Next week, two of my worlds collide when The Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast crosses over with MPR’s WITS radio show.

WITS is a delightful program hosted by the most splendid John Moe, and upon which I have guested many many many times. You can catch it on the honest-to-God radio, or you can catch up with it via podcast here.

“Beyond Belief” is a segment of the live, staged fake-radio show The Thrilling Adventure Hour. Each segment of TAH is podcast individually. The “Beyond Belief” segment— starring myself and Paget Brewster as Frank and Sadie Doyle— concerns a pair of boozy paranormal investigators who are married to each other and to booze. It’s The Thin Man with ghosts. And more booze.

Booze.

Frank & Sadie Doyle, along with “Weird Al” Yankovic and musical guest Rhett Miller, will be visiting WITS on Friday, October 24th.

If you want to catch up on the adventures of Frank & Sadie Doyle. here are all of their adventures for your listening pleasure. They’re each about 20 minutes or so, with the occasional super-sized special episode along the way. I personally recommend all of them.

Beyond Belief poster: Tom Fowler

In response to paulftompkins’ call to fans to take the photo he posted from the last performance of the Thrilling Adventure Hour and create an alcohol label or currency, Michael Karpinski (kaizokurisu) & myself (Ashely Karpinski) created this fine bottle of Paul F. Tompkins Irish Whiskey. Such bottles can be found in Frank & Sadie Doyle’s liquor cabinet or backstage at Largo before a Thrilling Adventure Hour performance ^_~ Thank you for everything good sir! Enjoy!

  • Sadie:And what do you suppose Mr. Jones said?
  • Frank:Well, I suppose he said yes.
  • Sadie:But how do you suppose he said it?
  • Frank:Suppose you give me a hint.
  • Sadie:Suppose you ask nicer.
  • Frank:Suppose I don't.
  • Sadie:Then I suppose you won't get what you're after.
  • Frank:Pretty please with sugar on top.
  • Sadie:Just on the top?
  • Frank:Too much sugar will ruin those pearly whites.
  • Sadie:What are you, a dentist?
  • Frank:What are you, a cop?
  • Sadie:Just someone with a sweet tooth.
  • Frank:You have a sweet everything.
  • Sadie:You have a good eye.
  • Frank:I have a good everything.
  • Sadie:I suppose you do.
  • Frank:Now suppose you answer the question.
  • Sadie:Suppose I already have!

If you’ll be in the Los Angeles area on Saturday, March 21st, come to Largo at The Coronet to see…

Probably my greatest joy in life comes from Acker & Blacker’s Beyond Belief. I showed my amorous adoration previously on this tumblah with the fanart I did last summer (which, waggles eyebrows, might actually become a print featured at their shows) but my latest labor of nerd love has been to legofy my favoritest of sousy supernatural sleuths. I’m probably a little TOO proud of this considering I’m a 32 year old adult male, but as Will Ferrell said, that age 14 label on the Lego box is just a suggestion. Now, who the devil at Lego do I need to petition to get a penthouse playset build for these two and their friends and foes?

Our Love Is The Best (Live edit)

Extra verse:

Sadie:

Frank!

Frank:

Sadie!

Both:

Love of my life!

Our love is the best!

(YES!)

Better than all the rest –

Sadie:

By a large margin!

(So much better than the rest!)

Frank:

We know!

(Our love is better than all the rest of the loves it’s true!)

Both:

Our love is the best!

FRANK & SADIE DOYLE

I love the Thrilling Adventure Hour podcast. If you have not listened to it, it is basically a comedic spin on old-time radio shows. Frank and Sadie are upper-crust socialites whose adoration for each other is only matched for their love of alcohol. Unfortunately their boozing is often interrupted by various people turning up at their door with supernatural mysteries to solve. The duo is performed by the wonderful Paul F. Tompkins and Paget Brewster.

George Darling: A Pan has taken my wife!
Frank Doyle: And by pan I assume you mean a monstrous creature and not a cooking implement.
George: Would I come to you for help with the latter?
Frank: Well George, we’ve only just met so I wouldn’t presume to speak for you.

  • Sadie:That was Dave Henderson.
  • Frank:Do we know a Dave Henderson?
  • Sadie:He's married to my best friend, Donna Henderson and father to the Baby Henderson.
  • Frank:Eh...rings a bell...
  • Sadie:He is a police detective officer man.
  • Frank:Nearly remember him...
  • Sadie:He's occasionally a werewolf.
  • Frank:How occasionally?
  • Sadie:Once or twice a month.
  • Frank:So close now...
  • Sadie:Allergic to bees.
  • Frank:DAVE HENDERSON!

Here’s To Us

Frank:

My glass was half empty until I met you.

A life on the rocks I suppose,

then fate mixed in equal parts you, me, and gin,

and now my cup overflows.

Sadie:

While most might toast to one’s wealth or good health,

there are poor souls who drink to forget.

We drink to remember to drink once again,

raise a glass for the best reason yet:

Both:

Here’s to us!

Frank:

Here’s to you and me,

Sadie:

add the bottle and that makes three.

Both:

Who needs high sobriety? Here’s to us!

Sadie:

Let’s knock ‘em back til we’re out of knocks.

Frank:

Try 'em all like Goldilocks.

Both:

Fill 'er up and hold the rocks,

Here’s to us.

Sadie:

Here’s looking at us, kid!

A little lubricated.

Frank:

In booze we trust, kid!

Both:

Walking a straight line’s so overrated!

Sadie:

It seems so long we’ve been without,

Frank:

pour me a drop to end this drought.

Both:

Bottom’s up 'til we bottom out,

Here’s to us

Sadie:

To the drop of a hat, love,

and partly cloudy skies

Frank:

I’ll drink to that, love,

Both:

Like the man said, here’s mud in our eyes!

Sadie:

And if my spirits start to sink,

Frank:

I know your favorite sound is

[CLINK]

Sadie:

It’s the last thing I hear before I drink!

Both:

Here’s to us.

Yes we’re quite a match, so it’s down the hatch,

Here’s to us!

Some more Roarin’ Twenties Frank and Sadie.

While the thrilling adventure hour segments all have nebulous placements in time. I have very distinct ideas of what eras each one takes influences and styling from. This is not the first time I have placed the amazing Doyles in that time period.
