLF though, you should play one more time before the server is gone forever  (GameSpy dies on the 31st T_T)…..I can’t believe this is actually making me tear up lol

Thank You GameSpy for keeping the servers up as long as you did! it could have ended as fast as NOLF2 LOL

Goodbye, GameSpy.

I was doing okay for most of today, even after finding out about the GameSpy closure from my workmate, Taylor. It’s only now, at 10:30pm on a Friday night when I’m thinking of getting ready for bed (because yes, I have no life lol), that I’ve realised just how sad I am I won’t get to wake up tomorrow morning and post some news.

Being the weekend news blogger was a bit brutal sometimes, especially if I had a shift following a particularly draining or eventful night. I really grew to love the oddball structure it gave to my week, though. I find it deeply depressing that tomorrow, I’ll get a weekend to do whatever I want with. Just like some kind of… normal person! But really. As a freelancer, I really appreciated that GameSpy was the backbone to my week. A pointy, razor-like backbone, because man did it sharpen up my writing skills.

I want to thank all of my fellow writers there. It was a little scary working for Dan Stapleton, whose work I used to read as a teenager in PC Gamer, but I learned a lot under his no-nonsense approach, and I’m really happy about how much I improved in the nearly-a-year I was with GameSpy. I really appreciated Mike Sharkey’s patience when training me up, and all the Free Agents he commissioned me for - man, were those fun pieces to write! I also really enjoyed working alongside Taylor Cocke and Mike Nelson, two very distinct writers with a hell of a lot of talent. Huge props must go out to Nathan Grayson for encouraging me to go for the news gig in the first place, and finally, I want to thank everyone who ever read my work there. I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did putting it all together.

What now? I’ve got some freelance articles lined up, and I’ll be working on Freeplay stuff all year. I’ve just moved into a gorgeous new apartment at the waterside, and you think I’d be concerned with keeping up the rent for the place. And I am, but that’s just something I’ll have to figure out before the next month’s is due. For now, what I’m really struggling with is the idea that I don’t have GameSpy news shifts to comfort me any more. I really loved combing the net for interesting tidbits, and writing news up in a way that’d appeal to my fellow gamers. Hopefully I land another gig like that soon. Till then, though - I don’t know. GameSpy meant a lot to a lot of people, and it’s kind of distressing that it just… doesn’t exist, now. This is probably why wine and late nights playing MMOs were invented.

Goodbye, GameSpy. I loved my time with you.
