Everytime I watch this scene and Finnick looks away for like half a second all I kept thinking about how is Finnick gets prostituted out by Snow and this look is the real Finnick slipping past his exterior and it hurts me.
You know what makes this little moment so heartbreaking? This is the real Finnick. This is Finnick immediately after the jabberjay incident where he hears the screams and cries of his beloved Annie. And what does he do to calm himself after that traumatizing ordeal? He sits in the water. He just wants to be surrounded by something close. Something familiar. Something that reminds him of Annie.
You know makes Finnick’s reaction after the jabberjay scene so heartbreaking? Not only has he just heard the cries and screams of his true love, but he’s finally realizing that Snow knows where to hit him. He knows that all he has to do is simply present the possibility of a threat to Annie’s safety and that would be enough to send Finnick spiraling. Even though he knows that the screams were manufactured, he still thinks the Capitol has Annie and that the jabberjays were simply mimicking Annie’s real screams. The saddest part about this is that he turned out to be right. As soon as he and Katniss are rescued, he finds out that the Capitol actually did kidnap Annie. All of Finnick’s fears have come true. The screams were real.
You see that right there? You see Finnick’s impression as he tries to handle the fact that his one true love has just been kidnapped by the Capitol and they have no clue if she’s alive or what they’ll do to her. As Katniss asks where Peeta is, Finnick turns aways. He doesn’t want to be the one to tell her that Peeta has been taken to the Capitol just like Annie. He doesn’t want to say it out loud. It would make it too real to handle. Handle that when he get’s out of the arena, Annie won’t be there waiting.
