11.21.17 I caught a performance of Thomas Adès’s new opera, Exterminating Angel, at the Met, It’s based on the film by Bunuel. a surreal fantasy
about a dinner party from which the guests can’t escape. I loved the music, conducted by Adès himself, incorporating Ondes Martenot into the score. The operatic voices were overwrought and standard-issue opera to my ears, although there were some impressively high notes. The voices worked best when interplaying with two or more or in unison. I wrote a piece of music called Te Deum back in 1982 based on the same film which appears on the Foetus album LIMB.
