The following Monday found Finn parking his scooter outside the college. He’d overslept and missed meeting the gang for their usual brew on the walk to class. After tucking his helmet away, he patted his fringe back into place and checked his watch to see if there was enough time for a smoke. “Oi, dickhead!” Chop bellowed. Finn looked up, leaving his tobacco in his pocket and spotted his mate across the road. “I just dropped off Izzy. You mate, are going to be late for school.” Chop was almost singing that last bit, trying to tease Finn. It was easy for Chop to take the piss, he’d been out of school for a year. “Ah, fuck off, Chop.” Checking his watch again, Finn tucked his keys into the pocket of his shoulder bag and turned toward the school doors. “Eh! I’ll see you at the pub tonight! No exceptions, my lad!” Chop shouted at Finn’s quickly retreating form. Finn waved behind him as he cleared the doors and took off running to his first class. Slightly winded, Finn was making the last turn to get to his Literature class before he would be officially late. Just as he rounded the corner, Finn crashed into someone. Long, dark hair covered his face for a moment. He put his hands out to catch the person he’d knocked. “Em, soz. I didn’t see ya.” Finn looked up into a familiar face. Mae was before him, in her leather jacket, orange foam headphones over her ears and a thunderstruck expression on her face. Finn held onto her and felt a smile overtake his features. She was wearing a black Oasis t-shirt with a purple skirt over black leggings and purple converse. He liked it. Rae’s face altered to one of curiosity. She tried to raise her hands to move her headphones and was stopped by Finn’s tight grip on her upper arms. Feeling her attempted movement, Finn quickly pulled back his hands, letting her go. “Ya wha?” Mae pulled back her headphones and blinked at Finn. Rubbing the back of his neck Finn said, “Em, I were just apologizing for running into ya.” He tried to smile again but was distracted by the sounds coming from Mae’s headphones. Pointing at them he asked excitedly, “Is that the new Weezer tune?” She nodded and bit her lip. “Em, yeah. I added it to a mix.” She looked puzzled. “You like Weezer, Finn?” Finn’s mouth dropped open. “Of course I do! I really liked the new album. I got it on vinyl!” Mae just nodded again. Finn nodded back. Not sure what else to say Finn took a retreating step. “Well, I better get to class. Now I will definitely be late to Literature. Em, see you around, Mae.” Finn made to continue on his way. She rolled her eyes and mumbled, “Mae. Whatever.” As she straightened her headphones and started walking Finn called out after her, “Sorry again for almost knocking you down.” He stood there a moment, holding the strap of his bag, watching her go. A half smile curled his lip as he turned toward class. Perhaps Archie was right, Mae did seem to have decent taste in music.

“Me and you, we’re gonna be alright. And you know why, don’t you? Because me and you, we don’t always have to be an ‘us’. And just because we’re not together now, Finn Nelson, doesn’t mean that we’ll never be, ‘kay?”
Do you know who I’m most worried about? It’s not my parents, and it’s not the lads at college. It’s Finn. We’ve been mates since primary. We’ve had sleepovers, we’ve topped and tailed in the same bed. When he finds out, I don’t want him thinking back to them times and getting the wrong idea. He’s my mate, you know?
