anonymous asked:
why crazy rich asians is problematic ?
I don’t want to overstep since I’m not East or Southeast Asian but here are a few links that sort of summarize the issues people have with it.
Like, I definitely am not here for white people and non-Asian people complaining about it and I refuse to validate complaints about Black Panther seriously because there’s a lot of anti blackness in ALL Asian communities including South Asian ones but I think we’ve got to listen to and acknowledge the criticisms made from East and Southeast Asian people.
I do think that every form of media is problematic if you look deep into it but I also think that everybody’s line for not consuming a certain piece of media is different and totally valid. For instance, I never watched House of Cards because I’ve known the stuff about Kevin Spacey (and Bryan Singer) for years since I’m a huge gossip monger but like, I still love Gone With the Wind which is obviously extremely racist. The point is, make informed choices but don’t dismiss anybody else’s criticisms unless of course, they come from a place of racism or misogyny or ableism which is not worth listening to.
