“Republicans start from a sort of baseline of cruelty toward the less fortunate, of hostility toward anything that protects families against catastrophe.”
I won’t pretend to have a full answer, but I think there are two big drivers — actually, two big lies — behind Republican cruelty on health care and beyond.
First, the evils of the G.O.P. plan are the flip side of the virtues of Obamacare. Because Republicans spent almost the entire Obama administration railing against the imaginary horrors of the Affordable Care Act — death panels! — repealing Obamacare was bound to be their first priority.
Once the prospect of repeal became real, however, Republicans had to face the fact that Obamacare, far from being the failure they portrayed, has done what it was supposed to do: It used higher taxes on the rich to pay for a vast expansion of health coverage. Correspondingly, trying to reverse the A.C.A. means taking away health care from people who desperately need it in order to cut taxes on the rich.
So one way to understand this ugly health plan is that Republicans, through their political opportunism and dishonesty, boxed themselves into a position that makes them seem cruel and immoral — because they are.
As with Obamacare, this story began with a politically convenient lie — the pretense, going all the way back to Ronald Reagan, that social safety net programs just reward lazy people who don’t want to work. And we all know which people in particular were supposed to be on the take.
Now, this was never true, and in an era of rising inequality and declining traditional industries, some of the biggest beneficiaries of these safety net programs are members of the Trump-supporting white working class. But the modern G.O.P. basically consists of career apparatchiks who live in an intellectual bubble, and those Reagan-era stereotypes still dominate their picture of struggling Americans.
Comey. October and November 2016, I disliked his name and his actions. I knew little about him as a Man or his work with the FBI but his actions that led to the mess that we are currently in will never be forgotten. I refuse to pretend that it will.
Also, as a volunteer and political worker for local and National Campaigns, I’ve never witnessed the level of mess that included propaganda pushed by foreign governments AND our own media. As a political grad student, I’ve never studied US election Corruption on this level. But, unfortunately, I’m not surprised.
As a Black American Woman, When I think of the FBI and its history, the circumstances surrounding the 2016 election was just another strike against it. Of course, when I first saw Comey walking across the room to shake the hand of trump, I felt sick. The thought of them uniting to possibly … I just couldn’t handle it.
In late February- March 2017, I started to see a pattern that perhaps Comey wasn’t in trump’s pocket as other REPUBLICANS in DC seem to be. I carefully watched as I still didn’t trust him but I noticed he appeared to be going against the trump GOP. I continued to be cautious.
With every new leak, it appeared that trump and team either benefitted from Russia, was connected to Russia or helped Russia to interfere in our Election. It also seemed that Comey was perhaps honestly looking over the Russian investigation and actually doing his job. I was shocked. I thought this man was as corrupt as trump and many in the current GOP. Hmm. Maybe, just maybe, Comey was trying to correct a wrong that HE participated in, even if he received inaccurate Intel. But, I was STILL cautious. Then it happened. Comey was fired and not only was he fired when he wasn’t in his office, the trump team seemed determined to discredit his work, life and entire career. Shit. I felt Comey must have been close or changed the direction of his investigation…more connections to Russia.
Over the last month, hearing parts of Comey’s side through his friends- attorneys and media, I was anticipating his testimony. It didn’t disappoint me. The day before his appearance, he released his opening statement. That was a Smart move on his part. I guess having a long career in the FBI taught him successful strategies.
It caught many off guard and I’m sure that was his point. But it worked. When it was time for the testimony today, James Comey walked in, went straight to his spot and was immediately surrounded by cameras. As we all anticipated his speech, after the senators introduction and swearing in, James Comey let it be known that he was not repeating what he already released in his statement.
That is when I stood up and paid attention because this man did not come to play. He was passionate about his name being dragged, and was clearly pissed at the manner in which the trump team has tried their hardest to discredit the Intelligence community. That was his MAIN motive to demand this open hearing. I truly believe that. He wanted to clear his name, the FBI and the people that he has worked with over years. This was the one of the few human moments of the day.
The remaining 2 hours and approximately 45 minutes was mostly Comey saying trump lied, GOP trying to take up for trump, Democrats asking Comey direct questions that was pertinent to the classified and independent investigation and Comey saying trump lied, AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN.
( Look at my timeline on here for more information on the entire thing.)
Sessions, Flynn, Kushner, Pence and others are connected as well. Trust none of them. I definitely DON’T.
But, my overall feeling about this testimony, IT WAS NEEDED. The good, the bad and the ugly. All was worth listening to and I suggest EVERYONE download a link on YouTube or their favorite news site and watch it completely. As always, it is better to hear and see things for yourself.
I will watch it again and take more notes. But, today is a day that news pundunts will critique, lawyers try to defend and others try to spin. Most of all, it will be a case study for law and Political majors for many years to come. This was HIStory.
I’m so tired of people blaming Democratic losses on the party’s poor messaging. The real problem is that the GOP lies blatantly and willfully and everyone believes them. The GOP is repealing ACA because of supposedly soaring premiums. The increases would have been higher without Obamacare and many of the increases are offset by govt. subsidies.
But of course everyone believes the lying 🤥 obstructionist GOP who refused to work with Dems to create ACA.
