We’re on the eclipse of a heatwave in LA; you can just see the 💯 degree signs on the horizon like Mel Gibson in Braveheart. Last time it was 100 i decided to go to Howling Rays and eat some hot chicken which was as intense as bikraham yoga. I’ve never done bikrahm bc I don’t really like stretching, but eating hot chicken outside and stretching in a hot room, I meannnnnn tomato tomatao. Howlin rays has multiple levels of heat you can have applied to your chicken which can land you anywhere between this guy and this guy. All this heats got me thinking a lot about my fall wardrobe and tbh, I’m really not happy with it. Yes, I did secure the elusive lightweight turtleneck, but outside of that I got a closet full of clothes BUT NO CLOTHES TO WEAR U FEEL. May go in on this coat and help out the Dow jones/strength of the economy in China/guarantee I will never be cold in ‘deathzone cold’ weather. ALWAYS INVEST FOR THE FUTURE YOU, and CURRENT FINANCIALLY IRRESPONSIBLE YOU.
Tip: All the sides are amazing, sooooo good luck.
Tip: Really some of the best chicken I’ve had anywhere.
When to come here: Lunch, whenever you find them, when it’s not 100000 degrees outside, chill lunch.
A short, bulleted essay about the effect of media on our thoughts and why Brooklyn 99 is a Very Important Show
Howdy folks. As you all are probably aware of by now, I started watching Brooklyn Nine Nine and it sort of … all spiraled downhill from there. No, kidding, that was a joke to break the tension. But yeah, I started watching and couldn’t stop. And, in trying to figure out why, I noticed something.
It didn’t chafe me. It didn’t set off alarm bells in my head.
Too often, I’ll start a movie or book or show that will be entertaining, enjoyable even - but then, there’s always a line, or scene, or character, or moment that has me doing a double take. That has me cringing internally. Something that’s wrong, something that’s off, something that I don’t think is necessary. It bothers me, it irks me, and it discolours the entertainment experience I’m having. And yet, every time, I push that feeling away because I’ve resigned myself to the fact that these things will appear in the media I consume, and I might as well take what I can get, because it’s either that little irk or a blatant, in-my-face smear of disgusting and (for lack of a better word) problematic attitudes.
But it didn’t happen this time. And I was so refreshed.
While the show itself can be pretty goofy, and at times even childish, I much prefer it to any of the other “more adult” media content I’ve consumed. Why? Because it didn’t have those little irks.
Not only did it not have irks - it had the opposite of irks. It had - has - anti-irks. It actually soothes the irks from the other shows.
That was partially in jest. But no, seriously. A while ago, when I’d first started watching, someone sent me an ask that read “aren’t there so many things to love about Brooklyn 99?”
And so, because you all know my love for lists, I decided to make a list.
Let’s start with the biggest one: its incredibly
diverse cast. We’ve got a cast of seven characters consisting of two black men,
one of whom is gay; three women (not counting secondary characters) two of whom
are Latina; and two white guys, one of whom is Jewish (Hitchcock and Scully are
mostly background, so I’m omitting them from the “main” cast. If their names
don’t appear on the little intro, they’re not major characters). Of the seven main characters, four of them are POC.
Two of those four are female. But here’s the thing – in each and every case,
the audience is aware of the characters’ background without it being a topic
that is either a) made the butt/punchline of a joke, b) blatantly mentioned and
brought up like it’s something unnatural or strange, or, c) completely ignored.
In all of these cases, the race, sexual orientation, ethnicity and culture of
each individual character is treated as something normal, natural, and respected.
It can be and is part of their motivation as a character, but it isn’t the
be-all, end-all of their personality (in the case of Holt, for example, the
constant discrimination against him as a black gay police officer is a driving
force in his decisions and attitude while not completely encompassing and/or
diminishing his complexity as a character in his own right). It is never seen
as unimportant, and yet simultaneously it’s made known in a gracefully,
bordering-on-subtle way that – and here’s the important thing – normalizes it. This show makes the
harmony and love between a precinct full of people from all different
backgrounds normal and natural and a good thing.
