FiveFingers

Yes, I have now become THAT girl...

So I recently bought some of Fila’s new Skeletoe “Barefoot” shoes. The first time I saw these shoes I was in a nature center and our tour guide was wearing Vibram’s FiveFinger barefoot shoes– Yes, I realize that it isn’t the best “everyday” or “average” example to convince you that these shoes are normal or common…but bare with me. Ever since then, Facebook adds keep popping up reminding me how Hippyish I am for wanting a pair.

Recently, Fila became the first big-time shoe brand to get a toe in the door of this shoe trend (did you catch that clever foot diction?).The most popular brand of Barefoot shoes comes from a very well-known and dependable hiking brand known as Vibram. Vibram is most known for developing the rubber sole for hiking and mountaineering boots in the 30’s. Since then, they’ve applied that same guarantee of quality and versatility into their Vibram FiveFinger’s product.

I know you may think it’s weird…minimalist footwear? Why? Why don’t you use normal running shoes like the rest of us? The idea of minimalist running goes back to the beginning of human existence…when people weren’t wearing shoes. Duh. Running and walking barefoot outside has been the norm even up to when my father was a kid. Recently, however, people have become obsessed with the running shoe. High arches. Arch support. Flat footed. New Balance 407s. Nike. Asics… I ran cross country so I know my way around the flashiest and most comfortable running shoes. I have some credibility. Not much. Just some.

…So back to the question of why. What is the difference, the BENEFIT, of barefoot running or minimalist footwear?…Well let me direct you to my plagarised paragraph from Vibram’s FiveFinger Heath and Wellness page…

“Our revolutionary design makes feet healthier by allowing them to move more naturally and freely. The typical human foot is an anatomical marvel of evolution with 26 bones, 33 joints, 20 muscles and hundreds of sensory receptors, tendons and ligaments. Like the rest of the body, to keep our feet healthy, they need to be stimulated and exercised.

5 Reasons to Wear Vibram FiveFingers:

1. Strengthens Muscles in the Feet and Lower Legs—Wearing Vibram FiveFingers will stimulate and strengthen muscles in the feet and lower legs, improving general foot health and reducing the risk of injury.

2. Improves Range of Motion in Ankles, Feet and Toes—No longer ‘cast’ in a shoe, the foot and toes move more naturally.

3. Stimulates Neural Function Important to Balance and Agility—When wearing Vibram FiveFingers, thousands of neurological receptors in the feet send valuable information to the brain, improving balance and agility.

4. Eliminate Heel Lift to Align the Spine and Improve Posture—By lowering the heel, your bodyweight becomes evenly distributed across the footbed, promoting proper posture and spinal alignment.

5. Allow the Foot and Body to Move Naturally—Which just FEELS GOOD.”

So back to me, shall we? Let me tell you about my Skeletoes. Warning: The Skeletoes, in comparison to the Vibram FiveFingers, are not recommended for running purposes. They are more of the gateway drug to minimalist footwear…a crutch, if you will, to ease you into the shoes specifically designed for your everyday activities and workouts– like the Vibram FiveFingers.

I wanted to buy these shoes for my Detroit Half Marathon coming up in October. I did not do my research beforehand and bought the Skeletoes only to discover that the manufacturer does NOT recommend them for running (remember: gateway drug). So I did my research via YouTube AFTER my purchase, and have now been working on assimilating my feet into the “Barefoot” way of life (well running…same thing). I’m totally normal I SWEAR. Stick with me here.

I’ve been wearing my Skeletoes nearly nonstop since I bought them at Dick’s Sporting Goods (For thirty-five dollars, might I add). For the most part, I love them. And yes, they do attract a sort of attention out on the streets amongest the common folk. I’ve been tapped on the shoulder at Starbucks, at the Tiger’s game, or at work. For the most part, I’ve discovered a very positive response and interesting discussions with people I normally wouldn’t have talked to. I never noticed how much people look at your feet until you change your shoes…

So now I’m looking into buying a pair of Vibram Sprint or Bikila FiveFingers for running and use my Skeletoes for walking, hiking, and driving :)

Happy running, everyone.

Okay, I know these are kind of horrendous looking, but my new Vibram FiveFingers are SO amazing for running/jump roping/working out!!

I’M OBSESSED. All you fitblrs need to go run out and try them on. For real. And I mean, they’re somewhat cute, right? A little? Maybe the looks will grow on me, because I already want another pair hahah.