Like yes he is extremely loved and respected throughout the fanbase, but he’s not appreciated like he should be. Whenever he does the slightest thing wrong people are all over him saying how vial he is and how much of a whore he is. Like if Calum were to trip and fall while meeting fans people would be like, “OHMYGOD IS HE FUCKING KIDDING ME?? HE HAD TO LEAVE EARLY TO GO GET AN X-RAY BC FUCK HIS HEALTH I DON’T EVEN WANT HIM TO TALK WITH ME JUST TO GET A PICTURE WITH HIM OMG WHAT A RUDE FUCK I HATE HIM….still love you though Luke!!!!!” Like he legit met fans with luke and they all crowded around luke but not Calum…like he was there to say hi to them…calums also in the fucking band believe it or not! But, when he does something amazing- like idk if you guys ever heard the fucking songs dayLIGHT OR ANYTHING BUT THE KID O W N E D THE SONG BUT I DON’T REMEMBER PEOPLE FREAKING OUT ABOUT IT BUT A N Y W A Y S- it gets ignored so easily, like people are just sitting there like “who calum”. AND ITS ANNOYINGG!!! bUT whenever 5sos realease a song with michael singing on it, all those same motherfuckers hop right on in to michaels lane and make themselves cozy. firstly, fuck out of my lane. secondly, you are actually a fucker if you do that. don’t even try and fight me on saying calum isn’t under appreciated. Don’t. because it happens everyday. groupie rumors, and the fact that he was flipped off for asking fans to live in the moment and put there phones away, and the fact that people don’t even care about talking to him they only want a picture (cough bitches at the state champs show in aus couGH)!!!!!! he’s been ignored for too long and i aint having it anymore. calum has been nothing but a kind ass person. he’s been there for the fans, for the music, for the boys, and never is he nasty to fans. i’m not kidding if you want to fight me on this my messages are open for discussion, bc i’m ready to fucking fight someone. the boy needs more respect. if by any slim chance in hell calum sees this, i hope he knows how loved and appreciated he is by me and by so many. i really love and want to meet and hug him and tell him this face to face. and to all you jackfucks out there who treat calum like dirt, please exit to the left!!!!!!!!! srry this is so long tHX TTYLLL BITCHES!!!!!!
one of my entries for the x-ray and vav title card contest! this was super fun to do and probably my cleanest lineart ever. i hope i can pump out title cards for the other three episodes before the contest closes lmao
I'm rewatching 3x17 and I just noticed the positioning of the scene when F first walks into the wedding!! O is standing in the aisle with the alter/front of church behind him, Diggle's in the position of best man, F stops to look at O from the start of the aisle, her face is glowing when she lets go of Ray and walks up the aisle to Oliver. His face is just like a man seeing his bride for the first time and his bashful look when she walks up to him is pure adorableness. This ship is killing me!
Would you believe that I was re-watching 3x17 myself last night, just to see these two adorable idiots make mega heart eyes at each other?

That nervous shuffle thing he has going on is so freaking cute I want to cry! The big bad vigilante hero, all nervous and flustered because the girl he loves so much just…walks into the room. It’s like she brought the sunlight with her, streaming in through those big glass windows. He can’t even look at her, she’s so bright and beautiful. And it doesn’t matter if she’s not here with him – she’s here, and that’s all that matters. She is all that matters.
As for her, well. She came with another man, a man she liked. Maybe her feelings ran a little deeper, who knows? But they were nothing compared to how she felt for this man, the man she’s known for three years, the man she’s seen grow into a hero (as an aside: my favourite “Olicity” moments from this ep aren’t actually at the wedding. They are the two separate scenes in which Oliver and Felicity tell someone, and remind us, that they know each other better than anyone; that they trust each other more than anyone; that, above all, they are partners. Always.).
Here, she has eyes for only one man:
“Sometimes the heart beats for a different man in the room.” – Emily Bett Rickards
We always talk about the way Oliver looks at Felicity – his “Felicity smile”, his “Felicity heart eyes”, but the way Felicity looks at Oliver is equally important. Yeah, she’s always liked the look of him, superficially speaking. But here it’s like her eyes gravitating towards him is just….fact, plain and simple. The way of the world. Because if Felicity Smoak is “it” for Oliver Queen, then Oliver Queen is also “it” for Felicity Smoak.
There are moments where they both silently long for each other, unable to express their quiet dreams:
But silent longing and quiet dreams aside, there is no selfishness, no pettiness or jealousies at display:
Yeah, there’s some mild snarking (“Ray saved the day!” // “For the record, I am not the one who used that phrase.”) but above and beyond everything is the need for the other to be happy. Have you ever seen a more glorious OTP? Because I haven’t…
Finally, Anon, I leave you with this. Do you know what my absolute favourite Olicity shot of all time is? Here it is:
This shot just….encapsulates everything that I love about Olicity. It’s the nervous shuffle again, the glowing looks, the secret smiles. It’s the acknowledgement that “Yes. I’m in love with this gorgeous girl and she’s the best thing to ever happen to me and I’m the luckiest guy in the world.” There’s something so tender about his expression here. And once again, Felicity’s standing with the one man she wants more than anyone, and she’s looking at him like he’s the sun, like he’s the answer to every question she’s never even asked.
You were talking about how these two looked like blushing bride and groom when the scene starts and she walks in. Well look at them here, Anon. I’m not one to proclaim “married!” at every moment with these two, but does this picture not look like the very definition of it? This is Oliver and Felicity when they aren’t together. Are you ready for Oliver and Felicity when they are together?
